Things most runners do that I DON'T.

There are many things I do that most runners do...

- I get mad if you call me a “jogger”.
- I poop a lot.
- I get hugely pissed when my Garmin can’t locate a satellite.

But there are a few things that most runners do that I don’t.

1.   I don't blow snot rockets.

I have never, ever, blown a snot rocket in my life. If I have to blow my nose on a run, I either use TP that I brought along (remember, I poop a lot.) or I do a little wipe on my shirt. That's still gross but not as gross as a snot rocket!

**Fun fact: Someone blew a snot rocket on me during the Philadelphia Marathon. It was a guy in American flag boxers.**

2.   I don't log my miles. (Anymore.)

I’m a pretty anal retentive person, so you’d think I’d log all my miles. Alas, I do not. I used to, but then I lost my password to the website I tracked them on and never started again. This was about 3 years ago.

**Fun fact: I used to log around 2,000 miles a year! I was a whack job.**

3.   I rarely race.

Racing is definitely fun from time to time, but it's EXPENSIVE. I have never been someone to race a lot. Four races per year was probably my “peak”.

**Fun fact: I was still in the bathroom when the Baltimore Marathon started. No worries. Chip timing.**

I'd lay down some cash to run the Honolulu Marathon!

4.   I don't listen to music.

I’ve mentioned this many times, but I rarely listen to music. I listen to NPR pod casts or The Savage Lovecast.

**Fun fact: I did listen to music during the last 6 miles of the Harrisburg Marathon. This was the race I used to qualify for Boston this year. I finished while the Indiana Jones Theme Song blasted into my ears. It was very uplifting and surprisingly not the cheesiest thing I've ever done.**

5.   I don't put race or mileage stickers on the back of my car.

I will never, stick anything on the back of my car. Not a stick family, not even an “I love my cats” sticker. Certainly not a mileage sticker. I do not feel the need to announce to the world my racing accomplishments. That’s what my blog is for, duh!

**Fun fact: If I had to put a sticker on the back of my car, it would say something like, “If you can read this, get off my ass!” I hate when people tailgate.**

Are there any quirks/habits of runners that you do not do?

Have you ever listened to the Savage Lovecast? It is so informative!

What stickers do you have on the back of your car?

    1. LOL.....I have "Runner" that was in a race kit one time, I have the John Hancock Boston 26.2 one and a random 26.2 one from my first ever marathon! (Nerd!)

  3. You are SO funny! I admit i've never done the snot rocket thing. I have racing magnets but have them on my fridge not my car ( not yet anyway) and I log my miles in a training log I got from RW. If I had to do it on the computer I probably wouldn't log them...haha! Have a great weekend!

    1. I forgot they are magnets... why did I think they were stickers? hehe

  4. I don't blow snotrockets either, I'm with you on wiping it with my shirt. I actually think this is probably grosser than a snotrocket, but it's also classier? That's not the word I'm looking for, but you know what I mean.

I have a small 13.1 magnet on the back of my car. I hope that if a robber someday wants to break into my car and sees that sticker he/she will think I'm a badass runner and will simply choose someone else's car to rob.

  5. First, I do not know how you survive running without being a snot rocket-er! I can't imagine not blowing my nose on chilly days. (But I always check my blind spots before i blow).
Personally, I do not fuel during races. I think I'll need to sort this out before I run my first full marathon. But I've tried chews and gus during 10+ mile training runs and during my half marathons and they just make me sick to my stomach. I think I need to find one that isn't so syrup-y, sugar-y sweet.

    1. Could you try some sort of "real" food? Like a banana or peanut butter bread or something? I hate Gu's and chews and stuff. They're gross!

  6. I would have literally thrown up if someone had blown snot on me. Snot/spit are my weakness. Just reading that made me actually gag. It's bad. My boyfriend thinks I'm making it up and pretending to gag, so he will pretend like he's about to hock a loogie. It's the worst thing in the world. Gaaaaah.

I have never fueled during a run. I am wondering if fueling would help me improve times and such, but since I don't consider myself competitive at all, I haven't tried.

  7. Real question: If you don't log miles, how do you know you're on track for training?

I need to listen to Indiana Jones on a run! That sounds amazing!

    1. Dan Savage, Indian Jones- what's the diff!? Hehe. Good question, and the answer is that I haven't followed a formal training plan in years. I barely ever race. But for example, for the last marathon I did (Nov. 2012) I didn't decide to run it until about a month before the race and then I just planned my long runs I was going to do. Now for Boston coming up, I DID make a training plan that I posted but that's because I am clearly not in the position to run whatever/whenever I feel like. I have to be careful.

  8. Oh man that would be so gross if someone blew a snot rocket on me. I always carry kleenex when I run and have it with me when I work out because my nose always seems to be running. Hmm, things I do that most runners don't...I would say run barefoot...but in the sand. :) And you save money on shoes!

  9. This post made me laugh! For my second half marathon they gave out 13.1 stickers instead of medals and I have it in my second bedroom. I was thinking of putting one on my car but I don't want to ruin my car! Maybe in the window? I do like when I see other cars with stickers because I always say "Hey, another runner!"
I HAVE to listen to music when I run solo! I want to try the podcasts - I think they would be fun for further runs! I do not listen to music when I run with friends though!

    1. Yes try some pod casts if you have to do a long solo run when you train for your full. Itunes has so many free ones and you can just zone out.

  10. Hahahaha I love you and your blog more and more every day! Especially after reading that you do NOT have any bumper stickers on your car! Lately I feel like I've been seeing those 26.2 stickers EVERYWHERE and it's a blatant reminder to me that other people have run them and I'm unable to run right now. And with the Indiana Jones music and NPR comments I think you're probably JP's new BFF. LOL.

    1. LOL who knew me and JP had so much in common???!!! I know, when you're injured it seems like EVERYONE is running. NO ONE should be allowed to run when we're injured!! :)

  11. Tracking things makes me feel in control. I generally love lists and tracking... it's so weird I don't track miles! When I first got my Garmin I would plug it into my computer after every run and analyze what happened, but then I stopped and never started again!

  12. All of these except the mileage-tracking one apply to me, too! And I run 2000+ miles/year so apparently I am a crazy person. :)
