There are some important items to gleam from the article. First of all, the march represents all women and male allies. One of the organizers stated, "We want this to be as inclusive as possible while acknowledging that it's okay to have a women-centered march."
The event is not a "protest" but a "march" or "rally". It is also not anti-Trump. Organizers intend for it to be "an affirmative message to the new administration that "women's rights are human rights."
Organizers also proclaim to be committed to the six principles of Kingian nonviolence. This is not a riot. This is a peaceful rally.
My mom and I are attending the march! A local woman has organized several buses that will travel to DC the morning of the march. We have our tickets and are ready to go! I have never participated in a huge demonstration such as this one, so I am excited to be a part of something like this.
I'm hoping the permits can be obtained, logistics finalized, and that the event will happen and send a peaceful but STRONG message to the president-elect, the country, and the world! I hope it inspires as many people as possible (whether they attend the march or not) to get involved in activism and become more engaged in politics from the local level all the way to the federal level.

ReplyDeleteI did read some controversial stuff about naming this march - they co-opted the name of the 1997 Million Women March (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Million_Woman_March) and women of color felt they were being marginalized. So I'm glad to read the organized wants inclusivity and intersectionality. It's so important to remember that the myriad problems women face are different and compounded for women of color!
I hope you both have a very cathartic and awesome experience at the march!
They are organizing ones in different states to accommodate people who cannot travel to DC. Maybe there is one near you that you could go to?

I have never been involved in a rally. Good for you and your mom for getting involved in that! I'm sure it's going to be pretty awesome, emotional, and intense!

What March is the day before? I hope Roger can find someone to go with him. The bus drops us off at like 10 and picks us up at 6, so just the day. It will be a long day but hopefully exciting.

DeleteHe is protesting the inauguration. He could not stop listing all the reasons why he hates Trump last night, I listed the best I could, but when it was time for bed, I just had to cut him off.... I didn't want to have Trump Nightmares, again!
I wish I could go to this!! I thought about getting a flight, but it's expensive. I'd totally be there if I could. I really hope it's a huge success. We need to be sending a firm message to this administration that we are not going to put up with these anti-women polices.

DeleteOh cool what did you do for police week? For as close as I live, I don't go there often. But we did tour the White House, went to the zoo, and went to some museums... not all in one trip!
ReplyDeleteI have never done this but a few of my friends from here are going to Washington DC for it (I just can't justify the time off work). I hope everything goes well and it is a safe trip for them.
