Diagnose Me!

Okay, this is one of those random posts I am famous for writing. You all know I write about my life and other random shit just as much IF NOT MORE than I write about running sometimes. That's what happens when you blog every day. I could never, ever, EVER write about running and fitness everyday... which is why I write random posts like this one! Oh well! Enjoy! Or skip!

I am wondering if you can figure out what is wrong with me. I am obsessed with death and murder cases.Related Posts Plugin for WordPress, Blogger...

Should I find it alarming that whenever one of my friends sees an article about Jodi Arias or JonBenet, they send it my way? Should I think it's weird that my heart is sincerely touched that I am the first person they think of when they see any new information about these cases?

Note: I do not like gory horror movies or slasher films. I do not enjoy people getting hurt or murdered. I like learning about the investigation and litigation aspects!

When did my obsession begin? I'd have to say college. I remember watching Forensic Files in my dorm room. That is also when I discovered Court TV and I started watching various criminal trials.

I love reading books about high profile murder cases. I love watching trials on Youtube. I have seen the Jodi Arias full trial twice and highlights from it twice. I even have a "favorite" Jodi Arias interview I watch over and over again while I'm doing puzzles. I also like watching her interrogation videos.

Before you think I am sick, I must stress: It's not that I love "murders", it's the I love learning about the investigation, the law, and how both prosecutors and defense attorneys go about litigating a trial.

When we went to Boulder this past summer, we drove by the Ramsey house. I would have paid money to go inside and take a tour.

I give Paul tips on what to do if I am ever murdered. First, I told him that as the husband, he would be the first suspect the police would look at. I told him to take a polygraph right away so police could rule him out and focus their investigation resources elsewhere.

When we go on vacation, I always like to research what kinds of deaths and accidents happen. When we went to San Francisco, I wanted to learn about how many people commit suicide by jumping off the Golden Gate Bridge. When we went to the Grand Canyon, I wanted to learn about all the people that died there and what went wrong. When we went to Rocky Mountain National Park, I wanted to learn about the deaths and accidents there as well.

You probably already knew I like learning about murder investigations, but I realize you this post makes me sound bat shit crazy! I swear I am not! But I still ask you in a good natured way... What the hell do you think is wrong with me!!??
What do you think is wrong with me?
Is there a high profile crime you find particularly interesting?
Any unsolved cases that you think you have cracked?

  1. My cousin is obsessed with missing persons cases and the Brittanee Drexel case here in SC (she was a teen girl who ran away to Myrtle Beach and went missing about 5-6 years ago). He followed it from the beginning, still follows it today (even when it's not in the news) and participated in several searches and poster/flyer hanging campaigns. They actually have a ton of volunteers who do that stuff so you're definitely not the only one out there who is a bit obsessed with crime cases!

    1. I never heard of that case! Hmm I have never thought about volunteering for things like that but it would be a good way to give back. I am however volunteering for the Hillary campaign in a few weeks by helping out with voter registration.

    2. Honestly, if you're really into it, I say volunteer for things like missing persons searches. You'd probably learn a lot about the forensic side and the criminal side by volunteering and it would be a good way to give back (but voter registration drives are too!!)

  2. I do not like horror or slasher films either but I Love Dateline mystery and 48 Hours! I was obsessed with the Natalie Halloway case and would love to hear your thoughts on that someday. I don't think there is anything wrong with you. I think it's human nature to be interested. Now I'm curious to hear the info you found out about all your vacation spots. Please share! (maybe that's another random blog post)

    1. For some reason I didn't get into the Natalie Halloway case! I mean, I know I watched coverage of it on Nancy Grace because I used to watch NG A LOT. I think it was pretty cut and dry that the Van Der Sloot (sp??) guy did something to her? I am not sure.

Okay, well people kill themselves by jumping off the Golden Gate Bridge all the time. You pretty much die from hitting the water. A TINY fraction of people live to tell the tale and that's only because they hit the water at a precise angle.

Most deaths at the Grand Canyon are from falls. Lots of people die from dehydration while hiking in the canyon. Most of those deaths could have been avoided by being more prepared by either bringing more water with them or not veering off trails and getting lost.

Lots of people fall at RMNP park too. Crazy fact: Paul and I went on a 7 mile hike and I carried a mtn lion stick with me the whole time because there were warning signs on the trail about the lions. Paul thought I was crazy, but then I read in the book an 8 yr old had been killed ON THAT EXACT TRAIL about 10 yrs ago. I am so glad I didn't read that until after our hike or else I know I would have been to scared to hike there!

  3. I think it's normal to be curious about murder mysteries! When I read about that JonBenet docuseries I texted you about, I also mentioned it to a couple of coworkers and we talked about the case for like 30 minutes straight even though none of us are into murder mysteries like you are. I wish you had been there because we had to Google a lot of things!

Hey, since you're not able to go to work right now, how about you come down and intern at my office so we can all talk about the JonBenet case? We need an expert to answer our questions! :)

I want to learn more about the JonBenet case and other murder mysteries but I am too scared! I know that if I started researching them I would never again sleep at night, I would be scared to go running alone in the dark, etc. I've had a fear of being murdered since I was like 5, so I just can't feed that weird fear!

