Deep Thoughts: Digital Minimalism & Solitude

Related Posts Plugin for WordPress, Blogger...

Hey all! I am linking up with Fairytales and Fitness

I have some DEEP THOUGHTS today!

Remember Jack Handy's deep thoughts!? Omg they were so funny...

Today I'm going to tell you about a great podcast I listen to, and a very specific episode of it.

Ezra Klein, editor-at-large and founder of Vox, puts out a podcast several times a week. Some of them are political, but he interviews people on a host of other topics as well. In fact, I would argue those interviews are the most fascinating episodes. Everything Ezra puts out is topical and current, and there are so many episodes I listen to where I think of someone in my life and think, "Oh my gosh, so and so needs to listen to this!"

~ Digital Minimalism ~

I recently listened to his interview with Cal Newport, who wants us all to become "digital minimalists". Newport defines digital minimalism as "a philosophy of technology use in which you focus your online time on a small number of carefully selected activities that strongly support things you value, and then happily miss out on everything else".

So that got me thinking... am I digital minimalist? I use technology A LOT (podcasts, Duolingo, my blog, reddit, Facebook...) but I value everything I use it for. I think I do need to reevaluate my whole need to blog every day, because I don't think it's working for me anymore!

~ Solitude ~

In the same interview, Newport talks about how since technology is such a huge part of our lives, it is harder for us to experience solitude. Here are two of Newport's lessons solitude:

“Lesson #1: The right way to define “solitude” is as a subjective state in which you’re isolated from input from other minds.
“When we think of solitude, we typically imagine physical isolation (a remote cabin or mountain top), making it a concept that we can easily push aside as romantic and impractical. But as this book makes clear, the real key to solitude is to step away from reacting to the output of other minds: be it listening to a podcast, scanning social media, reading a book, watching TV or holding an actual conversation. It’s time for your mind to be alone with your mind — regardless of what’s going on around you.

“Lesson #2: Regular doses of solitude are crucial for the effective and resilient functioning of your brain.
“Spending time isolated from other minds is what allows you to process and regulate complex emotions. It’s the only time you can refine the principles on which you can build a life of character. It’s what allows you to crack hard problems, and is often necessary for creative insight. If you avoid time alone with your brain your mental life will be much more fragile and much less productive.”

So Newport's definition of solitude shook me. I always equated solitude to "alone time", so I thought I got plenty of solitude and alone time. But whenever I'm alone and doing something that could technically count as solitude (driving, cleaning, shaving my legs, running, etc) I am always listening to  a podcast! So it's very rare to just be alone with my thoughts. Of course, sometimes my thoughts drift during a podcast and I think about other things. But it's definitely not true solitude...

And those are my deep thoughts for today!
HAPPY FRIDAY!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Random!

Hola! I'm writing this on Wednesday night because I just realized I didn't have a post scheduled for tomorrow! So.... I'm just going to share some random things that have been going on lately! This may be short.

1. Celebrity Big Brother has started and I really like it! I also love that it's a show Paul and I can watch together. He's fun to watch reality TV with because we laugh at the same ridiculous things.

2. Tuesday was a big day at work because I got a HAND SANITIZER DISPENSER IN MY ROOM!!!! You are jealous, I know you are.

3. I'm going to try out a new podcast called Ear Hustle. It's hosted by two inmates at San Quintin State Prison. I could learn a lot!

4. A Netflix show called You was recommended to me and I think Paul and I are going to start watching it. I hope we like it! We need a new show!

5. When I got to work on Wednesday, our secretary (who is my friend) asked me if I had my budget done because it was due on January 14. Omg!!! I thought I had until the end of January to do it! So needless to say, Wednesday was an extremely busy day at work... I'm normally ON TOP OF deadlines. This is not like me!

6. I had a physical on Wednesday afternoon and I ended up getting my cholesterol and blood sugar blood work done. I was so scared to have the needle, but luckily it did not hurt! The nurse told me I had very good veins. I guess good veins means the gross blue kind you can see through your skin...

Do needles freak you out?
Have you seen You?
Did you ever miss an important work deadline?

An extra day off work!

On Monday I had off for MLK Day. It was so nice to have a three day weekend. My alarm was set for 9 but of course I woke up naturally at 6!  I did my normal routine in the morning... Coffee, Cats, and CNN. (The 3 C's!!!)

I saw my bananas were going bad, so I quickly whipped up some banana oat cookies. It's literally mashed up bananas and rolled oats. Mix them together, put them on a sprayed pan, and pop them in the oven for 10 minutes. I don't measure anything, I just DO IT!

They taste like banana bread!
This is before the oats...

At 10am I had a therapy appointment. I have been going to therapy weekly since mid October. I have never been to therapy before and I can't even begin to express how extremely helpful it is! I mean, all I have to do is pay someone and they have to listen to me talk for an hour???? That's like a dream come true!

After my appointment, Paul and I headed to the gym. I have been a running machine these days. I really should have lifted and not done any cardio, but I really wanted to run. ("I really wanted to run" = the story of my life!) So I did a 4 mile progression run ending at a 6:22 pace! Then I did my normal lifting routine. So I got a little bit of everything done.

Then I tried to be productive by going grocery shopping. We just needed some odds and ends but it felt good to get it done. Then I went home and made... what else? A quiche!

spinach, ground turkey, goat cheese, and tomato

I'm working on a post about how I make all of my quiche. Stay tuned....

Later that night I went to the Federal Tap House for a couple ciders. I love cider!

