Throwback Thursday (Kindergarten Memories)

When I was in kindergarten, we only went for half a day. I went in the morning. When we would get to school, the first thing we got to do was play. Our room had some cardboard brick blocks, an awesome kitchen/food set, lots of books, and some sweet cars we could ride on.

Remember these!?

Kindergarten is way different now. Believe me!

I have a lot of random memories from kindergarten...

I remember... when our school nurse came into our room and gave us each a TB shot in front of the class. She just called us up to the front of the room one by one to get our shot. One girl named Amber hid so she didn't have to get one. When I got mine, all I said was, "Ouch!" I wanted to be strong and not cry.

I remember... when our speech teacher taught us a lesson on right and left. She put a red stamp of a cat on our right hand so we would always remember our right and left. The weird thing is, ever since I got a stamp on my hand, I remembered my right from my left! I wonder if I had never gotten that stamp on my hand if I would know my right from my left now? ;)

I remember... we always looked forward to indoor recess because it meant we could play with all the fun toys in our room. Once, I thought it was recess time (I am sure I wasn't listening), so after I handed in my paper, I booked it over to the red car everyone fought over. I grabbed that thing and pushed it a full lap around the room before I realized it wasn't recess time. Oops.

I remember... our teacher gave us a snack every day. It was normally a couple Cheerios on a paper towel. Not kidding. And she would lead us all in a PRAYER before we ate! Can you believe that!? Our whole class clasped our hands and prayed before we ate our snack. That would not fly in 2016!
Do you have any random memories from kindergarten?

  1. I only went to Kindergaten half day too (in the afternoon). I was always so curious who the "morning" students were. I think it's odd now that kindergarten is all day. I thought that was the point of Kindergarten, to ease the kids into school???

One of my memories from Kindergarten was reading a book about aa cat called "Good Morning Bing". I thought "Morning" was such a huge word and could not believe that I knew how to read that...haha

    1. The standards are so much higher now for what K students need to know by the time they go to first grade. I think that's why it's full day. Many of the standards are not even developmentally appropriate.

Ooh "Morning" is a big word for a 5 year old! That is a cute story how you were so proud of yourself. :)

  2. I remember one morning I really didnt want to go to school. I cried before I left, and the whole way there, and then for the first little while of the day. I have no idea why I didnt want to be there! But my teacher was so sweet and helped me through it.

    1. Aw that is so nice that your teacher was kind to you. I went through a period in 1st grade where I didn't want to go to school. I was homesick. I don't remember being homesick in K.

  3. I definitely miss nap time. I would never nap, but now nap time would be great.

    1. We didn't have nap/rest time. I think because it was only half day. At the school I teach at now, we have full day K. I know they used to do "quiet time" but I don't know if they still do. There is so much to learn in K these days so I'm not sure they have time...

  4. My school had prayers and it was a public school. It was the south and the 1990s. I can tell a lot of stories from school and I doubt kids today would believe them and I hardly believe them.

I loved those blocks. My favorite thing in kindergarten was playing in the kitchen area! It's funny because now, the last thing I want to do is cook...

    1. Well I think you need to tell use these stories in a blog post because now I am intrigued! I was in Elem school from 1987-1992. Kindergarten is the only class I remember praying in.

  5. Such fun (and funny!) memories! I remember the teacher made a wall decoration of a tree, like a large tree in the forest. There was a hole drawn on it and one of my classmates told me I could draw a squirrel on it - which of course I did. Uh no. That was not for students to draw on :( Oops. Also, we had a pizza party in our class and I didn't eat pizza so I brought in a PB&J sandwich! I totally LOVE pizza now!

    1. Oh man! That is funny you drew the squirrel because if your friend said it was okay, then of course it must be, right??

  6. I remember the first day, my mom walked me to school and when we arrived I told her "don't give me a good bye kiss". I wanted to appear grown up. She told me later she was dying inside but knew she had to let me go. At the end of the day, she was there waiting for me with a helium balloon and I ran to her and gave her biggest hug and kiss ever! I missed her so much and at that point, I didn't care what anyone thought. But after that, I never didn't show my mom affection in public. I would hug and kiss her all the time...the first day of kindergarten clearly changed me--LOL! And I am glad it did because I had to cram a lifetime of those into 33 years and would love to give her just one more hug and kiss!

    1. LOL how amazing that on day in K altered how you showed affection to your mother for the rest of her life! It sounds like you have know regrets in showing her how much you love her.

  7. I've never seen those blocks before, but they do look pretty awesome!

I love your left right story!! It is so awesome!

I used to walk to Kindergarten, and I vaguely remember skipping it one day and going with my older sister to another girl's house. When my mom found us, she was really mad!!

  8. Did you pray that the Cheerios would turn into cookies? I'd be Atheist too!

I only went for a half a day too. My teacher was so nice, and I was SO SHY. I was supposed to get pushed through to grade 2 and skip grade one, but at the teacher meeting, they decided that I was too painfully shy to skip a grade, and that I should work on my social skills instead. Tee hee!

    1. BWAHAHAHA!

I'm glad they gave you that time to work on your social skills because now you have them mastered. ;)

  9. I have only one memory from kindergarten. One day I couldn't fall asleep during nap time so I stared at the ceiling. That's my only memory, how exciting!!!! lol

Since I went to catholic school almost my whole life we prayed before cheerios and before everything else too! I actually learned my right from my left because I knew I needed to make the sign of the cross with my right hand! I like your cat stamp story :D That's so cute!

    1. Wow! I guess K wasn't that exciting for you!

Well that makes sense how you learned your right from your left. :)

  10. Great post, I haven't thought about my kindergarten for a long time. We had a book of shapes to earn for different skills. I earned a triangle when I learned to tie my shoes. It was a big day.

I had half day too (morning), but my nephews had full day. My kids go to a German kita (daycare, then kindergarten) for six hours a day. It was a lot for my son at first, but now he loves it. It is a very relaxed environment, full of play. My daughter just started elementary school in year one, and is having no problems with an 8-4pm schedule.

So I think a lot of time isn't necessarily bad, but it depends on what the kids do.

    1. That is a cool idea to earn shapes for learning skills. Tying your shoes IS a big deal! The German kita sounds awesome. Play is so important and it's the best way for kids to learn at that age. 8-4 is a long time! I'm glad it works well for your daughter. The school I work at is 8:40-3:20, but with only 2 recesses. They (admin) tried to take away the 2nd recess and we had to FIGHT to get it. I remember having 3 recesses in elem. school!

  11. I loved indoor recess because of all the games, and that we could just sit and chat with friends, but now as a teacher I know it's the WORST THING IN THE WORLD OMG haha.

I remember making butter in kindergarten, and playing with those huge blocks in the picture you posted!

    1. YES. Even though I don't experience indoor recess as I don't have a "normal" classroom, I experience the repercussions of the students not having a chance to run around outside!

You guys made butter? That is so cool!
