Pennsylvania Bucket List

A couple weeks ago, I was doing a long run with my friend Tracy, and she mentioned to me that she had a Pennsylvania Bucket List. This is a list of all the things in Pennsylvania that she wants to do. Of course I wanted to know every single thing she had on her list, and we had fun talking about the places we have been and the places we haven't.

I decided that I wanted to make my own PA Bucket List, so that's what I did! I wanted to share it with you today. Each location is linked up to it's website, but of course I had to tell you a little but about a couple of them.

Let's start out with some places I have never been...

Mutter Museum- The website asks, "Are you ready to be disturbingly informed?" Um, YES!

Red Rabbit- This is a drive in restaurant that I have lived within 30-45 minutes of my entire life, yet I have never been there!

Centralia- The town is abandoned due to a mine fire that is still burning underneath the town!

Steamtown Marathon- From everything I have heard, this is a must do PA marathon!

Johnstown Flood Museum- Paul and I listened to a podcast about the Johnstown flood, so now we really want to see the museum.

Kayak Yellow Breeches- The Yellow Breeches is a creek that winds through central PA. We always see people kayaking on it and we want to do it too!

Christkindl Market- Mifflinburg transforms their town into a little German Christmas market every year! My mom is a crafter here (Hats by Peach!) so it is ridiculous we have not visited yet! Unfortunately, I will be in Florida during Christkindl Market this year, so we will probably have to wait until next year to go.

Places I have been but don't remember/Didn't do to the degree I would like:

Pennsylvania Grand Canyon- I went as a kid but don't remember much. I would love to go back with Paul and explore.

Lake Raystown- We vacationed here when I was a kid and I remember it was fun. We would do to stay in a cabin, though. I don't camp.... and I am steadfast!

Mount Gretna- I ran on trails here but that is it. There is more to do! The lake, Jigger Shoppe, rail trail...

Gettysburg- I went for a field trip in 4th grade. Paul and I went a couple years ago but didn't do much because we were too hangry! It is sort of ridiculous what we live 40 minutes away from such a history rich area and we don't take advantage of it!

Things I have done and think everyone should do!

Fallingwater- Paul took me there a couple years ago. It is WONDERFUL and I think most people would enjoy it. You can read about our trip here.

Appalachian Trail- I have run/hiked on a lot of the trail in PA. It is gorgeous!

Rickett's Glen State Park- Paul and I went a few years ago and I went with my family as a child. There is a beautiful trail that follows many waterfalls.

Duquesne Incline- Paul and I went to Pittsburgh for our 1 year anniversary (or was it two years???) and did this.

Millersburg Ferry- I grew up in Millersburg so I road the ferry all the time!

Have you been to any of these places?
What am I missing from my PA Bucket List!?
What is on YOUR state's bucket list?

  1. PA has so many cool (and beautiful places). I would love to visit Fallingwater. Have you ever read the book "Loving Frank" by Nancy Horan? It's such a good book. I really had no idea about Frank Lloyd Wright's life outside of his amazing architecture.

    1. I did not read that book but I will look into it! PA definitely doesn't compare to CO. My CO bucket list would be sooooo long, but luckily I got to do a couple cool things- Incline, Pike's Peak, Mt. Evans, Boulder (to name a few!)

  2. You've picked out some very beautiful places! I have never been to any of those, but many of them look intriguing. I'd like to go to that drive in just because the bunny logo is so darn cute ;) The Mutter museum looks VERY interesting!

    1. Yes, I think I am going to have to take my friend Tracy to the Mutter Museum because it is on her list too and Paul doesn't like gross stuff. :)

  3. A state bucket list is such an interesting idea! Kinzua bridge state park looks gorgeous!

This is quite a list lady, you better get crackin'!

I can actually say I've done one of these - the Duquesne incline! Visiting Pittsburgh is the only time I've been to PA, although I've visited a few times now. It's going to sound weird to say, but I actually recognize Johnstown floods from a Bruce Springsteen song.

    1. I wondered if anyone NOT from PA had heard of the Johnstown Flood! It is actually a fascinating story. It is quite a list, but luckily it is all nearby. Paul and I were thinking of doing a bucket list road trip this summer! I created a 10 hour loop which would pretty much allow us to circle central PA and hit the Grand Canyon, Kinzua, the flood museum, and the Flight 93 memorial! Obviously over a long weekend or something.

  4. I lived in PA as a kid, and I have barely touched your list...
One of the things I have always wanted to do in NH is go to the top of Mt. Washington in winter, in one of the snow tank things. I will have to wait until the kids are on their own, because it is dangerous.

    1. I googled the snow tank thing you spoke of- that DOES look scary! :)

  5. What a beautiful state!!! We have some pretty killer sights over here on the west coast with the mountains and ocean. Whistler, BC is just 2.5 hours away from us, and I've been there a zillion times. There's a lot more on the list and I wouldn't even know where to start!

  7. Love your list! The Christkindle market is near me so when you go let me know!

I have been wanting to visit Bushkill falls. Don't know if it's worth it but I had some college friends that would go there and take pictures and it was beautiful.
Also in Jim Thorpe is a mansion that was the inspiration for the design of the haunted mansion at disney. They hold murder mystery parties there and I have been intrigued!

You should totally do the murder mystery at Jim Thorpe! I know you love Disney AND murder mysteries. I'll watch your dog. :)

    1. I like it because it makes everything seem more doable and cheaper since traveling is so expensive.

  11. "Are you ready to be disturbingly informed?" HECK YES! The website makes it look like a great place to visit in honor of Halloween! You should go this weekend!

Now I really want to make a Florida bucket list - or even just a South Florida bucket list. Our state is so long that it takes a million hours to get from one end to the other!

  13. What a fun list! We were in PA over the summer celebrating my FIL's 80th birthday. We stayed a Nemacolin, which was SO cool. We also visited Fallingwater, which I'd be in awe of for years.
