Hiking with my Honey on the Appalachian Trail

On Friday I had the day off work, and it was glorious! The weather was perfect. After my run, Paul and I went to our favorite diner right down the street. I got the usual: Coffee, orange juice, water, 2 eggs over easy, wheat bread, home fries, and bacon. I cleaned my plate before Paul was even halfway done with his Western omelette.

Then we headed to Boiling Springs to hike North on the Appalachian Trail. This is an area of the trail I used to run all the time, but I haven't been here in quite awhile. It was nice to revisit a place I used to spend so much time.

Paul has been wearing my Garmin and going on a lot of neighborhood walks during the day. He was excited to show me that he became a faster walker since the last time we hiked. (I am a really fast walker, and normally I have to slow down significantly when we hike together... which is kind of annoying. I inherited my fast walking skills from my mom!)

Well, he has gotten a lot faster (despite being on freaking chemo) and it was actually uncomfortable for me to keep up with him! I guess that's how he used to feel when I would walk too fast!

We got to walk through the horse field and the little buddies were out!

Susan, check out Paul's Colorado Pride!!

We did an out and back totaling 5 miles... and we didn't see a single snake!
Have you ever hiked on the AT? Come visit me! I will take you! :)

  1. Sounds like fun! I need to get back on the trails now that the weather is warmer. Rob walks alot faster than me and sometimes its hard to keep up! Especially if my legs are already tired from a tough run.

    1. Are there good trails in MD? I know the AT runs through a bit of MD. One time we drove down to the Mason Dixon line and ran North on the trail.

  2. I have only done some of the New England parts...Dave walks MUCH faster than I do. When we hike as a family, I always "bring up the rear". Sometimes I think he has to walk fast to lead... :)

    1. Hey at least he is scaring away all the snakes. :) I hear the NE portions are TOUGH! The section we did is very easy and quite run-able, but AT'ers call the PA section "Rocksylvania" because there are quite a lot of ankle twisting rocks in some of the sections of PA.

  3. First I noticed how beautiful those pictures of the trail was and then YES, I spotted my Bronco fan sporting his gear and it brought a smile to my face. Way to represent, Paul. I would love to come visit and have you take me on that hike! Looks amazing.

  4. We did part of the AT last year when we were in Boiling Springs. We did the part that is right off the highway but when we finished we discovered the section across the highway where the park and little pond was. We did one lap around there but would have liked to ventured off down that trail as well. I've only experienced it during the fall but would love to do it again during summer!

    1. You definitely went the prettiest way- North like we did. Going South is nice once you get in the woods, but you have to go through a lot of fields first. I am not a fan of fields!

  5. I miss running the AT. I remember us running and talking nonstop. I miss that too! Great company, beautiful surroundings, and much less impact on my chronic back pain. I know our RVing will allow us new trails as we move around this amazing country but we are not in that mode just yet. Good for Paul on improving his walking.

  7. Paul can walk faster than you now?!!?!? Holy cow! Don't you walk at like a 13 minute pace? You guys should join some sort of couples speed walking team! :D

That's so nice that you have pretty trails so close by. I love the sound of walking on trails! The crunch of the leaves, birds chirping, bugs buzzing!
