A couple more thoughts about the Squirrely Tail half marathon...

Related Posts Plugin for WordPress, Blogger... Hey all! If you missed my race recap of the Squirrely Tail Twail Wun half marathon, check it out here. Also, I urge you to check out Ana's recap. She got a lot more pictures than I did, including the infamous stream crossing with yellow rope but no lifeguard.

Here are some final things I want to share about the race...

1. The results are in! I was the 5th woman overall and I was first in my age group! (30-39). I am quite pleased.

2. Apparently, you can get poison ivy in the winter. I have several dots of poison ivy on my left leg! I think it was from climbing over several logs. From what I read online, the plants die but the oil can stick around.

3. My recovery went well. I felt real jacked up for several hours after the race but the next day I felt normal. Two days after the race, I went for a run. My legs were tired, but other than that, no aches or pains. That's a success!

4. I'm not sick of trail running yet because I signed up for the Naked Bavarian 20 miler at Blue Marsh Lake and I will be running that on Saturday! Hopefully the trail conditions are better than those at Pinchot, or else I will regret this decision!

Oh, 5:41am update: My shoulder is feeling A LOT better! I can raise it over my head and stuff, only hurts to do things like reach around my back. Every day it's starting to feel better. I still want to buy a special pillow.

  1. P.S. Congrats on the AG award. Did you get a prize or anything?

  2. Congrats!!!!! It never ceases to amaze me that you don't train specifically for these races but then go on to win AG awards and place really high up. You are my favorite runner!

I'm glad your shoulder is feeling better! What kind of pillow will you get to help? One of those big ones where they prevent you from rolling over?

    1. I won't lie, I like that I'm your favorite runner. :) My mom and you have me as their favorite runners. I'll take it. :)

I'm not sure what kind of pillow I will get, I didn't do a lot of research yet because researching pillows doesn't sound fun at all.

  3. I have a pillow for side sleepers, but I still get knots in my shoulder. I know some of it is from tension, so I'm trying to relax as much as possible before going to bed. Next up, I might try a full body pillow to support everything.

    1. Man, sounds like I'm not the only one with shoulder/sleep problems!

  4. I had a heck of a time this year with sleeping. We realized our mattress was 18 years old and I was waking up sore every morning in January. In the month before, it was not an issue. Just all of a sudden! Alan had a few sore mornings too! Finally we bought a new mattress and haven't had a problem since. However, I also had a sore arm and was trying everything not to sleep the wrong way with it (above me head, trapped underneath me). Then finally I told the PT lady about my arm pain and got a super simple exercise. I felt better within a week of doing the exercises! Yippie! Maybe the arm pain is a DOMS pain from your race?

    1. What is the exercise? That is good the mattress helped fix things too. Our's is nearly 10 years old. Maybe we need to flip it? Are you still supposed to flip mattresses?

The shoulder hurt Saturday morning and the race was Sunday, so I know it was from sleeping. I have been warning the students that I can't do all of our dance moves due to injuring my shoulder sleeping. They're like, "Sleeping!?" And I say, "Yeah, haven't your parents ever said in the morning, ugh I slept wrong and now my back hurts" and then they're like oooooh yeah. :)

    2. Super easy exercise, which I thought was as a joke when she told me. It's a resistance thing. Sit in a chair at a table. Push up on the table edge like you were trying to flip the table over (hand underneath the table). Put as much resistance on it as you can without pain. Hold that for 30 seconds, 5 reps... do 3 times a day. Bicep isometrics. It worked for me!
Our old mattress was supposed to be flipped and rotated, but the new one you don't flip. Crazy!
