5 Health & Fitness Buzzwords/Phrases that ANNOY ME!

Related Posts Plugin for WordPress, Blogger...

I consider myself a positive person, but we all love to complain now and then! Here are 5 Health & Fitness Buzzwords/Phrases that annoy the crap out of me.

1. Clean eating. What the hell is clean eating? And why do people who say they "eat clean" sound so pretentious?

2. Gluten Free. When things are labeled gluten free, it bugs me because there are soooooo many people that eat gluten free that don't actually need to. Why do I care how other people eat? I shouldn't. This is a flaw I have that I am working on!

3. "I don't eat sugar." YES YOU DO! A better thing to say is, "I don't eat added sugar." Anyway, your body needs sugar. I hate that many people think it's the absolute enemy.

Funny story: I was once on a run and at one of the crew stops, a runner offered me a banana cookie they made using only bananas and oats. "These cookies have zero sugar in them and they taste soooo naughty!" she cooed. I looked her straight in the face and said, "They are made with bananas. There's a ton of sugar in them."

4. Toned. My best guess is that to get "toned" you must lose fat and build muscle. But some women are scared of "building muscle" because they think it means they will get huge and bulky. It's really hard for women to get huge and bulky and pretty much have to eat like it's their JOB to do so. Eat healthy and lift the heaviest weight you are able, and you will be on your way to looking "toned"- aka you will be losing fat and gaining muscle.

5. Using the word "core" instead of "abs". Your actual core involves more muscles than just your abs. Think hip flexors, erector spinae, and your glutes as well! I know this is a dumb one, but it makes me cringe a little. I have been guilty of saying it from time to time. I'm trying to change that.

Tell me, are there any health and fitness buzzwords that annoy you?
Are there any words I use that annoy you? Be honest!! I CAN TAKE IT!!!

  1. I definitely get annoyed with the clean eating one! Especially when I KNOW that person definitely doesn't all the time, lol. I "liked" a clean eating page on facebook once for a recipe and they get super intense on what exactly "clean eating" means. One lady posted a pasta recipe and another lady lost it!

Here's my annoying word: Tabata. For the longest time I had no idea what it even meant! LOL, so I think that's why it annoys me to this day.

I learned the real meaning of core once I got injured last winter. Now I totally know there are so many more parts than just abs!

    1. "One lady posted a pasta recipe and another lady lost it! " <---- That made me laugh sooooo hard!!! I think pasta IS healthy! Or isn't it?

Tabata was such a huge buzzword a couple years ago! I think when something gets really big, it is bound to annoy us. I tried tabata once and I realized it's just HIIT with a specified work/rest time. And then I was like, why not just call it HIIT???

  2. OHHHHHMYYYYGODDDD MEGGGGG the gluten free semen meme KILLED ME. I DIE. SO FUNNY. I love you even more, if that was even possible.

  3. Oh yes it drives me crazy when people think that gluten free="healthy" or that its better for you or something. Especially when something is advertised as gluten free and Im like is there ever gluten in there to begin with? And the clean eating one too, however I get that it can sometimes be tough to find perfectly appropriate terms to describe what we are trying to say. Even the word healthy can have so many meanings and interpretations.

    1. Oh my gosh, ask Paul. I totally flip my shit when something that is naturally gluten free brags that it is gluten free!

That is a good point you made that sometimes it is hard to use exactly the right word to say, and as long as you get your point across, is it that big of a deal? Probably not. :)

  4. LOL--this is so funny! I think the one that gets me is when people stay away from bananas because they have so much sugar. It's fruit, people. All fruit has sugar. They act like eating a banana will make you fat. Really!? Cuz some days I eat 3. Truth. I am gonna branch out into non fitness words that drive me crazy: hubby or the hubs and preggars. I want to scream when people use these words. Ugh!!!!

    1. Wow bananas are sooooo good for athletes! And on athletes. I can't imagine being afraid fruit will make me fat. It's funny because even though bananas have a lot of sugar, they can hold me over for awhile, unlike and apple. You would think with all the fiber in an apple it would be a better snack for me but nope, I'll be hungry in a half hour.

Uh oh I use hubby! I know why I do it- my mom does it! I think preggars is GROSS though lol.

  5. I use core instead of abs when I literally mean core. But I always feel like I need to clarify because people will think I just mean abs! So then I end up saying "I'm working on strengthening my core - abs, glutes, hips, back..." and it gets so wordy!

I hate when people say clean eating, too. And I hate "detoxes". Your kidneys and liver detox you just FINE, you don't need to "detox" your own body. Actually, "toxins" and "chemicals" can be added to this list, too! Pretty much any pseudoscience woo word is going to get me worked up!

    1. Your first point is similar to the one Lisa said. Sometimes it's easier to just say a term so that most people get what you say.

Don't get me started on detoxes. I feel so bad for people who detox and cleanse. But then again, I know people that use the term "cleanse" to me just eating really ridiculously healthy for 2-3 days (think meat, veggies, potatoes, etc) to just kind of cleanse their palate and get them back on track. It's not that they're eating less calories or something like that. So I guess I kind of understand if someone wants to do that. Again, certain words have many connotations.

