You can read the article about this hateful incident here.
Unfortunately, this isn't an isolated incident. From the article:
"There have been a number of incidents of harassment and intimidation towards members of the Islamic Society of Greater Harrisburg. Muslim women have been harassed while shopping, a man had a knife held to his throat and told "We're watching you" and the society have received threatening calls and emails that armed group would come to their mosque."
Because of the threats, there have actually been undercover officers stationed in the mosque during Friday night services. The police presence has been there since September, 2015.
This is horrible. I know just a few ignorant, scared, and hate filled people sometimes make the most noise. It's time the rest of us make some noise in opposition! We need to let those who feel targeted know we support them. But how?
Advice from the article:
"When asked what people in the community can do to support the Muslim community, Samia Malik, an elder in the Muslim community, said "get to know us."
"Smile. Just smile at me when I'm at the grocery store," Malik said. "I almost feel like they think there's 'TERRORIST' written on my head when I walk into the grocery store. Really.""
My SIL spoke about this incident on Facebook and said she was going to write a letter of support to the Mosque. I thought it was an awesome idea and decided to do it as well.At a time when I feel so helpless as to what I can actually do to show love and support to the many groups that have felt marginalized and targeted by the presidential campaign and results of the election, writing a letter of love and support is a single action I can take that will hopefully let the members of the Muslims in my community that there are more people that love than hate.
Imagine if they got hundreds of letters of support and just this one letter of hate?
If you would like to write a letter to show your support, here is the address:
Islamic Society of Greater Harrisburg
407 North Front Street
Steelton, PA 17113
I am doing it! Thank you, friend. What a really wonderful idea.
ReplyDeleteThank YOU!!! It was my SIL's idea, just spreading the word!
DeleteGreat idea Megan! I saw a video where the Pope talked about how there are extremists and criminals in the Catholic community as well, so who are Catholics to judge extremists of other religions. The comments on the video were horrifying. People who call themselves christians saying that there is a big distinction between a Catholic criminal and a Muslim criminal. I mean... seriously? It's very sad how divisive religion can be when it's supposed to teach us to be loving and accepting.
ReplyDeleteI completely agree. I am not religious at all but I am totally in support of people being able to practice their religion safely! The Pope is right... there are extremists in every religion, and to me that's a perversion of the religion that doesn't represent the actual religion. For instance, Westboro Baptist Church. HORRIBLE, HORRIBLE, HORRIBLE people!!! But no one lumps them in with Christians because they clearly don't represent Christian values.
DeleteThanks for sharing the address. I'm going to send a letter!
ReplyDeleteThank you!!!
