I think I'm gonna go back to dying my own hair and getting it cut at Holiday Hair...

When I got all of my hair chopped off and dyed, I went to a legit salon. I didn't think the price was too bad. She charged me $65 for the cut and color. I think the price was a little cheaper than normal because she only charged me for a root touch up since my hair is so short. I tipped $15 and hoped that was enough.

I loved my haircut, but after two weeks, it was already too long for my liking. And my grey roots were already coming in! I managed to go 6 weeks before getting it cut and colored again. She charged me the same, so with tip and everything it was $80.

The next time, I went 8 weeks between appointments. My hair was so wolfy and my greys were INSANE. I ended up buying L'Oreal root touch up spray.

So I had my third appointment last week. I asked my stylist to cut it even shorter than before, which she did. I like it really short so it was no problem. She also dyed it the same color as before. I'm not picky at all, I just don't want greys!

My stylist barely talked to me though. She was really short with me and just seemed uninterested. Now maybe she was in a bad mood or whatever, but I kind of felt like I was bothering her. I hate that feeling... Maybe it was all in my head?

When I checked out, they charged me for a cut and a full hair color, not just root touch up. With tip and everything, it was $90!

It took a long time for me to be okay with paying $80, but $90!? The thing is, I really only like how my hair is for 2 weeks. So it's all that money for just TWO WEEKS of having my hair exactly the way I like it. I don't think it's worth that amount of money for just two weeks!

I think I'm going to start dying it again myself. Boxes of dye are $3 at Dollar General. I know it's bad for your hair, but is any dye good for your hair? And as far as getting it cut, I will just hit up Holiday Hair at the mall. I bet they will do it for $20. I could get it cut every 4 weeks and color it myself for less than half of what it costs to go to the salon every 8 weeks!
What do ya all think? It's not worth it, is it!?

  1. I never pay salons to dye my hair--I always do it myself! It's not only the money, although that's a big part of it, it's also the fact that I don't have time to sit for hours in a salon. I can still get stuff done around here with dye in my hair!

    1. That's a very good point... not just is it worth the money but is it worth the time?

  2. Does that Loreal Root touch up really work?

I agree that is way too much to spend for a hair cut and color on that short of a do! I hope you didn't tip the "annoyed stylist" your normal $15.
Since it sounds like you just want your hair trimmed every few weeks, perhaps you could go to a Barber (maybe where Paul goes)? A friend of mine's mom always had short hair so she went to the local Barber for trims and it only cost her like $8.

    1. Yes, it does work! I did tip her the normal. :( I think you are on the right track. I should go more often and just get a trim. Then it's short like I enjoy it and it won't cost much at all. This is why I like having a blog.... people tell me things I just can't see for myself!

  3. If I wasn't blonde, I would totally do my own hair. Both my sisters have dark hair and often do it themselves. Blonde can look really brassy, though. I have to go every 5 weeks and it's more than you pay which I don't love but have just come to accept. I say go for it. Color it yourself and find someone to cut it cheaper. It will save you a ton of cash and I am all about that!

    1. I'm all about saving cash too if possible! Especially since we have to get a new freaking roof!

  4. Megan - That is way too much to pay that often and dyeing it yourself is a good idea since it's so short. I go about 3 times a year - I get highlights and have medium length hair, so I can go quite a long time between which is good because it does get pricey!

You know, even if your stylist was in a bad mood, she shouldn't have taken it out on anybody. She is in customer service and should be really nice all the time (my stylist is a sweetheart all the time). That is part of her job! and that is how you maintain your clientele! And your humanity!! 1. That is nice you only have to go a few times a year. I love highlights, I got them once a long time ago. Whenever someone is in a bad mood I always try not too be to harsh. I mean, you never know what is going on with people! However, you also have a good point that it is part of her job to at least not make me feel dumb. Kind of like teaching... I'm not always in a great mood but I have to fake it sometimes!

  5. Find a place now while your hair is like you like it. That will give the stylist or barber a good idea as to what you want. They were charging way too much for a short cut. Good luck!

  6. That is about the standard price here so I do my own.
I order Redken -sometimes from Amazon and another online place, depends which is cheaper lol and I promise the quality is a bit better as far as how your hair will feel. I used the boxed dye for year, but I like the quality of this stuff a bit more.
I usually pay about $12 or $13 for a bottle of dye. A bottle of developer is huge and I've had mine for months, it was $20 maybe...
You just need gloves and bowl and I use a brush so I can stipple in my roots real good :)

    1. Sounds like you have totally figured out a way to dye it on your own in a little higher quality of a way than just a $3 box! I always think your hair looks great. Nice strawberry blondeish/reddish, right?

    2. Thanks, the dye is fading faster and faster the white is taking over. I do use strawberry blonde, but I think the shade is called creme brulee...gold tones seem to work for me.

