I just have to get through the first 7 minutes.

The first seven minutes of the day are hardest for me. My alarm goes off anywhere between 5:00 and 5:45. I am awakened from a deep sleep, thanks to my diphenhydramine pill I take before bed. It's dark out, and I get a horrible pit in my stomach. I don't want to get up. I don't want to go to work. I can't face this day. It's a crushing feeling!

But of course I get up. I go right to the guestroom and put on the workout clothes I laid out the night before. I'm still tired and the light is bright. The cats are sleeping- they are too smart to get up this early unless there is food involved.

I go to the bathroom and wash my face. Then I walk quietly to the kitchen (we have a one story house and Paul is still sleeping) and pour my iced coffee. I sit at the island/bar in the kitchen and sip my coffee while I mess around on the internet and my body wakes up.

It's at some point during this time that the horrible feeling I had when I woke up goes away. I'm awake. The day is happening and I can face it. This isn't so bad.

Seven minutes is what it takes for me to feel human in the morning and not like going back to bed and sleeping the whole day away.

Of course, this doesn't happen on a weekend. It has nothing to do with whether I like my job or not. I has to do with just facing life and people. I guess that's hard to do when you just woke up!
How long does it take for you to be able to function in the morning?

  1. I am a morning person to a fault--really does not matter when I go to sleep my eyes pop open by 4 am (sometimes a bit earlier) and I am immediately ready to go! I am glad Rick has taught himself to sleep through me getting up early and going about my day (I try to be quiet but I think I am kind of noisy...)

    1. Sometimes I feel bad if I am loud and then I'm like, wait I a minute, I'm the one getting my ass up and going to work so i can be as loud as I want!

  2. I am a morning person, and wow reading the comment above I think I am her twin. I am always wide wide awake by 4 am if not before. I love mornings. ask me to function after 10pm though and it isn't pretty!

    1. ..at least you make it to 10 pm! Ask me to function after 8 pm and I don't even know if there would be a pulse!

  3. Oh this doesn't not make me excited to start waking up early for school. I've been able to wake up whenever I wanted to for a long while now. I know this adjustment is going to be hard!

  4. It can take me anywhere from 5 to 20 minutes, depending on the day. Surprisingly, the process, the amount of time, and the feeling are pretty much all the same when I wake up earlier for a workout as they are when I wake up slightly less early to go right to work. You'd think I'd take this knowledge and use it to wake up earlier to run more often, but no. Stubborn Morning Brain is stubborn.

    Is it possible to not be a night owl OR a morning person?? I can't stay up late AND I can't get up early! What gives?!? :-(

    1. I think it is possible! Is it possible to enjoy getting up early and getting my workout done and at the same time HATE it?

  5. It takes me longer than 7 minutes--maybe 15. I do like to wake up earlier than everyone else so that I can shake those feelings before the kids and hubby wake up...It takes me a while to be able to talk to people in the morning!

  6. The days I wake up at 5:45 it takes me about 5-10 minutes to feel awake. Which is good because I'm put the door and on the way to they gym by 5:55 on those mornings.

  7. SEVEN minutes? Lucky duck. It takes me like, 2 hours lol. I have to have my coffee and a nice little poo before I go for a run otherwise I don't even bother.

    1. Well I would PREFER to have a couple hours to wake up but then I'd have to get up at like 3:30am !

  8. Even though I am a morning person and I would wake up early on my own anyway there is something about having to get up to an alarm that makes it harder. But usually after a few minutes I am good to go!

  9. Yes yes yes. I have to set two alarms, and make myself GET OUT OF BED. if i think about it for a little bit, i will roll over and keep sleeping. and i wake up groggy too, thanks to trazadone. but at least i can fall asleep and stay asleep! i guess that's important too hahah.

    1. I had such problems falling and staying asleep this past school year and finally found something that works. I am only groggy the first couple minutes.

  10. I am a morning person to a fault. I like getting up sometime between 6am-6:30am everyday, even on the weekends. I feel sharp, energized, and ready to conquer the day when I first open my eyes. Even though my husband and I set an alarm, both of us are pretty good about waking up a few minutes before it goes off.

    That being said... these last few weeks have been horrific due to pregnancy. I hate sleep right now and look forward to the mornings more than anything!

    Is it hard for you to adjust from a summer schedule to school schedule?

    1. That is great you feel so energized right from the moment you open your eyes! I wish I felt like that. The first couple minutes of the morning are horrible for me.

      I go to bed pretty early during the school year. As long as I don't sleep in too late on Sundays I can get to bed at a decent time and get up early on Monday. The first few minutes are still terrible though just because I feel dark and lonely.

  11. I've come to the realization that once I have my coffee, I can face anything! What would I do without it? But I do need more than 7 minutes to get moving. I give myself at least a half hour.

  12. I am the same way. The first couple of minutes are definitely the toughest but once I'm up it's all good. I just have difficulties with saying no to the snooze button most days! It always feels like those extra 5 or 10 minutes (times 2 or 3) will make a big difference!

    1. I know a lot of people snooze but I NEVER snooze. Mainly because I set my alarm to the last possible time in which to get up and still have time to get done what I need to!

  13. I like this outlook. I can get up to pee and STILL go back to bed after when I should go run lol. My tired brain talks me out of staying awake! It's very sneaky.
