I had this sports bra for 16 YEARS!!!! (Friday 5!)

Hey all! I am linking up with Running on Happy and Fairytales and Fitness for Friday 5 2.0!

Guys, I have a sports bra that I bought at least 16 years ago. And it's not a bra that just sits in my drawer. It's a bra I wear regularly!

I bought this purple Mossimo sports bra for $3 at a Good Will in Punxsutawney, PA. I was in college. I went thrift shopping with my friends Jenna and Acacia, and I found this beauty.

I know it doesn't look purple now, but I promise you it was purple sixteen years ago.

It still fits fine and it has weathered many washings. It doesn't smell... holy hell, I do not know how it doesn't smell, but somehow it doesn't! It is still fits fine.

The reason I know for sure I had this bra for at least sixteen years is because I remember we were going to get back so late from our thrift shopping trip that I would miss my piano lesson. I only took piano during my freshman and sophomore years, so I know I either got it when I was 18 or 19 years old. Therefore, it's at least 16 full years old right now. In fact, it's nearly 17 years old!

I know I know, it's probably time to get rid of it. But why? It's kind of cool to have something so old! And it STILL WORKS! I wear it a couple times a week!

What do you think, is it time to ditch the 16 year old sports bra!?

What is the oldest article of clothing you still wear regularly?

  1. Oh, there's no way that would have ever held up my girls! LOL! I do have some very old sports bras tho. My favorite brand is still Champion. Not the Target kind, but the real ones.

    1. I have "almost As" so there's nothing to hold up over here hehe. It's nice when you can find a quality bra that holds up over the years.

  2. You may have had it for 16 years, but if you got it at Goodwill, who knows how many years the previous owner had it. It might be a classic! ..haha. I'm surprised the elastic in it has not gone bad yet.

    1. I know! I mean, if anything the bra is a little tighter but that is because my back got a little bigger from lifting. But it's nice and snug and it's just the color that faded and then of course the fabric over the elastic is fraying as pictured.

  3. Oh my that's just crazy and super funny! I guess you have a hard time parting with things. Must have great memories!

  4. That's amazing that you've had that sports bra for so long! I've probably had some sports bras for 3 or 4 years but don't think they will last for 16 lol!

    1. Well report back if they do last that long. ;)

  5. That is hilarious! The rule of thumb for 'big gals' is that for a regularly worn sports bra it 'should never have a birthday' bc the elastic gives out and support is gone. If you don't have that problem, why not have a sportsbra for 16 years!

Personally, I would ditch it. The color is faded, some of the fabric is frayed. Buy yourself a really pretty new one. You're lucky you can get a good sports bra that works for you just about at any store really inexpensively. Take advantage!! I have to special order mine and they are pricey AF!

    1. I remember us having a convo about how expensive your bras can be. That freaking sucks. I guess if I cared about cute bras I'd buy them but to me they just have to be functional. None of my running clothes are cute because I really don't care what I look like. This past year though, I have bought some cute athleisure clothes. I love them!

  6. I would probably ditch the sports bra at this point. I figure working out is something I value and do each day, so I do replace my sports bras when they start to wear out. I wear cheap sports bras though, and I have a ton (hello, Walmart). But I'm like you that I will wear things until they wear out- I have clothes from college that still fit, and they're still in my closet and occasionally worn. I've read the stuff about how sports bras should never have birthdays, etc, but there's not much for mine to hold up and they seem like new after just a year. I did recently throw some how that I'd had for at least five years, though.

Also I'm super impressed that not only did it last this long, but it wasn't some sort of super expensive bra that lasted this long. Things just aren't made like they used to be. We had to replace our microwave (from 2005), but my parents 1980s microwave is still going strong!

    1. I have a few dresses from college too. A lot of stuff I got rid of though because they're just not in style.

That's very impressive about your parent's microwave! I agree, they don't make things the way they used to. But our society has changed so much. We buy, buy buy and update and get the new trends and redecorate... It's like we don't want to INVEST in something for the long term.

  7. Wow, I don't think I have kept anything for 16 years! My running bras are about 4-5 years old (I know I need to replace them) but haven't found anything similar that I like.

    1. Maybe when you find ones you love, buy double, so you have them when it's time to replace them.

  8. I have a few older bras that I use for lifting, but even with my small tatas, I have to rotate out my bras after a few years. I can tell when they don't offer enough support.

  9. Wow. And I thought I was bad. I usually buy a few new ones every other year or so and do get rid of older ones. I'm small on top, though, so that helps me get away with it.

I have definitely kept certain clothing items at least that long, but usually not the intimates!

    1. I'm small too, I agree that helps us get away with it since we don't need as much support.

This summer I did overhaul my underwear. So please don't think I'm still wearing underwear from college... gross! haha!

  10. The sports bras I wore 16 years ago weren't supportive enough for me then, let alone now! I do have one that's a good 7-8 years old though. I think it's the first really good running bra I bought.

I keep my favorite clothes until they are beyond worn out too. But if it was me I think I would relegate that bra to just lounging around the house.

  11. Oh my goodness! This post is everything and I'm loving it because I don't feel so bad that I've had my Champion sports bra from basic training for 20 years!! lol. My hubby wanted to throw it away and I told him that my commitment to this sports bra has lasted longer than we've been married. :)

And keep it! As a funny reminder... of life!

  12. My mom still wears alot of her cloths from high school which are even older than this! I will tell you the same thing I told her. Time to toss it. LOL but she would say its the sign of well made clothing, why get rid of it.

    1. Are her HS clothes still stylish? I do not think I have anything from high school but I do have several dresses from college.

  13. I am impressed AND grossed out ;) Just kidding! I have some super old regular bras that I only just dumped this year, and they were probably from high school, so at least 14 years old. They definitely had stretched out but I could still make them work, so why toss them?! My sports bras last a long time because like you, I don't have too much for them to work with, so they hold their stretch a long time haha.

Wow regular bras from HS? I bow down to you. :)

  14. Now that bra could probably tell some stories LOL I have a few that are more than 3-4 years old. I have a lot to choose from, so I don't wear those particular ones repeatedly...not sure why I even still have them LOL

    1. I know! I am pretty sure it was brand new when I bought it. I feel like back then I thought it would have been gross to buy one used. But sometimes things at Good Will still have the tags.

  16. Damn, this bra wouldn't hold anything up for me anymore... LOL I think it's time to get a new one, but you definitely got some good use out of it :)

  17. Somebody probably already said this, but that is some quality elastic to not have popped by now! I had a pair of underwear I bought a few months before I got married, I remember because I bought it when I was supposed to be shopping for shoes for my wedding. And I just recently threw it out, because it had holes in strange places... but that lasted me 13 years, six more years than my marriage.
