Hi, my name's Megan and I am weird!

As many of you probably know, I suffer from misophonia!

It seems like everyone suffers from misophonia to some extent. I know I'm much more sensitive to mouth, nose, and throat noises than Paul is. But on the other hand, he still doesn't want to sit next to me while I crunch on an apple!

My misophonia is more prominent if the person making the mouth noise is close to me. Unfortunately, Paul is never going to be able to chew gum in my presence. I CANNOT TAKE IT.

Most of the time, I shudder when someone near me gets out a piece of gum. But I'm going to tell you something pretty strange... I have a couple friends or acquaintances who I actually LIKE hearing chew gum. I know, it is absolutely crazy. But there is a tiny handful of people who when they chew gum, I freaking love it.

I know, I am so weird.

No, I won't tell you who these people are. I can't think of a creepier thing to tell someone!

Do you have misophonia?
What if I told you I liked the sound of you chewing gum?

  1. I can handle the mouth noises as long as there are other loud noises in the room. Like Adam and I can eat next to each other on the couch if the TV is on. However, if the TV isn't on or it's on low we get so angry at each other!

    1. YES! Paul and I eat dinner together in front of the TV and all is good. But we can't do it if just one of us is eating.

  2. I don't think I have misphonia but when I can hear someone through a wall but can't make out specific words it drives me CRAZY. Like, I fly into a rage and want to punch things. It's why I don't do apartments - hearing a TV murmur through a wall like the teacher in Peanuts is my BIGGEST annoyance.

    1. Ooh how interesting! I wonder if there is a name for that?

  3. Honestly, I think gum is disgusting and I don't "get" why people Want to slop something around in their mouth. They should just eat a mint. Of course I've only felt this way since I've been older. I'm sure when I was younger I loved "smacking" gum like everyone else!

    1. Oh yeah kids freaking love to smack gum! Sometimes a piano student comes to a lesson with gum and I am like... omg I should get paid double for this haha.

  4. I have never heard of this. It's a good thing kids aren't allow to have gum your school! (that's true, right?) I guess we would not be allowed to hang out together for several hours of the day because chewing gum is a post lunch habit for me. When I travel I make certain I have lip balm and a pack of gum! I love how it freshens my mouth after a meal.
Don't your students make all sorts of annoying sounds? I know my kids do!

    1. You are right, they are NOT allowed to have gum at school but toward the end of the school year, the 3rd and 4th graders try to sneak it and I BUST them every time. I write them up for it because 1. They're not allowed to have it at school, and 2. Even if they were allowed to have it, I wouldn't permit it in my music room. Kids DO make DISGUSTING sniffing noises and I order them to get a tissue because I CAN'T STAND IT. Now, if you chewed gum near me, it most likely would not bother me because we are not "close", you know what I mean? This sounds weird, but I can just kind of look at someone and be able to tell you whether them chewing gum would gross me out or not. I do not think you would gross me out. I mean, unless you were an obnoxious chewer. But if you were just "normal" it wouldn't bother me. That's only a guess though!

  5. If you told me you liked me chewing gum I would be over the moon because I chew gum a lot. More than I would like but I am not ready to give it up yet!

    1. Well I never heard you chew gum before. You could send me a snap of you chewing gum and I could give you the verdict- bwahahaha!

    2. It's funny though, because I have gum in my mouth a lot but I am not actually chewing it. It's just there in case I want to chomp a bit but most times I am not...that makes me weird, huh?

    3. Okay, having a wad of gum just chilling in my mouth sounds so gross to me! But there must be something to it because I bet a lot of people do that!

    4. LOL--it is the minty flavor without being a mint (which I try and I end up chewing it so it's gone before I know it)

  6. I don't like hearing it but it isn't a phobia for me...yet. There's still time. Okay, so this makes me think of something... so over the years, when I've either had my hair cut at the salon or just had different people play with my hair over the years, there are certain people that give me that fuzzy feeling in my tummy, that euphoric feeling in my head, tingling up my spine, when they touch my hair, and other people do not. And there's no rhyme or reason, either. I've always been curious as to why this happens and wondered if anyone else experiences this too!

    1. Well I definitely LOVE when people play with my hair, cut it, wash it, whatever, but I pretty much like when anyone does it. Well, anyone who is supposed to, anyway. I never heard of your specific quirk though!

  7. I can handle normal, mouth closed chewing, but any sort of snoring or throat clearing sound is nails on a chalkboard to me. I'll nudge my husband to roll over if he breathes to loudly at night. I can't stand it!

    1. My husband snores and does lots of weird things when he sleeps. Breathing loudly is one of them. I have since decided breathing loudly = snoring so I wake him up if he does it (as I do when he snores) so that he can roll on his side and thus, stop snoring/breathing loud. I fear there will be a time when that doesn't work and we need to sleep in separate rooms.

    2. When my husband was sick/congested his breathing was so obnoxious to me that I ended up sleeping on the couch. Which I thought was at least a better solution than "Please stop breathing it is keeping me awake." I'm glad it was only a temporary issue though, separate rooms doesn't seem like a great long term plan.

    3. I know it doesn't. We aren't cuddlers and keep to our separate sides of the bed, but there is still that closeness and connectedness you feel sleeping in the same bad, even if your arms aren't wrapped around each other!

  8. I'm fine with a lot of things, but I can't take it when people are clearing their throat a lot. Either get a cough drop or drink some water. I try to be really quiet when I have a cold because I know it would drive me nuts.

    1. Oh yeah throat noises are no fun. It seems like old men do that most often. Although the solar city guy that came to our house on Sunday was doing it hardcore and he was young!
