2 Bad Habits...

I have some confessions today... I have developed two really bad habits in the past couple weeks... It's time to come clean. Feel free to chastise me so I get my shit together.

1. Drinking coffee instead of water during my at home workouts.

This is so bad. Hydration is important (obviously) and I need to be drinking water during my workouts instead of coffee! When I lift at Planet Fitness, it is not a problem. I carry around my water bottle and drink it like a boss. But if I am at home all cozy, working out in my PJs... I have gotten into the bad habit of drinking my iced coffee instead of good 'ol H20. Tell me I'm bad and I need to stop!

2. Not eating properly before my weekend runs.

This one I am very ashamed of because it is something I used to do when I was really "control-y" with my food. I would purposefully not eat before my workout just to delay my eating for the day. That is not the reason behind it these days, but it is still not a good thing to do. What happens is I am either full from the night before or I am just a little hungry and feel like it is useless to eat. But being even a little hungry before my workout means that 20 minutes into the workout I am starving. This should not be happening. I need to properly fuel beforehand, even if that means eating less the night before so that I am hungry when I wake up.

Do you have any bad habits you would like to share?

  1. I can't fault you for the coffee. I always do TRX after my run and I do it while I am drinking a cup of decaf coffee. I justify it because I put about a cup of milk in my coffee (yes, I have a ginormous mug) and I feel like that is my "refueling" right away (milk = carbs + protein). Maybe for your pre-run breakfast it can be something small but something that really gives you what you need (peanut butter on toast w/ a banana or a small bowl of oatmeal w/ nuts or peanut butter on top). Then on your run you could have fuel w/ you in case you get hungry. Even just a couple of dates if you don't like the gels. But here is how I see it: you are so healthy and balanced and a few bad habits are OK. The coffee one for sure I would not stress about. The fuel one I would work on simply because it will make your run more enjoyable!!

    1. I totally agree, I should work on the fueling because not only would the run be more enjoyable but I would perform and recover better. You are so positive! I need you to be my life coach. :)

    2. I will totally be your life coach/nutritionist and you can be my trainer!
But first you guys have to move to Colorado.

Random side note: I just watched the CNN special Weed 1 and Weed 2 and was thinking of Paul. I didn't even realize the strain they are giving to those w/ seizures was so low in TCH but high in cannabadiol. I learned a lot and then you were in my dream :) LOL

    3. Yup! And if it were LEGAL everywhere, they'd be able to do even more research on how to make the best strain for seizures. :)

    4. I completely agree. Can't believe this is even an issue. The documentary was both heartbreaking and also inspiring. Made me so proud of my state!!

  2. I'm currently having issues with coffee as well! I used to drink water all day long, but lately I've been so tired (from not sleeping due to the hip + working long hours) that I've been drinking coffee 24/7 instead of water. I know that water is actually supposed to help you feel more refreshed than coffee, but something about the flavor of coffee makes me feel more energized (lol). Let's kick the habit... starting next week :)

    1. lol I refuse to kick the coffee habit in the morning BUT I can commit to NOT drinking it during my workout. I actually don't crave coffee at all in the afternoon, it gives me a tummy ache then. UNLESS I am out shopping. I love shopping and sipping on coffee :)

  3. I don't drink iced coffee, so maybe that's why the combo of coffee and exercise seems so bizarre to me. I love my coffee in the AM, but a hot coffee sounds pretty unappetizing mid-sweat session!

I used to be terrible about drinking water too. But now that I've kicked the soda and switched to sparkling water I have been so much better about staying hydrated!

My bad habits are that I'm really bad about eating post-exercise. I also don't stretch or foam roll as thoroughly as I probably should, because I get whiny about the time it takes up.

  4. Oh man there is so much junk food I eat because I "just wanted it". Even last night- I wasn't hungry at all, but I ate an ice cream sandwich. I wasn't craving it. Just wanted one. Right after I ate it I said to Paul, why did I do that?

  5. I wouldn't stress about the coffee at all. I LOVE coffee and firmly believe it has many benefits, from increased recovery time after workouts to decrease in depression symptoms, dementia, certain cancers, and the list goes on. Plus, it is believed that coffee is not as dehydrating as once thought, and even can contribute to your hydration (if not consumed in excess). That being said, I know there are some drawbacks to coffee consumption for some, and I know drinking plain water is great for you...why don't you have a glass of water next to your coffee and alternate? For every sip of coffee you need a sip of water! My recent bad habit is having a Zipfizz on my runs. LOVE the blueberry raspberry flavor. I know it is supposed to "healthy energy", and it does have a good dose of vitamins (lots of potassium!) and other things like grape seed extract, but I still equate it to a "diet" drink ;)

    1. Dang I love your outlook on the coffee! I have never heard of Zipfizz. Does it have fake sugar? I say if there is no fake sugar you shouldn't feel guilty at all! If there... well then just feel a little guilty. ;)

    2. Thanks ;) I can only see the positive side of coffee! Unfortunately, Zipfizz does have a little fake sugar-which is why I consider it a bad habit. I am very careful not to have much of the stuff.

  6. Bad habits...I tend to take a snack in the car when I go to pick up the kids from school--usually something cracker or chips--and at night in front of the TV; forget about it, right now it is ice cream...
I also drink way too much ice tea in the summer...

    1. I am a cracker and chip girl too! Usually it is my pre dinner snack. And cheese, of course!

  7. Also I just realized this, but I had no idea one could still be full from the night before. I could eat 2 7-course meals for dinner and STILL be hungry for breakfast the next morning.

    1. I am the same way! Almost doesn't matter how big my previous meal was, I am always ready for the next.

    2. Not to be gross but I need to go to the bathroom in the morning and then I am INSTANTLY hungry. Sorry if that is TMI :)

  8. I LOVE coffee but I can't imagine drinking it DURING a workout. I am a plain-water type of girl...usually room-temperature during workouts and COLD after.

I am really bad at eating well before evening/weekend runs, though!

    1. I could never drink coffee while doing cardio but for some reason during my lifting breaks it is fine hehe. I have a client who likes her water room temp during a workout too.

  9. I can't say anything about the eating - that is my norm and you already know I don't fuel at all while running.
Since I don't drink coffee I can't imagine drinking it while working out:)

    1. I have to come to the conclusion that I am the only weirdo who will drink coffee while lifting weights. :)