I was happy to have an extra day off to try to heal for good (I have been sick for over a week) and be ready for the kiddos on Tuesday!
Did you have a 3 day weekend?

Celebrity Big Brother Has Started!

Related Posts Plugin for WordPress, Blogger...

Celebrity Big Brother 2 has started! The premiere was on last night. I haven't watched it yet, but it's on my DVR and Paul and I are going to get to it tonight!

There are only 13 episodes and it runs from January 21 through February 13. That means CBB is on most nights of the week!

When the televised show is not on, I can keep up with what is going on in the house with reddit and Rob Has A Podcast. I'm basically going to be IMMERSED in CBB for at least an hour and a half a day from now until the season finale!

I'm very excited for the cast! Here are the 11 "celebrities" that are in the Big Brother House right now...

*Highlighted yellow is who I'm excited to see
*Highlighted in orange is who I never heard of before

Jonathan Bennett
Tamar Braxton
Natalie Eva Marie
Kandi Burruss
Tom Green
Lolo Jones
Kaeto Kaelin
Joey Lawrence
Ryan Lochte
Dina Lohan
Anthony Scaramucci

One of my favorite things about Big Brother is seeing Julie Chen's outfits! Oops, I mean Julie Chen Moonves. I'm glad she stayed on Big Brother and didn't leave CBS after her husband was ousted for sexual misconduct and harassment.

Here we go! The most wonderful time of the year... Biiiiiiiig Brother!!!!!!!!!!
Are you excited for any of these celebs?
Will you be watching?

Weekend Wrap Up!

Well, we were supposed to have a TON of snow this weekend but we barely got any! So much for that huge warning...

I had a rough week. By the time Friday rolled around, I was SO READY for the weekend. A bonus was that it had snowed a bit the night before so our school had a two hour delay! That means I got up at 7 instead of 5:30. I was supposed to lift, but I really felt like running, so I ran 6 miles on the treadmill and did a couple sets of push ups, inverted rows, and stability ball pull ins.

Despite the shortened school day, it still felt loooooong. I couldn't wait to get home. Paul and I had a date night in Carlisle!

First, we hit up Grand Illusion Cidery, which is a place we tried before. The staff is really nice, it has a great ambiance, and the drinks are awesome! Paul enjoyed an IPA and I had a cider. It was a bit dry for my taste, but I'm glad I tried it.

Then we walked to a highly recommended sushi place called Mt. Fuji. OMG YOU GUYS WE FOUND THE BEST SUSHI WE EVER HAD!!!!

I was scared at first because the rolls were around $15, so I thought since we got 6 rolls, our bill would be close to $100. Well, it turns out the rolls were half off! On a Friday night? How is that possible?? I need to research and see if they are always half off or what the situation is because Paul and I were able to stuff our faces for just $44... $54 if you count the wine we brought because it's BYOB.

LOOK AT THAT SALMON!!!!

On Saturday morning I went for a gorgeous six miler on the AT. I know I look high in the pics, but I'm not high, just sick. There was still snow on the ground from Thursday night. I didn't see many people on my way out, but after I turned around, I passed a lot of hikers as I headed back in.

Then Paul and I headed to TJ Maxx and the mall. He needed some new clothes and wanted to try some things "outside the box". I needed some pants because I lost a bit of weight and most of my pants I are too loose on me! Besides my leggings, of course.

I snapped a pic of this shirt I saw at Macy's and sent it to Paul with the caption: "Outside the box???" Hahaha! This is a little TOO outside the box for Paul!

Got some earrings at Claire's of all places.

Freaking love these jeggings! $16.99!!!!!

When I got home, it was time to cook! I still had a quiche leftover from the other night when I made 4 (bwahahaha I'm not kidding!) so I made quinoa explosion, chicken sausages, and roasted red potatoes. I enjoyed a cider while I cooked. I love sipping a drink while cooking!

No food pics... I'm not good at taking them.
Here is the aftermath of all the dishes drying!
I slept until nearly 10am! What in the world!? Then I made some coffee and hopped on the computer to schedule some blog posts while I was feeling mildly motivated.

After a morning of laziness, I hit the gym. I had an AWESOME progression run. I started at 6.5 on the treadmill (9:13 pace) and bumped it up one notch every quarter mile until I reached 5.5 miles. That got me to a 6:53 pace! Then I spent a half mile cooling down. It was a great workout but it wasn't super hard. My heart rate didn't get above 140, so that is good!

Then I came home to shower, eat some quiche, and go out bopping around my favorite "bopping around" stores... Ross and Kohls! I also like TJ Maxx but we were they yesterday.

That night I went to the Federal Tap House to enjoy some ciders and some fish tacos! I should have gotten something junkier than the healthy tacos, but oh well!
Did you get snow this weekend?
Anyone local been to Mt. Fuji?

Phoning it in.

Related Posts Plugin for WordPress, Blogger... Guys, I know I've been phoning it in on here lately. I haven't written much of substance, I haven't been commenting back in a timely manner, and I haven't been reading blogs. I've been busy, stressed, and unmotivated. I can't think of a time when Meg Go Run has been on more of a back burner than it is now. I mean, I'm supposed to start writing my Weekend Wrap Up right now and I just don't feel like it at all!

So I wanted to apologize and tell you I hope my motivation improves a bit and I feel passionate about blogging again. But for now, I may be phoning it in for awhile, and I apologize!

Quick update: Still making quiche, still studying Spanish, haven't bitten my nails yet. That's about all you need to know!
