Friday 5 (Favorites!)

Related Posts Plugin for WordPress, Blogger... Related Posts Plugin for WordPress, Blogger...

Today's Friday 5 theme is "Favorites". Everyone knows I like to save money. I'm not a coupon clipper or anything. I simply shop at stores that are a lot cheaper than other places! Aldi is the first place that comes to mind. I don't understand why anyone does the bulk of their grocery shopping anywhere else!

But today it's not about Aldi, it's about Dollar General- otherwise known as DG. (Paul and I made up a theme song for DG. Maybe I will sing it to you sometime.)

Here are 5 of my favorite things to get at Dollar General! (Fun Fact: Did you know there are a ton of Dollar Generals in New Mexico? When we were there on vacation this past summer, DGs were everywhere!)

1. Health & Beauty Supplies.

This is the place to go to get all your soap, face wash, shampoo, conditioner, toothpaste, razors, sunscreen, bug spray... you name it! You will notice that I have only pictured generic items. That's because they're cheaper than the name brand stuff and I really don't care if my shampoo is L'Oreal or DG Health. In fact, the name DG Health cracks me up and makes me smile whenever I reach for my body wash. They also have a DG Beauty Line! Yes, I use DG Beauty Face Wash!

Tropical Body Wash- $2.00
Shampoo- $2.75
Conditioner- $2.75
Powerstick Body Wash- $2.50
Lavender Body Wash- $2.50

Toothpaste- $2.50
Razors- $12.95 (Why are razors so expensive!?)
Tampons- $5 (40 count)
Exfoliating Scrub- $3.50
Face Wash- $3.50

2. Make up.

DG does not sell every brand and type of make up, but luckily they carry my foundation and powder. It's much cheaper than at the drug store.

3. Hair Dye.

$3

I would love to go to the salon and get my hair dyed and highlighted to cover the grays... and if it only took one or two appointments a year to keep up with, I would splurge for sure. Maybe I will get regular dye/highlight/touch up jobs in the future, but until then, I will be covering my grays on my own. A box of this stuff is $3 at Dollar General. If I dye it every six weeks or so, that's less than $30 a year for complete gray coverage! It's not the hair color I prefer, but it will do for now.

4. Pringles.

Buy 3 get 1 Free = 93 cents each!

Dollar general is one of the only places around here that sells my favorite Pringles- the TORTILLA kind. Plain tortilla or nacho cheese tortilla- it doesn't matter to me. I love them, and eating half a can in one sitting is no big deal at all. (What a thing to brag about... housing chips.) These cans were $1.25 each, but if you bought 3 you got 1 free. Oh no, four cans of Pringles!!!

5. Puzzles!

DG and Dollar Tree carry Puzzlebug puzzles for only $1. I am a huge fan of the 500 piece puzzles. Warning: The 300 piece puzzles do not fit together right. I have tried several 300s and they never work. The 500s always work.

BONUS ITEM!

This did not make the list, but we randomly bought a new rug for our side door. Chrissy LOVES rugs! He thought we got it for him...

  1. DG is my go to store! I try to avoid Walmart at all cost so DG is the next best place. It's so convenient. I admit that things are cheaper at Walmart but not enough to make me make the trip. I hate Walmart...lol.
But it is funny that you wrote this post this week because I just had a not so good experience at DG. I know you want to hear it so hear goes..lol. I bought 2 $15 gift cards to Dunkin Donuts. My credit card was charged $15. I left with 2 cards. After giving said cards as a gift I was later informed by the recipient that the one card did not work. There was nothing on it!!! I took it back to DG (with my receipt) and told them about it. They insisted that I was refunded on my credit card even though is SAYS I paid $30. She said they knew the one card did not work at the time of purchase. Why the heck did they send me out with TWO cards if they knew only one of them worked?????????. This just happened yesterday so I haven't got a chance to check my bank statement yet. I just find it funny how they are sure I only paid $15 even though my receipt clearly said $30. Oy! I still like DG though! Happy Friday!

    1. LOL of course I want to hear it haha. That sucks!! Total incompetence by the cashier! Something like that would annoy me to the point of not going back to a store. Unless it was Aldi, then I would give them one more chance.

  2. I am all about saving money! I do splurge on my hair--both cut/color and expensive shampoo but I can skimp everywhere else. I think the prices in PA must be higher than CO because even your DG items are more expensive than the Kroger brand items I buy at the grocery store or Walmart items I buy online (my solution to never going into Walmart again). We have a Dollar Tree on the other side of town and I do love to go there! We get the Lays Stax chips (plain). Can't beat $1. Whenever I leave there I tell Rick "look at all this stuff I got that I didn't even know I needed". P.S. don't buy ice cube trays from a dollar store. I wanted to make coffee ice cubes so I bought them but when I went to go break the ice out of them, I broke them in half. Oh well, lesson learned...