  7. I always go to the cheap salons and dye my own hair. Yes, the pricey places do a better dye job, but the home kits don't do a HORRIBLE job. I can buy a $8 home kit and save 90%! Heck, half the time I only get a haircut because I get a coupon in the mail or something. I've also gotten haircuts at beauty schools and all but one time, have had a good experience (that time was with eyebrow waxing, and they ended up having to pluck because of a problem with the wax- and they did not charge me). So, that's another option too if you have a beauty school nearby.

    1. Oh what kind of places send coupons? Love it! Wendy mentioned a beauty school too and I am going to look into that.

I get my eyebrows waxed and I get made when they end up doing a lot of plucking. I understand that they want to get stray hairs, but some of them just go to town and my eyes water so bad.

  8. I pay $125 + tip for cut and color and I think it's insane and gets me all riled up inside every time I go (granted I have long hair but still). I only go like twice a year bcause it's so expensive. If I had short hair like yours and would have to get a trim every 4 weeks, I would definitely look for a cheaper alternative!

    1. Wow I am riled up for you lol. I don't blame you for only going twice a year. How long does it last and how long do you love it for?

I agree, I need a cheaper alternative with my short hair. And it's so thin. I really have like, no hair at all.

  9. Even when I was highlighting my hair, I wasn't paying that much, and my hair's much longer so highlights would've taken up more dye. $90 is insane.

    1. I know. :( I mean, $75 without tip, but still. I HAVE NO HAIR.

  10. First time commenter! I have been using boxed dye on my hair for 15+ years and I really don't see/feel much of a difference from the times I've had it professionally done, and I just use the cheap Revlon Color Silk that sells for $3 here in San Diego. My natural hair is a darkish dirty blonde and I dye it burgundy red and it comes out beautifully every time. Additionally, I just get my hair cut at Super Cuts for about $15. There is no way I could justify the expense of getting it professionally done every 4-6 weeks to maintain the color when the boxed dye works just as well and I don't have to be at a salon for hours and can do it on my own time, like at 8pm, versus during the standard 9-5.

Love your blog! Been following for a few weeks now, you are so entertaining and I really like how it's not all fitness and stats all the time. Happy Wednesday, cheers!

    1. Thanks for commenting and thanks for reading, Crissy!

Your red hair sounds beautiful. I used to do mine a dark red in college. San Diego!? Ah... you live where we want to vacation. :)

You make very good points about not only cost but my TIME. During the summer, it's no big deal, but during the school year, my time is much more valuable. After reading all of these comments I feel pretty certain I am going back to the boxed dye. And I will try a place like Holiday Hair for a cut. I am seriously not picky about hair. Especially with mine so short. Even if it comes out weird, it will grow out in two weeks.

Honestly, all my fitness stats aren't that exciting right now! But I think I've always tried to blog about random stuff. Thank you so much for reading!

  11. Ok, so I don't own a hair salon, but they should not have charged you $90 for a touch up and a haircut! that is just ridiculous !

I say go with the $3 hair dye ! You rock the hair either way!

    1. Thanks girl! After reading all of these comments, it is solidifying my idea to just go with the $3, although I do have an idea with what Wendy said...

  12. I used to color my own hair. But then the grays rebelled and the box color only lasted for 2 weeks. I needed professional help. I found it at the upscale salon where I got my hair cut. As it turns out, the salon has a training program for potential stylists. They are legit beauty school grads--think residency program where their skills get honed. The interns are always looking for models, and I was more than happy to oblige. After all, this place isn't going to let anyone walk out looking bad! The interns are completely supervised. Color was $10 and highlights were $25. I was in grad school at the time, so this was such a huge find.

My advice? Find an upscale salon chain in your area and see if they have a program like this. Sometimes it's one of those "on the downlow" things too. Maybe one of the teachers you work with knows about this?

    1. Great idea, Wendy! One of my colleagues has a step daughter who does hair and she is pretty young- not that far out of school. Maybe she is "in the know" in where these places are. Thanks so much for that tip!

  13. That sounds about what I would expect to pay for a cut and touchup, but I go to a salon right in downtown here in Fort Lauderdale, where prices are probably just generally higher than where you are? I've never been to your city but I gather it's kind of small? Although you're a stone's throw from NYC and can you imagine what prices must be like there? omg.

When I used to color my hair just one color I sometimes did it myself. I'm too afraid to try highlights/lowlights on my own though! I am sure I would come out looking crazy... or more than likely I would get tired by the time I was halfway done and want to just stop :D

    1. Your first instinct is right, where I live it should DEFINITELY be cheaper than DT Fort Lauderdale.

I have no idea how to do highlights and lowlights! I am sure if I wanted to do that I would not do it myself. Although I do remember highlighting my friend Zach's hair when I was in high school. I wonder if he remembers that? I will have to ask him. Why did he trust me!? Why did I think that was fun!?
