Thinking Out Loud! - Vacations!

Thank you to Amanda @ Running With Spoons for this Thinking Out Loud link up! Somtimes my TOL posts are random thoughts and sometimes they have a theme. Today's theme is.... VACATIONS!

1. My favorite vacation happened two summers ago when Paul and I went to San Francisco. We spent 5 nights there, then drove down Route 1 and spent 2 nights in Monterey. I love California so much and wish I lived there!

San Fran 2012

2. The craziest vacations I have ever been on were during my early 20s. Me and a bunch of my community theater friends would rent a beach house. We'd fit 15-20 people into a place that was only supposed to sleep 10. I can't even tell you some of the funniest stories about these trips because both my mom and grandma read my blog... but let's just say it was a ton of inappropriate, harmless fun!

Me and Mar, OC Maryland 2004. Fun times!

3. One place I will never go on vacation again is Ocean City Maryland. We were there about three years ago and decided we were done. It's full of young, loud 20 somethings (aka, me and my theater friends 9 years ago!). We're too old for that shit! Now we go to Ocean City New Jersey when we went a semi close beach getaway. It's much quieter and cleaner there.

4. When I was a kid, my parents took us to the beach a lot. They also took us camping, which I grew to hate. (As much as I enjoy trail running, I have no desire to camp.) I think those were the only two types of vacations we went on but we went at least once a summer. They also took us to Knoebel's Grove every summer, which is worth mentioning because I still love Knoebel's!

Camping at Lake Raystown in 1994 with my brothers.

My older brother and I getting off the Haunted House at Knoebel's.
I look pissed because he was messing with me while we were in there.

5. Vacations on my bucket list: California (again!), Alaska, Australia, Europe, Colorado, Florida.

Yosemite... totally on our Cali list!

6. A surprising place I have never been... Disney World. I have never been there and have no desire to go! I wanted to go when I was a kid, though.

7. States I have been to: California, Virginia, Massachusetts, Connecticut, Maryland, Pennsylvania (duh), Delaware, New York, Ohio, Kentucky, Vermont, New Jersey, D.C. (I am not including states I drove through or states I have been only in an airport. I only included states I actually either stayed overnight in or did something in- not just got out of the car and got gas.) I do not think this is a lot of states. I have a feeling most people my age have been to way more states than this!

8. Countries I have been to: USA (duh) and Canada. What can I say, we are not world travelers (yet!).

What is on your vacation bucket list?
Favorite/least favorite vay cay?
How many states/countries have you been to?

    1. That would be a double whammy trip- to get to go to Europe AND run a marathon there! :)

  2. I wish I lived in Cali too, their weather is too perfect all the time. I still don't understand how you have no desire to go to Disney!

  3. I've been to 28 countries with another coming up next month, I loooove travel :) Big bucket list trips I want to take are to Cambodia/Thailand (both in the same trip), Argentina, Iceland to see the northern lights, and Japan. There are so many other places on my to-see list though!

  4. I can't believe you didn't include a note about your upcoming Hawaii trip in here! If I were you it would be all I could think about!

I wonder which state would be the best for a run blogger Ragnar...? :)

    1. I didn't want to mention Hawaii because I feel like I mention it every other day and I don't want to bore people! :) I have to be honest... I am not sure what Ragner is. So many people write about it...

  5. Found your blog through Karen's Running Over the Hill. Love your list of vacation and happy to hear that you loved San Francisco so much. We just moved from San Francisco to Denver and I miss it so much. Fortunately, we have family there so we go back fairly often (was just there last week!). I highly recommend Yosemite! One of my favorite places in the world. Thanks to all the lodging available in the valley, you can go and not have to camp!

    1. So cool! You lived somewhere I want to go again and moved to somewhere I want to visit!! Isn't it crazy to me it's a vacation but to you it's your LIFE :) I doubt anyone wants to vacation to central PA... hehehe. That is awesome that I can maybe go to Yosemite and not have to camp. :)

  6. Great post. Fiancé and I have started talking about destination runs so we can do a vacation and run at the same time. Great places would be Cali, Colorado, Washington, and Vegas. Not sure about international runs.

  7. Considering I'm from Australia, which is so damn isolated, I'm impressed with how many places I've been! I've been to Indonesia, Hawaii, New Zealand and about 10 European countries. It does help that I now live in Europe!

    1. That is pretty good! I feel like it is easier (and waaaaay less expensive) for Europeans to travel to all kinds of Europeans countries. We just don't have the money required to travel such great distances!

  8. That's not a bad list! I absolutely love Cali too and wished I live there. Perfect weather foreverrrrr. I have a rather long bucket list but definitely Northern California (i've already done San diego and francisco), Europe, and Peru!

  9. Alaska and Australia are on my bucket list as well! As is Greece, Egypt, and New Zealand. And I can't believe you don't want to go to Disneyland! I LOVE that place

  10. Greece and Thailand are my number one places on my bucket list. I'd also like to travel Europe and see Japan. I've been to Oregon, Washington, Nevada, Arizona, Connecticut, Vermont, New York, Washington DC, Massachusetts, Hawaii, Spain, and England. I've also spent a good 10 hours in the airport in Texas. But I don't think that counts.

  11. When I read posts like this, it reminds me how badly I need to get out more! Where have you been in Canada? You may have told me, but I forget. I love that picture of you and your brother...lol.

    1. The brother pic... I looooved the outfit I was wearing in that pic because the shorts were elastic and they were so comfy!!! You will laugh at our "big" Canada trip. We were in Buffalo for the weekend so we drove into Canada to see the falls. We went up some big tower to see them too. We were only in Canada for maybe 2 hours. This is back before you needed a passport between US and Canada because I still don't even have a passport! Well, I have my Runner's Passport ;)

  12. My sister and I are big travelers so we have visited plenty of places, including Europe and most of the Southern Islands.
One place I never had any desire to go was Alaska. My husband wanted to always visit there though, so I took him for his birthday a few years ago. I now admit that it is beautiful and worth the trip...haha!
I know this is probably going to make me unpopular for saying this, but I really do think you and Paul would enjoy Disney World! I know many of couples that said they would never go there unless they had children, but when they did go, they loved it! There is a ton of adult activities to do too and I think you would love the Epcot Center, there is So much to learn!
As far as bucket list, I would like to visit California as an adult. My sister has been there multiple times, but i haven't been there since my parents took me to Disneyland as a toddler ( pre-sister) so I obviously don't remember much.
Great post Meg! You have inspired me to create my own list of places I've been. Very fun!

    1. Awesome I look forward to reading about where you have been! That is cool you liked Alaska. I never really thought about Alaska until one of my piano students went and they told me about it. Then I started researching it and realized how gorgeous it was. If we go, it will probably be a cruise because then you can see lots of the different beautiful sights with driving/flying all over the place.