    1. There are definitely some things you CAN'T get at a dollar store. Ice cube trays being one! Wow that is awesome your Kroger and Wal Mart items are cheaper than these! Is it the size? A lot of these things are really big and you just can't tell from the picture. DG is cheaper than all grocery items around here.

I definitely get stuff I don't need when I go in DG or Dollar Tree!!

  3. I haven't been to a Dollar General in forever, but about a year ago I went into a Dollar Tree looking for some cheap craft supplies. I walked out with almost everything in the store because ... $1!!!!

    1. Oh man, I do that sometimes too! Actually my favorite running gloves are from the dollar tree. I layer two pair and they are warmer than my underarmour ones.

  4. You guys have WAY more selection at your dollar stores. All we have are a bunch of flimsy cotton swabs and cheesy birthday cards. Ha. No but seriously. If we ever drive across the line we go to the dollar store down there and stock up on toothpaste.

    1. I know, we are always running out of toothpaste!

  5. I've never heard of Dollar General, so I looked it up. There aren't any near me, unfortunately. But I always forget about dollar stores in general. I know some awesome deals can be found so I'll have to revisit the ones by me. Also, I love your cat!!! So cute and squeezable.

    1. Thank you! I love him and he is very lovey dovey and loves squeezes. :)

  6. This is very timely because we are heading there today! Just for a couple of items though - none of what you mentioned. I rarely go there, but now that I know they have such good deals I will have to go more! I typically just by health and beauty stuff at Meijer or Rite Aid. I'm not a big spender by any means. My mascara and eyeliner lasts a long time! And I don't wear foundation, so no cost there. Too funny about the cat and the rug. Love how cats think any item on the floor (laundry, shirts) is a nap place for them.

    1. My makeup lasts a long time too. I think sometimes it lasts longer than you are supposed to keep it. :)

  7. Someone else mentioned Aldi in a post recently. I've never heard of that store. We have Dollar Generals and I have been there -- but not much. I think because one is not convenient to home or work. I get a lot of my beauty supplies as freebies for paying big bucks for foundation.

    1. That is cool you get some freebies! Aldi is the best store. I am so glad there is one near me, otherwise I would have to plan my grocery shopping more strategically... aka not forgetting stuff!

  8. Not all Dollar stores are good but I have one that I love. It has everything!!!

  9. LOVE Pringles!!!!!!! Chrissy is so adorable!

  10. Haha I love it when the cat thinks you bought something for them, when it was actually for you. Both Elly and Sydney often think if I get a jacket or blanket that I must have gotten it for them. I've actually never been to a Dollar General. I'm not even sure if there is one around here. I should check it out if there is!

  11. I need to fine a dollar general around here! We buy alot of that stuff at Shoppers or on amazon but I think I don't really think we are getting the best deal. And Target/Walmart jus get so crowded so I avoid going there as much as possible.

    1. Our Targets and Walmarts are always in plazas and it's just a huge rigamarow to go there. I am so lucky we have DG right down the street!

  12. I get a lot of my health and beauty supplies from SAMS Club--yeah, family of 5, so it isn't really even in "bulk". And to be honest I use whatever has an extra one left over. Like now for antiperspirant I am using men's AXE. I really don't care what brand :).
I get my hair colored at the salon, however I do my inbetweens on my own. The stylist lets me buy the color off of her for the same price she buys it to stock her salon--so it is CHEAP, and I get the exact color she uses. That is the bonus I get for small town living, and coloring my hair for years and years and years...I am trying to decide when to go natural. I am not ready yet!!
My dogs think I light the pellet stove for them in the morning. Of course, the fact that I move their bed over in front of it kind of gives them that impression :).

    1. Awwww haha I love your dog story. :) Girl that is so cool that you are good enough to touch up your hair on your own and you get your discounted color from your hairdresser! I wish I had those connections. :)

  13. I used to color my own hair but eventually the grays became too strong for the box color. Now I go every 4 weeks to the salon. I refuse to go gray. In my mind, I'm 34. And that's my story.

    1. I do not blame you. If/when the box doesn't work anymore, I will get the GOOD STUFF.

  14. I haven't been to a dollar general in ages, in fact I'm not sure if there is even one near me. But, if there is I will definitely have to check those puzzles out. My 4 year old is OBSESSED with puzzles!

    1. Puzzles are so fun. I am a little obsessive myself.

  15. I love your red color! Is it close to your natural color?

  16. I shop at DG for things that go in my prize bin at school! But for my makeup and stuff, I could waste hours in Ulta or Walgreens haha!

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Ooh Ulta is fancy! I am not good at doing makeup. I feel like if I was, I'd enjoy looking around at it more and maybe buying better stuff.

  17. To be honest, I can't remember the last time that I went into a Dollar General. We have one right next to our local post office, and your post is making me think that I should go in there sometime and see what they have.

  18. D is also a place for cheap reading glasses....which we are always losing ( probably because we actually need real glasses & can't see where we've left the readers)
