Friday 5: Turning off.

Hey all! I am linking up with Running on Happy and Fairytales and Fitness for Friday 5 2.0!

The Friday 5 format has changed a bit. We can still list "5 Things" on a certain topic, or we can write a short blog post that takes 5 minutes or less to read.

Today, I just have a short one for ya!


When I got home from work on Wednesday, I needed to be by myself. Not just for an hour cool down period like I normally need, but for the rest of the night.

I didn't want to be with Paul. I didn't want to talk or listen or engage with anything. I just wanted to turn myself off.

Because I don't have kids and Wednesdays aren't piano lesson nights, I was able to turn myself "off".

I watched the news, did a puzzle, listened to podcasts, and messed around on the internet. I jumped from one thing to the other. 

At 7:26, I climbed into bed and got on reddit. It was bliss.

Just doing my own thing without having to talk, pay attention, or listen to anyone was "off" for me.

It wasn't even a "bad" day at work. Nothing went wrong. I was just drained and felt like I had given everything I had to give. I needed to recharge.

  1. I used to feel like this all the time when I worked in a school. Luckily I would get home at least an hour before Rob and would use that time to just be by myself. Now I don't notice it really happening anymore because I'm not talking to other people/kids all day long. But there are still some times when its nice to be alone and not engage with anyone else!

    1. Some days I wish I had a job where I didn't have to talk to anyone and I could just be by myself, but I'm sure I would get bored. One day a week it wouldn't be bad though!

  2. I work from home by myself a lot of days, so I don't need to turn off often. In fact, because I'm an extrovert, I often find myself seeking interaction after the work day. But my husband needs to have a lot of time to himself every evening. It was interesting trying to work that out when we first had kids...

    1. I bet that was hard to workout. I admire the patience and stamina working parents have, especially teachers. I couldn't imagine leaving my classroom of 20-25 kids all day and then going home to more kids!

  3. I like to turn off too. I need alone time, so mostly what I do is go up to bed early and read. My job is super stimulating and sometimes I get overloaded. Plus life with 2 young adult men keeps me on my toes.

    1. I think we have similar jobs as far as stimulation and having to be caregivers. It is truly mentally exhausting.

  4. When I feel like that, I usually go to yoga or do a crossword puzzle. We all need our me time. Happy Friday

  5. Sometimes you just need days like that. I really enjoy being myself at times too. Not having to listen or answer someone is so peaceful at times....haha.

  6. I am glad you were able to get some time for yourself to recharge!

    I don't often get time for myself to just turn off... it feels there is always something that needs done.

  7. That's good that you were able to recharge and have an off-nite.

    Adam and I have a system where if one of us has headphones on the other person doesn't disturb unless necessary. Now that I work from home I don't do the headphones thing very much since I am glad to see another human, but if he has a tough day at the office he does the headphones thing.

    1. That is awesome! When I listen to podcasts in the house I use headphones as well, and I think we have an unspoken understanding that we don't want to be interrupted.

  8. Well, I'm lucky that I don't work anymore. And I spend a lot of time by myself. OTOH, I'm also an introvert who needs quiet & her alone time.

  9. I feel like this a lot. Thats when I head out on the golf course ALONE. Usually I will go with a few friends but at the end of the day sometimes I just need to be alone.

  10. That was me yesterday. I had a rough meeting at the end of the day and left late. I had a sinus headache settle in and not leave, and I just went to bed early.

  11. Umm, yes, all the time! I love my husband very, very much but sometimes I just want to walk in and talk to no one. I think it's normal - remember that Sex and City episode where Carrie and Aiden fought over that?

    1. YES! They should not have moved in together until they had a bigger place. That episode made me feel claustrophobic.

  12. Unwinding and being "alone" are necessary, but often difficult for me to accomplish. I should dig out my yarn...knitting always is a good "downtime" activity for me.

  13. I like to be myself as well. My students talk a lot and many times I just want to be alone and let it be silent.

  14. Having a family around all the time, and people who "need" you all the time gets exhausting and a break is needed. Luckily my days off work end up being alone time quite a bit because the kids are in school and Alan is working out for hours!

    1. I am glad you get that much needed alone time, Lisa! I know you love spending time with your family as well but I'm sure having that time to recharge makes the family time that much sweeter.
