Insomnia - How to feel sick tired the next day.

Monday night was horrible. My body was so incredibly tired but I just could not sleep. I tried reading… I ended up reading a whole book. I tried playing solitaire on my phone. That didn’t work. I got up and talked to Paul. Went back to bed. I got up and pet the kitties. Went back to bed. From 9:30pm until 1:30am (the last time I remember looking at the clock) all I did was toss and turn and think.

Guys, I hate thinking. Well, I hate the kind of thinking I do when I am trying to fall asleep. I basically think about everything on my to do list, everything I am behind on, any terrible thing that could happen, any terrible thing that has happened… I just can’t turn my brain off!

And then I get anxiety about not being asleep. I start counting down how many hours I have until I have to get up in the morning… which causes more anxiety. It’s just a horrible cycle.

To top it all off, I was scheduled to do speed work in the morning. And of all types of speed work, it was 400s! 400s on 4.5 hours of sleep!!!!!!!! (I did get up and do them, and it was PURE HELL, in case you were wondering.)

The rest of the day was off and on. I felt fine in the morning. In the afternoon I felt sick tired, but by 10:00pm I was wide awake, messing around on Facebook. I swear the time spent trying to fall asleep is always worse than the sick tired feeling I get the next day.

I would bet money that 95% of the people reading this post know what I’m talking about. When I told a couple people at work about my sleepless night, they all nodded and knew exactly the situation I was in because they had been there before.

My only hope is that tonight I am so tired that I am out like a light as soon as my head hits my pillow.
Anyone else out there have nights like this? I know I can't be the only one!

  1. Monday night I was up from midnight until 1:30 am tossing and turning. I think it was because I found out we had lay offs in my department. Yesterday was a difficult day and by last night, I crashed. Now today I got up an hour before I normally do. Sigh...so frustrating.

    1. Oh no I am so sorry that not only you couldn't fall asleep, but that it was for a scary worry like possibly being laid off. Is everything okay?

    2. Thank you! Yeah, I think so. Normally they do a round of lay offs and are done for a bit. So I just keep doing what I am doing :) And trying to get sleep!!! I am not happy when I don't get my full 8 hours. I am amazed you did speed work. Girl, you rock.

    3. Good, I am glad everything is okay. I can't imagine how stressful that is. You get up really early though because you're always commenting early and you're two hours behind me, right?

    4. Yes, I get up at 4 am!! It sounds crazy but I am wired that way and I actually LOVE it. But if I wake up "early" it's like more like 3:00 am which is basically still night. I think I was a baker or a milkman in my former life!!

  2. I can most definitely relate, especially to the part where you just lay there counting down the hours which just makes you more anxious. It's the worst when you can't sleep the next night either. Hopefully today you'll be out like a light! Maybe have Paul rub your back? Usually having my back rubbed puts me right out after a couple of days with poor sleep!

    1. Paul did something even better... he laid in bed and played Logo Hero (smartphone game where you guess logos) with me to help me fall asleep. I don't know why we love that game but we do, and all the thinking makes me tired.

  3. I feel for you. It happens to me a lot. I usually go downstairs and watch TV for a bit, then try again. I hate the feeling the next day too!

  4. This was me last night. I simply could not sleep. I was so annoyed. I got out of bed at least 5 times. I am feeling fine right now, but let's see how I am in a few hours. Booo. I'm sorry you had a terrible night. I completely understand your anxiety. There have been nights I've woken up in full blown panic attacks. It's an issue I'm working through. Here's to a better night sleep tomorrow. And I can't believe you still did your speed! We are a crazy bunch.

    Also, thank you for your sweet comment on my blog post. It meant a lot to me. And I totally understand re-writing it to get the errors out. That's the type A in me.

  5. I have taken my husband's ativan before to sleep and that works. But sleeping pills- I will sleep for 12 hours and want to keep going if I take one of those!

  6. More than I care to admit. In fact last night I was up every hour, but I was pretty sure I knew why I was anxious and tonight "should" be fine. But yeah it's the worst. If you remember, I didn't sleep 4 days straight before my half marathon. EVEN with prescribed medication. Good times.

  7. Ah, I'm sorry to hear you had one of those nights. I always have them the night before a big day. I'm already anticipating losing sleep the night before the marathon. Sometimes brains just don't shut down! I hope you sleep well tonight!

    1. It's so hard to sleep the night before a race! I don't think I have ever, EVER slept more than 5 hours the nigh before a marathon!

  8. I did the most amazing 400m after a good night's sleep, so I know how you feel about NOT getting enough sleep to do runs, especially speed work!

    Can I ask what your average 400m pace is?

    1. I am glad you had good sleep for your speed work! It is so key. I don't keep track of my pace for each 400 (I guess I should) but I glance down once in awhile. When I start, I'm below a 6 min mile. By the time I'm on my 10th 400, I'm up to like a 6:30 min mile.

  9. I have never, ever struggled sleeping 8-10 hours a night (and have usually been a grumpy bitch if I didn't get it!), but in the past 3 weeks I haven't slept more than 5 hours a night. Once I fall asleep I'm fine, but it just takes me hours to fall asleep and then I usually wake up early in a complete panic. It's a horrible feeling and I hope it stops soon! I have no idea how I'm functioning fine - and still training - on so little sleep and food.

    1. I don't know how you are doing it either! It must be adrenaline or something. I really hope you are able to rest and eat normally soon!