    1. OMG girl I wish I had been there. I know the case inside out... not to brag. Okay, I will brag!!! If you have any questions, let me know. :) Unfortunately/fortunately I am back at work today so I cannot come down and intern, but maybe next summer I could??? ;)

  4. You had me until the info about your vacation sleuthing! LOL! What I'm wondering is why you did not pursue this interest as a career choice? Sounds like it would be the ideal job for you!

    1. HAHA!So basically you're saying you didn't think I was weird until the vacation stuff? ;) I don't know why I did not pursue this! Probably because I wasn't super "into" it until college, and by then I was smart enough to know forensic and detective work is not as flashy as it seems on TV and it's probably very monotonous. More interesting to just learn about things on my own!

  5. I do not think there is anything wrong with you! We all have our own passions and obsessions. I would say there is more things wrong with somembody who is not passionate about something.

I'm curious now... is your interest more on True crime, rather than on cop shows or crime shows? Did you watch that show everybody was talking about on Netflix a few months back? I forgot what it's called.

My sister who works for a lawyer, recently was working with a local semi-high profile case and she knew all the ins and outs about interrogations, things found at the scene and small details... after the trial was over, we had a long phone conversation about everything that she learned that wasn't in the news. It was really interesting!

    1. Yes, I am way more into TRUE crime. And I could NOT get into Making A Murder- that's the show you're talking about. The only reason I can think of for me not getting into it is that I watch and read about stuff like that all the time, so it wasn't like a new and interesting thing to me.

Wow I bet it was so cool to talk to your sister about that kind of stuff!!

  6. I think it is great you have a passion for finding the truth! You know what I think you should use that passion for and the crime I would love for you to solve! Can you imagine if you did?

    1. Yes I absolutely know what you are talking about! I don't think I will be solving anything, but I do like to read about the people investigating and solving. I did watch some youtube docs on what you're talking about.

  7. Nothing wrong with you! I'm fascinated by the Jack the Ripper case, and my parents signed us up for a Ripper tour the first time we were in London, just for me. It's one of those amazing cases that started and ended so abruptly, and was so violent, and they've never solved it. There are theories, but no concrete solutions.

    1. I read a few books on that case! I would totally take that tour if I was in London. Did you like the tour? Did you learn anything new? Or was it just sort of surreal seeing exactly where everything happened?

    2. I didn't learn anything new about the case, but we did get a little history on the Whitechapel area.

  8. If you were batshit crazy then you wouldn't have typed that sentence out because people who are legitimately unstable are unaware of their mental fragility. Anyway. I still think it's weird that you care about murder cases LOL. Totally kidding. You're a thinker/analyzer and it's exciting! Makes sense to me!

    1. You know what, one time you commented on one of my posts- I think it was that really long Survivor one, and you said something like, "I love how when you love something you LOVE IT." When I read that comment I was like- WOW, Suzy GETS me.

  9. I am kind of obsessed with murder cases too so, if there is something wrong with you then there is something wrong with me too. I actually downloaded and read an e-book on the Lululemon murder case once. I felt like kind of a weirdo but it wasn't a gore thing at all - like you, I don't like violence or gory stuff, it's the cerebral aspect that's so appealing to me. It's why I watch more Law and Order and Medium and Murder She Wrote than any human should watch - it's a fascinating glimpse into the human psyche, the solving of the mystery is like putting together a big puzzle. I think it's more the crime-solving and psychology that interests us, not the death and gore, and we shouldn't apologize for that. I mean, maybe if more people were interested in this stuff, fewer crimes would go unsolved right??

    2. I once thought of that Wendy. I think Meg would enjoy doing something Forensics related. I could see her being a blood splatter expert. Kinda like Dexter, minus the serial killing on the side :)

  11. I have the same morbid curiosity. I think most people do, but some outgrow it. I think about my students, for example, who are obsessed with learning about serial killers and the Holocaust. When I was in 8th grade, I remember being similarly interested! But I think most adults outgrow it or just hide it.

But I love reading about serial killers, shocking or gory murders, etc. So whatever's wrong with you, I have it too!

    1. Okay this is going to sound weird but do you have a "favorite" serial killer to learn about?

  12. Omg it is weird it helps me chill out. Like a Jodi Arias interrogation = relaxing puzzle background noise lol. I remember you like your Datelines!

  13. I am right there with you. I watched everyday of the Casey Anthony trial. Also, have you ever seen the movie The Bridge (about Golden Gate Bridge suicides)? It is fascinating but also depressing.

    1. NICE! Casey Anthony makes me so freaking mad. I did not see The Bridge. I will look for it, thanks for the rec! I don't think I am in the right head space to watch it now but I'll get back to the point where I can watch depressing movies about people who want to kill themselves.

  14. One of my best friends is the same way - she is obsessed with mysteries and crimes. We have girls nights where we will pour a large glass of wine and watch Dateline (her favorite show).

I think you are just a person who likes to solve things and understand things at a deeper level. Hence your fascination with puzzles, and reality TV that involves game play and strategy (Survivor, Big Brother).
