I am 33.

I recently had a birthday. I am 33. I feel like I am 20. Except when I hang out with 20 year olds. Then I definitely feel 33.

I know 33 is not old. But sometimes I feel old. Like when I look in the mirror and see wrinkles and grey hair. Or when I look down at my sparkly belly button ring I got when I was 22 and think, "Hmmm... how much longer should I keep rocking this?" Sometimes there are cute clothes I want to wear, but then I think to myself, "Wait a minute, I'm thirty-three. Should I be thinking about wearing that!?

The other night I came across this "article" from Rant Chic: 20 Things Women Should Stop Wearing After Age 30. It took forever to load (I have a slow lap top) but I went through each slide anyway. Here is the list in it's entirety, as well as my take on each item I apparently should not be wearing!

Graphic Tees

Disagree. 30s gals can still rock graphic tees!

I wear this all the time in the summer!

Be-dazzled anything

The last time I be-dazzled something was when I was Columbia in The Rocky Horror Show and I needed my blue shorts to be sparkly!

The shorts in action...

Blue eye shadow

I am not good at putting on make up, so I can't comment on this one. I don't wear blue eye shadow but I am guessing with the right outfit and the right occasion it could work

Victoria Secret Pink

I'm going to have to agree with this one. Pink is for tweens and college girls.

Leopard print

Come on! I think anyone can wear leopard print!

Sparkley pants

That's no fun.

Oversized sunglasses

Like these? They're still cool! Even on an old-ass 30 year old.

Non matching socks

Uh oh. This is me every time I go to the gym.

Hoop earrings

THIS LIST IS CRAP!

Furry boots

Like these?? HAHAHAHA. Dumb and Dumber is my favorite movie. Remember this scene?

Furry anything

It's time I show you this really cool coat I got at Good Will about 15 years ago. I love it.

Tube tops

Should anyone wear these?

Short dresses

Here is my rule. If you are showing leg, cover up on top. If you are baring it all up top, cover your legs. As long as it's not BOTH, I'm all good.

Mini skirts

This is the shortest skirt I own. I haven't worn it in like 3 years. I believe it is time to give it away.

Overalls

Why are these coming back in style? I had an awesome pair with sunflowers on them. This was when I was in eighth grade.

Crop tops

Honest: I really like crop tops paired with high waisted maxi skirts. I do think I am too old to wear that style, unless maybe I am at the beach. But I really like the trend.

American Eagle

S'ok. I never wore this to begin with. Too expensive.

Booty shorts

Helloooooo pink Pumas!!! I don't think this rule should count for runners. I think runners should be able to wear whatever shorts they want!

Old sneakers

This is how my shoes go: running shoes turn into walking around shoes which turn into lifting shoes which turn into mowing the lawn shoes.

I think I ran Boston in these! Now I mow the lawn in them!

Cheap bras

I think whoever wrote this list is under the impression that if you are over the age of 30, you must have boobs that need support. I wear an almost A cup. I get my bras in the little girls section of Target.

Glitter eye shadow

I concur. I do have some though. In case I am ever in a musical again and need it!

Platform flip flops

Weren't these last in style like 15 years ago?

Abercrombie & Fitch

Again, never shopped here.

Scrunchies

Aw, I remember scrunchies! I feel like wearing these around the house or to the gym should be okay.

So my take on this list... Some of the things NO ONE should wear, some things are probably more appropriate for younger women (Victoria's Secret Pink, crop tops), but honestly if you like something, ROCK IT! It doesn't matter how old you are. I think there is a time and a place for everything on this list!

Do you wear anything on this list?
What's your favorite trend right now?
What's the most "young" clothing item you own?

  1. I am 43 and still have my navel ring! I also don't have big enough girls to justify the expense of most bras so I am all about the inexpensive (but quality IMO) ones that I get at the Hanes outlet store. I think some of this list is good advice for anyone to avoid (tube tops, overalls) but some is just whatever your body and attitude can pull off!

    1. Body and attitude- for SURE. When we were in Vegas there were a lot of girls wearing things where I was thinking, "Seriously!?" But then when I thought more about it, there is a time/place/event for every outfit, and if there is any city in which it is okay to be scantily clad, I would say it is Vegas!

I didn't know you had a belly ring!

  2. I think I'm with you, that is not a great list. If you follow that then there will barely be anything to wear at all.

Mind you furry boots are something I'd have little problem not seeing anyone ever wear again ;-)

Congrats on reaching 33. As they say you are as young as you feel so that 21st is still to come!

Definitely still wear graphic t-shirts. My wife is nearly 40 and still does and looks as great as ever. I'm in my early 40s, wear funny t-shirts and always get compliments.

    1. Guys can definitely get away with funny t-shirts I think! I have seen some really good ones lately.

I'm glad your wife still rocks the graphic tees!

  3. I hate lists like this! I feel like if you can pull it off, then go for it! Although I don't think anyone looks good in blue eye-shadow.

My mom once told me aging is weird because you always FEEL 20 but you look older. I think I feel my age, but I'm not out of my 20s yet, so maybe that will change lol!

