Hell no, not gonna run in that!
Most people I work with know I run in the mornings. Some days, when the weather is pretty terrible, at least one or two of my co-workers ask, "Do you run in this!?"
The answer varies!
Let me fill you in on what sorts of weather I will/will not run in.
I will NOT run in:
Lightening. I don't even like being INSIDE when there is lightening, let alone outside!
Ice/sleet/freezing rain/slippy snow. In short, I don't want to fall and I will not risk it!
Wind advisories with gusts over 20mph. This includes tornado warnings. I know, that sound obvious, but runners are crazy so I feel the need to clarify!
I WILL run in:
Freezing bitter cold temps. I have really warm clothes.
Rain. I can suck it up for a 45 minute run.
Extremely hot conditions. I take precautions, but I'll do it.
Note: Just because I WILL run in less than favorable conditions doesn't mean I ALWAYS do. There are some days I just don't feel like braving the cold or weathering the rain. If I don't feel like it, I don't do it. I'll stay inside and lift that day!
A note on winter planning: I look at the weather for the week ahead and plan my lifting days for the two coldest mornings of the week.
Did I miss something?
What will you/won't you run in?
I won't run when it's lightning out or when it's raining super hard. I hate running in the rain in general. I also won't run outside if it's below 50 degrees because I don't have any of the right clothing to stay warm in that. I also won't run during the middle of the day if the "feels like" temp is over 100 degrees.
ReplyDeleteI will run in the evening or at night when the "feels like" temp is over 100, I just can't have the sun directly beating down on me in that heat. It just totally drains me.
I also will run if wind gusts are up to 30mph. It's definitely not easy to run when the gusts are in the 20s, but during the fall/early winter here it's common for it to be super windy at the beach and I usually just deal with it. The worst part is honestly when the sand is whipping against your skin - it feels like tiny needles pricking you all over!
The reason I am worried about wind is because there are a lot of big, old trees in my neighborhood and I'm scared a branch will hit me. So it's more about that rather than the difficulty of running in the wind. I think if the feels like temp was over 100 I would prob run inside! But I can remember a *couple* times I just really felt like running, so I did small loops around my house and went inside every 15 min or so to cool off. It was time consuming but I really wanted to run that day!
DeleteI've ran in under a tornado warning but in my defense I did not know there was one in effect at the time. It was actually one of the best runs I had at the time..haha
ReplyDeleteSee, I told you there are crazy runners out there. ;) Don't you have a tornado alert on your phone? I do! I am terrified of tornadoes.
DeleteLightning is a no go for me, but for pretty much every other weather condition I would race it in, or join a friend. I have bailed on my friends a couple times recently in less than favorable weather though (so lame of me!). But for my own solo running, if I don't like the looks of the outside, I am hitting up the treadmill! Dark mornings, rain, wind, icy, too cold - yep, it's my TV watching time instead :)
ReplyDeleteYes you have that nice gym downstairs now! :) Do you have a favorite show to watch on your TM?
DeleteI completely agree with your list of will/wont except I won't run in heat. I also won't run when the air quality is bad (something we only deal with when we get summer fires in the mountains!).
ReplyDeleteAir quality is definitely something I never had to deal with, but I'm with you, I feel like running with bad air quality would be counter productive.
DeleteI really admire that you will run in the rain, and in the morning. I can't run in the rain if the temps are below 72. I am afraid of getting too cold.
ReplyDeleteI'm more of a lazy runner, when I'm not training for anything, if I don't feel like running, I just won't.
I only run in the rain if I feel like it. If I don't wanna, I don't.
