First World Problems! (My freaking romper.)

Remember that SUPER CUTE romper I got at Target a couple months ago? It was about $23 and it was the perfect romper for me. The romper was fun and stylish, but not too young looking or revealing for a gal in her mid 30's.

Well... I only got to wear it one time. I wore it to Long Trout Winery and then out to dinner with Paul.

It was soooooo hot the day I wore it so I ended up washing my romper. I washed it in the machine with cold water. I air dried it on a hanger because I didn't want it to shrink. (We air dry most of our clothes.)

BUT IT DID SHRINK!

When I tried to put it on this past Saturday, I could barely get my arms/shoulders into it. The waist was so tight that it was rubbing on my bellybutton ring and irritating it. The shorts were a little bit shorter and tighter than they were when I wore the romper the first time.

First, I was SO FREAKING PISSED! Then I was sad because I only got to wear my romper one time.

It seems like everyone I know loves Target and gets a lot of clothes there. I usually never find clothes there. They don't fit right and they are made cheaply, yet they are not that cheaply priced. This romper was the first thing I bought at Target in years. (Besides swimsuits. Mossimo has the only swimsuit bottoms that cover up my entire rear end.) I am disappointed that my first good Target find shrunk when I washed it.

Luckily I was able to return the romper for store credit, but what a hassle!

Paul said, "Why don't you go out and find another romper?" But I told him it took me WEEKS to find this romper and it was exhausting. I went to so many stores. I don't have the energy to look for another one.

I'm really sad because I wanted to take it on vacation.

RIP Target romper. I hardly knew ye.
Do you get clothes at Target?
Where do you buy your swimsuits?
Any good stories about clothes shrinking?

  1. That really stinks! I like getting shorts at Target. I think they are a good price (often buy one, get one 50% off), comfortable and last long. The last top I bought at Target shrunk like your romper when I washed it. It went from being the perfect length to hanging ABOVE my waist. I do not need to be wearing a crop top. I also have one pair of trousers from Target that I can never wear because they stretched out after I washed them the first time. Now I only get shorts there!

  2. Ugh...I hate when clothes shrink. I try so hard to avoid that but what a bummer it happened anyway. I'm glad they gave you store credit but still a pain and now you don't have a romper. I honestly really don't buy clothes at Target. I have a few t-shirts that are nice but other than that, not really. I just never find anything I like.

  3. Thats so frustrating! I hate when my clothes shrink, especially if I only wore them once or twice. I feel like whenever I buy pants they always stretch out or shrink!

    1. My pants definitely stretch out when wearing them but normally drying them sucks them back up to their most perfect form. I mainly wear leggings anyway though!

  4. Megan - Can you buy the next size up in the same romper and wash it right away so it will shrink to a good size? Or would that be dumb? probably so, huh? Don't give up hope, you will find another one!
I hate Target clothes, you are correct in saying that they are cheaply made, yet not that inexpensive. I have bought running clothes there and I do really like them, but never anything else. Ain't worth it! I usually buy my bathing suits at JCPenney or Kohl's. They are made pretty well at those places. Enjoy your day! Kristen

    1. That is valid advice and I thought of it! But one, I figured they probably didn't still have the romper since I bought it over 60 days ago (but honestly I didn't go check so they could still have it), and two, I was worried it would shrink every time I washed it, which is probably dumb.

I have bought running clothes there in the past as well- their C9 Brand seems to be fine! I do love me some Kohls. I just washed my cold shoulder top from there and hopefully that didn't shrink...

  5. What a bummer! I do remember the hassle you went through to fin the perfect romper. In general, I do think most rompers are kind of short.
I don't usually buy clothes at Target. I mean I have nothing against Target clothes, I just don't never need anything when I go in there. However, I have bought most of my swimsuits there.

    1. They definitely are short, which was why it was hard to find one that covered up on top so I wasn't exposing ALL kinds of skin. Do you get Mossimo swim suits? I love those and they last. Ironically, that's the same brand as my swimsuit!

  6. See, I'm the type of person to make a vow to never wear a romper ever again. I hold grudges.

    1. Haha! That's me and EZ Pass. They screwed me once over ten years ago. NEVER AGAIN.

  7. That's a cute romper. I can't believe it shrunk although you washed it with cold water and let it air-dry! What a bummer. I usually have good experiences with most clothes from Target, though.

I'd like to know where people buy their bikinis/swim suits too... I can never fit in what they have.

    1. I'm glad your Target clothes experiences are good. All my swimsuit experiences from Target are top notch! Have you tried the Mossimo Brand from Target for swimsuits? I have a small waist but a RUNNER'S BEHIND and most brands leave my butt cheeks hanging out the sides of the bikini bottoms... Not Mossimo. And you can mix and match tops and bottoms. Because I normally need a smaller top than bottom. Good luck!

  8. Oh no! I'm sorry to hear about your romper! that is frustrating! but I'm glad you got your money back.

I was thinking that I bought clothes at target, but can't remember a single thing right now... then realized the last thing I got there was a black tanktop that was too big, even though it was marked xs.

This is the only shrinkage story I can remember. My ex-husband bought a wool sweater at target, he wore it once and carelessly put it in the laundry, even thought it was a "dry clean only" item. I used to do the laundry for both of us and only sorted things out by colors, so his sweater got put in with the dark delicates and dried there too. I shrank down to what could only be described as a kid's size. I felt awful and bought him a replacement, but in a different color. He was not happy... even thought it was his fault.

    1. I think Target uses vanity sizing because my romper was an XS and I should NOT be wearing an XS in a junior's sized romper! That is just ridiculous!

He should not have thrown that in the wash!!!! Paul and I both do wash and we will wash each other's clothes. I am normally the one who has items that should not be dried, and he has learned what those items are because I told him. Whenever I get something new that I don't want dried, I have to tell him, otherwise it is my fault.

  9. It stinks that the romper shrank so much because it really was cute on you! I'm glad you got the store credit and Target was nice about it, but it sucks to not have the piece of clothes. This happened to me in high school with a pair of khaki capri pants from JC Penney. They were so cute on me and I was thrilled to have them, then... they shrank! JC Penney gave me money back but still, I wanted a good pair of pants.

    1. I wish clothes were made better in general. I mean, sometimes I buy something for really cheap and I know it won't last forever, but I'm okay with it because I barely spent any money on it. But when you drop money on something (IS $23 money? TO me it is!) I feel like it should last at least a year or two! Especially if it's not something you would wear daily, like a romper.

  10. That's awful! I used to buy the occasional clothes from Target, but I don't anymore. I don't buy bathing suits from there either, though I need a new bathing suit store. I used to get mine from Victoria Secret since I could mix and match and get exactly the kind of coverage I want, but they don't have bathing suits anymore.

    1. That surprises me they don't sell suits anymore. I always liked their bathing suits, though they were a little expensive so I never bought them. I bet they were made well though.

  11. Thanks for the tip about the rayon. I have no clue what this was made out of. I just assumed if I air dried it all would be good!