    1. It makes you wonder what IS age really, you know? Just an arbitrary number, but we are judged so much on it.

  4. I don't think I knew you had a belly ring? I used to have one and I took it out in 2008 because you could see the little bump through a bridesmaid dress I had to wear and then I never did put it back! :( I liked it though.

I LOVE graphic tees!!! I am 33 and I still wear them daily!

I own a tank that says "I hate running," from PINK...lol.

    1. Yes but that tank is AWESOME!!

I got my ring when I was 22. I didn't change it until a little over a year ago because I had to get an MRI. Isn't that silly? Now I just have a dumb little fake diamond in it. I like it!

    2. Okay then I will make note to never take it out unless my plan is to have it out forever!

  5. I love the fact that you buy your bras from the little girls section. I thought I was the only one! And I'm THIRTY SEVEN! And have birthed and breastfed FOUR BABIES. Yeah. So there. I can wear whatever the hell I want. 😜💃

    1. They are cheaper, right!? That is why I do it. And plus they are less likely to have frills, lace, etc. I like something very simple and smooth so that I don't see it under my shirts.

  6. "not 20 dumb but young" <---- haha I love this!

Your husband makes me laugh. :) Hang on to him!

  7. Ugh, I hate lists like this for all the obvious reasons! Bleh!

I'll agree on the tube tops just because I don't like them but otherwise... you do you and I'll do me!

    1. Oh, I was at Target the other say and totally saw that cool denim-ish shirt you got that you featured on one of your vlogs. :)

  8. I promise you, I won't be posting an "I'm 53" post in September. I don't need any reminders! I feel like I'm still 33! It's really a state of mind. But I do avoid tube tops.

    1. It looks like the general consensus is NO to tube tops!

  9. I wear what makes me happy. That being said, I am a boring dresser. I do like retro sneakers :) I wear big sunglasses all the time. The youngest thing I own are my pj pants from the Gap --funky print w patches--they are so old they are retro. I wear graphic T's--my husband's. I steal them all the time. My favorite right now is his "Smuttynose IPA shirt" There are 2 old guys in lawn chairs drinking a beer in front of an RV. I tell my huband it reminds me of him and his buddies... ;)

    1. Haha that sounds like a fun shirt! Your pj pants sound really cute. I love fun pj pants!

  10. OMG this list is awesome! I'm 32. I pretty much agree with everything you said. Except I do sometimes shop at American Eagle, haha! Only for one thing though - I have trouble finding pants that fit and don't make me look like I'm trying to be a 50 year old woman, and they have this one pair of pants that fits well. But I also just discovered the Old Navy pixie pant, so my American Eagle days might be over. LOL!

    1. Wow what is the pixie pant? I know how important it is to find pants that aren't for 16 yr olds yet aren't for 50 yr olds. For me, that's the Candies brand at Kohl's. That brand of pants fits me really well! I don't think I ever wore AE pants. NOTHING at Old Navy ever fits me! I don't know why!

  11. Okay, I just turned 50 and have a belly button ring... I also got my nose pierced about 4 or so years ago and most times I wear a hoop and not just a stud. I wear jean mini skirts, short shorts (not necessarily booty shorts but cannot say I know what the difference is). I refuse to conform to what some in society may feel is appropriate for me. I don't wear belly shirts but I wear bikinis. I say do what you want as long as you want!

    1. I am sure you rock it in all of those clothes! I love nose rings, I wish I could pull one off. I know you do. :)

Booty shorts... I guess they are like THE shortest shorts??

  12. Happy Happy Birthday, Megan! Hope you had awesome day and wore whatever you wanted. :)

Some of the items on this list I agree with, while others I do not. Sadly, I had to remove my belly button bling when I got pregnant and now it looks like a horrible mess. It will be interesting to see what it looks like once my stomach bounces back to normal - if that ever happens.

Along with age, for some reason I think becoming a mom might change some of my style.fashion interests. The more pregnant I get, the less I care. I wonder if that happens with age as well. :)

I will always wear hoops earrings and graphic tees. Sorry, but not sorry. Isn't Abercrombie & Fitch for those who are in Junior High?

    1. lol I have no clue, I don't think I could ever afford A&F anyway... and now that I am a grown ass woman, I would rather shop for clothes at Kohls with a 30% coupon and get ten times the amount of stuff I could get for the same price and A&F!

I only really see you in workout clothes, but my guess is that your fashion style is very fun yet fitting for however old you are. I am sure it will still work now that you're a mom! :)

  13. Overalls, scrunchies, platform flip-flops... I feel like this article should've been called "Things You Shouldn't Wear When It's Not 1995." But I totally get not wearing certain things once you're over 30. Last week I donated a bunch of clothes that were still in good shape, but that I just don't feel comfortable wearing now. I also bought sensible shoes for back to school. Being old is lame. :)

    1. Hahahaha you are right re: "Things you shouldn't wear when it's not 1995"!! I remember wearing ALL of those things... IN MIDDLE SCHOOL!

I too got my new comfy shoes for school. I don't blame being old, I blame being a runner and needing to take care of our tootsies!
