Thinking Out Loud!

Thinking-Out-Loud

Thank you, Amanda @ Running with Spoons for hosting Thursday’s very popular Thinking Out Loud series. Let’s get started, shall we?

1.    I need to start making a check list when I pack my gym bag. On Monday, I forgot a towel. I had to use my sweatshirt to dry off after my shower. That just made me feel “off” the rest of the day. On Wednesday, I forgot a SHIRT to wear to work! I ended up having to wear my black leggings with a “too short to cover my bum” dry tech shirt. Thankfully, I had a long black sweater I was able to wear over top, otherwise I would have had to wear my coat all day long.

Other random things I have forgotten to pack in my gym bag: underwear, socks, bra, make up… (thankfully not all on the same day!)

I made it work!
Forgive my "deer in the headlights" look. I believe I had just told Paul,
"Take my picture quick before my piano student arrives!!"

Did you ever forget to pack something semi important to take with you to the gym?

2.    I have committed to working on my bum. I haven’t been able to do any lower body strength training since before my knee surgery on January 31st . I could probably start back up again now, but I am still taking it easy on my knee so I can attempt Boston. So how is a gal to work on her glutes without putting pressure on her poor little knee?

I started with these, which I am sure you have seen before.

This move reminds me of when I used to do Tae Bo!

Then I added these, which are killer.
(Again, nothing new! I just forgot how tough they are!)

You have to make sure your leg is back far enough
or you don't feel it in your glutes as much.

And this is something I learned in PT:

You'll have to Google it to see how to twist the band just so.

What are your favorite glute exercises that don’t require putting pressure on your knees?

3.    I finally started jump roping again! This is HUGE! The last time I jumped rope was probably December! I don’t know if you know this, but jumping rope is one of my favorite HIIT exercises!

Are you a fan of the jump rope?

4. One final thought for today. Actually, it's a question. Is it time to delete Dr. Phil from my DVR? Tuesday's episode had this description: "Gary says he is part human and part dog and tries to live as much of his life as possible as a canine." Yes, I watched it. Yes, it was horrible. He also featured a woman who tried to breast feed her rabbit.

What do you think? Should I give up on Dr. Phil?

  1. First of all, I love that you're wearing two different coloured socks, and that one of them is turquoise <3 Second, jumping rope may seriously be one of my favourite HIIT exercises ever -- I actually can't believe I used to do so much of it for "fun" as a kid lol. Third, I gave up on Dr. Phil years and years ago. I'm sure I liked him at some point, but he's just gotten super strange and annoying over time... and that show you mentioned sounds all kinds of creepy...

  2. Whoa! Those band exercises look complicated. I have powerbands that are small thick bands that go around your ankles to do exercises pretty similar looking to the ones you do. I find those are the best glute exercises, actually all over exercises I use the most. I also do the suzanne summers (clamshell) things, which are great! Haha love the comment about Dr Phill!

    1. Ooh I did the clam shells at PT. They are hard too!

  3. I love jumping rope! Honestly, when I started doing it a few months ago I was shocked at how difficult it can be. I don't remember it being that hard at all as a kid!

A woman who tried to breastfeed her rabbit? That is just sad. I would give up on Dr. Phil. It sounds like he's just exploiting people with mental illnesses for ratings!

    1. Yup, you're right. I should not be watching such trash!

  4. I'm doing a lot of those same types of exercises too! I used to watch Dr. Phil back when he had the dr. Phil family on when that teenager Alex was having a baby. Remember them? They were on for years. I've stopped watching it since though.

  5. I once forgot my cleats on a road trip to a soccer game back in high school. Thank goodness I have giant feet, I'm only half a size smaller than my male coach so I wore his for the game!

    1. Whew that would have stinked! Who knew there were so many perks to having big feet??

  6. LOL...Dr. Phil=Delete! I am always laughing at something on your posts! I know I've told you, but I really enjoy your blog.

I once forgot my sports bra in my gym bag and had to work out in a regular bra, you know with the straps showing on the sides of my racer back tank.....classy right?

    1. Thanks Heather :) Ewww normal bra at the gym would FEEL gross to me. I just hate bras in general. Let's burn 'em!!!

  7. I have forgotten my sports bra in my bag a few times, which always leads to me wearing my regular bra to workout. I hate when this happens. It always throws me off. I also have forgotten my towel, but that just results in me not showering and being a hot, sweaty mess for the rest of the day. I'm pretty socially appropriate....

    1. Eek I gotta shower! Even after work I shower. So I shower twice a day. That seems like it's excessive but as a fellow teacher, you know how sweaty we can get!

  8. I always forgot random things in my gym bag- the flip flops for the shower, my socks, underwear etc...And oh Dr. Phil - I always liked him since he came from Oprah but that is one bizarre topic for him to be discussing. Surprises me.

    1. His show has turned into a circus! It used to be so much better.

  9. I have recently become obsessed with Dr. Phil again, I think that episode was a one-off (I agree, it was so weird). Today he was back to fixing hopeless marriages, so I think you're probably safe in keeping it on the PVR a little longer.

  10. I live a whopping 1.2 miles from the gym, and my house is between it and work, so luckily I never have to pack a gym bag...I just run home. But I would definitely do something like your stories if that wasn't the case!

    1. Ooh that is so nice! I have to shower at the gym or get up like 20 minutes earlier. Of course I pick sleep. :)

  11. Haha I've never watched Dr Phil (UK) but those topics are so hilarious I would be tempted to start, for comedy purposes!

I hate forgetting a vital part of gym wear! hairties are a common one (and elastic bands do not make great subs!)

    1. He honestly used to be less of a circus. I think he's been on for too long.

I have forgotten about jump rope! I should totally buy one and get back into it! Ahhhhh...thanks :)