But yeah, the typical detoxes like juicing or lemongrassbuckwheat whatever is ridic. :)

    2. I feel bad for people who buy into these detox programs because they are expensive!!!!

Like, please pay me $50 to blend an apple and orange together for you. Happy to do it to help you detoxify your body and get rid of free radicals that clog up the fat pockets in your epidermis causing you to not lose weight. Drinking my orange-Apple juice and nothing else will clear you up and help you lose weight ... It's totally not that you're just not eating for a week! PS, don't forget you have to pay me $50 per juice for this to really work!

    3. Money back guarantee that you'll lose weight as long as you don't eat anything!!!!!

  6. The clean eating thing definitely!!! I'm sure there are others. I'll have to think about this. Oh and I hate that gluten free has become such a trend. I bet half the people don't even know what gluten really is or why they need to be gluten free. Don't you find it funny that now all of a sudden we have so many people that "need" to be gluten free????

    1. I do find it funny. But you know what? The good thing is that people with Celiac have all kinds of gluten free products they can eat!

  7. The word TONED is part of my life and I hate it. I have a client in the fitness industry and we have to wayyyyyyyy overuse the word "toned" in everything because this is literally the only word some women seem to respond to. There also seems to be this big misconception that you can get toned without really working out. I know, it sounds ridiculous, but I see so many women ask questions like, "how quickly can I get toned on my diet?" and "can I get toned without going to the gym? i'm very busy" and variations of that.

    O_O

    1. That is interesting to hear what women respond to! I guess I am in the minority where I have no desire to read an article or do a workout that is described using the word "tone".

  8. I love this post!! I agree with all of these, most especially the clean eating one. Whenever someone says that all I can think is "as opposed to what? Dirty eating???" I do use the term "core", but I actually mean more than just abs when I say it, so hopefully I get a pass on that one :-)

My big one, and it seems hypocritical that I hate this because I've used it before, is "fuel". This bugs me and I just can't figure out why. I wish there were a better term because I just hate when people say "I'm FUELING my body" "the right FUEL for my body," etc. No. You're feeding your body. You're eating (or drinking). Machines get fuel, bodies get food. But since "fuel" is more all encompassing and popular with athletes I guess I'll just have to suffer through it

    1. I do go back and forth on the fuel one as well- and I say it too!!! So why do I say it if it borderline bugs me? Hehe.

  9. Love your rant posts! :) Right now I'm a bit irked by "essential oils". Sorry if you, or anyone reading this uses them, and have benefited from them, but I think they are just a fad and based on the information my husband has told me (he REALLY thinks they are a scam), it sounds like a money grab to me. Maybe I just need to sniff some Peppermint essential oil and chill a bit...

    1. Hahahaha maybe you do!? I am not familiar with essential oils because I think my brain just glosses over them as "froo froo" but I could be wrong because clearly I don't know really anything about them. However, one time I had a pounding headache and a colleague had me rub some of her peppermint oil on my temples and it made my headache go away. I am a skeptic by nature, so I don't think it worked because I wanted it to work. I think it either worked or my headache would have gone away by itself.

  10. I definitely agree with you about clean eating. Also, the X-number of day fixes also bother me. Why not just do a permanent fix or no fix at all? Why does any change in one's habits have to be limited to a specific number of days?

    ReplyDelete
  11. Clean eating is definitely mine. Is some food dirty? Should I be washing it more?

I don't mind food being labeled gluten free, but I know two people with Celiac Disease and it's really really important that they not have gluten. One is a child, and she ends up in the hospital for days if she gets glutened. The other is a friend in CO who will be down and out for a few days. What I really hate is the fad that people believe they are "gluten intolerant" or some such bullshit. If you don't have celiac disease, you can eat gluten. Stop listening to internet bullshit.

I hate the word "Paleo." I think it's stupid. I think naming your diet with a catchphrase so you don't have to actually say "I'm on a diet" is stupid. Saying "I'm paleo" like it's NOT a diet makes you sound like a freaking moron.

    ReplyDelete

    1. Those with Celiac DEFINITELY make out with the whole gluten free fad thing because of all the labeling. And of course there now being way more gluten free options than there used to be.

Paleo is another annoying one! I forgot about that. and I think a lot of people who "are paleo" get pretty sanctimonious about it! Obviously not everyone. But it's one of those fad diets that people LOVE to tell you they're apart of. As if we care. I really don't think people care how I eat.

  12. Nah I don't think you are guilty. I use my glutes when I plank, so that counts!

Some people are smug about their diets!

  13. Clean eating for sure. So if you aren't clean eating, does that mean you forgot to wash your produce before eating it? ROFL!!!

    1. Well then I def eat dirty cause I don't always wash it. :(

  14. Eek! And I just did the sugar-free post. ;)
I feel the same way about "toned". I don't like it. I also don't care for bikini body. Put on a bikini. You have a bikini body. End of story.
