Colorado, Here We Come!

Related Posts Plugin for WordPress, Blogger...

We finally booked a summer vacation! We are traveling to Colorado for the third year in a row! I know what you may be thinking- we should expand our horizons and go somewhere new. Well, there are a lot of things we haven't done in Colorado yet, so we are doing new things!

The plan is to spend the first day and part of the second day in Boulder. We have been to Boulder before, but only for an afternoon. There is still more we would like to do there.

The next three days we will be staying in Estes Park and making our way through Rocky Mountain National Park. I still have a lot of research to do to pick the best hikes and little towns to stop at, but I am looking forward to that!

One thing we are definitely going to do is travel on Trail Ridge Road. This scenic road is rated one of the top most beautiful drives in the country! Count me in!

Guess who we get to meet when we are in Colorado? SUSAN!!! Susan doesn't blog, but she comments on my blog every day so I feel like she does have a blog! I'm excited to meet Susan and her husband.

This trip is going to severely interfere with my marathon training. For instance, the day we arrive in Boulder I am supposed to run 6 miles at marathon pace (7:49). The last time I ran in Boulder, which is at 5,430 feet elevation, I averaged an 11 minute mile and had to walk a lot!

Ahhh... I remember that run!

Needless to say, I will have to switch some days around during the days we are on vacation!

Throughout the summer we'll go on a couple 1-2 night trips closer to home, but this will be our "big" trip. It's only 5 nights, which is much shorter than our epic twelve day trip last summer. Twelve days was too long for our old asses and by the time we got to San Diego at the end of our trip, we were too exhausted to do much!
Did you schedule any summer vacations yet?
Have you been to Colorado?

  1. I am so excited for us to finally hook up and spend some time together. I love how much you love my state--and summer is the perfect time to visit. I think your running in Boulder will go fine. Just do what you can and know how strong you are making your lungs as you fight for oxygen :) We will be sure to give you a good recovery meal in Boulder! So far, we only have one more trip planned for this year (already went in February and April). Going to MI in July and I am actually very excited because I have never been there and we get to hang out with Rick's awesome cousins!

    1. I've never been to MI either! You guys do get around a lot. :) How many states have you been to?

    2. LOL--we are travel whores. Well, growing up my parents took me to a lot of states via roadtrips so that was awesome. Rick and I have been to Oregon, California, Washington, Alaska, Arizona, New Mexico, Wyoming, North Dakota, South Dakota, Minnesota, Kansas, Nebraska, Florida, New York, New Jersey and then we have been to Mexico, Costa Rica and Panama!

    3. Daaaayumn! So many of those you listed I want to visit- particularly WA, OR, Alaska, WY, ND and SD! Obviously since I live in PA I have been to mostly East Coast states: Ohio, KY (just for a couple miles during a marathon that started in OH), Virginia, MD, Delaware, NJ, FL, NY, Mass, RI, CT, Vermont... CO!!!! NM, NV, AZ, CA!

    4. ..and we really want to get more of the East Coast visited. Rick is dying for us to do a long weekend in Boston. Ugh, why can't we have tons of money and free time?!? We'd get all those items off our list in no time!

  2. That's awesome that you're going back to Colorado. It's definitely on my list of states I want to visit sooner rather than later! And of course I'm jealous that you'll have Susan as a local tour guide!

I think we'll be going to NY this August around my birthday but I'm not 100% positive. Before the Europe trip we were sure we were doing that but now we're not so keen on flying anywhere. We might do a staycation instead and just relax at home! We'll see ... since I'm turning 30 I feel sort of obligated to do something cool, but let's face it, I'm not cool and it's way more my style to stay home! :)

    1. Why don't you want to fly? Just too much rushy rushy? I hate flying. :( Gotta start stocking up on Ativan....

HAHA it is definitely en vogue to do a staycation. But you know what, surely you will take another big trip during your "year of 30" so even if it is not this summer, it can still count!

      Come to Pennsylvania!! :) :) ;) ;)

    2. Too much sitting! After a 9.5 hour flight home from Venice I just can't imagine getting on another plane and sitting in a confined space for any amount of hours! By August my mind might change, who knows?

If I could walk to Pennsylvania (in a short period of time) I would come! I'm just not feeling positive towards planes at the moment!

    3. That's a long time. I never feel positive about planes until we land and I'm alive!

  3. Thanks Karen! I got a really good deal on tickets too, so that was another clincher. You can't beat a round trip direct flight for less than $300!

  4. Love, love, love Colorado! We keep going back there year after year because we know it, love it, and it's cheaper to fly to than a lot of other places. Nothing wrong with that! We do have a tropical trip scheduled before school starts, but we have been tossing around a lot of weekend trips that we want to do. Really need to get the calendar out and PLAN!

    1. I would love to go somewhere tropical! When Paul is comfortable doing that, we are definitely going to do it. I have been saving personal days, so maybe we can even go during the school year next year. :)

CO is the best! We don't ski, I know you guys ski. But we are going to prob do some of those little ski towns on our driving adventures this summer!

  5. I've always wanted to go to Colorado! The elevation would be GROSS though. Yowch. So cool that you get to go!!!

    1. The elevation really affects me. Apparently it doesn't affect everyone but I can barely take a deep breath while running there. By the time we spent several days in CO and moved on to NM and AZ (still high elevation) I was able to breath but I was MARKEDLY slower.

  6. That is so awesome! Have you read about the new fitness trend of people wearing those funny masks to mimic the high elevation?

I expect you will post tons of pictures, right? I've never been to Colorado.

We are planning lots of hiking trips in PA this summer, and hopefully more sections of the AT.

    1. Yes I have seen those masks at Planet Fitness! When I first saw someone on the treadmill with one of those I was like... what the heck??

Of course I will take tons of pics!!! I document all my vaycays.

I have run a lot of the PA AT. I have run from the MD border all the way to about the horseshoe curve. Not all at once, of course.

    2. Wow!! that's amazing!! Have you ever camped it? Roger wants to do 1 week in the trail... but let's be real... he would last exactly 2 days, before he started asking where the nearest Starbucks was. and 4 hours in, I would be asking where the tacos are.

We did the 4 miles near Carlisle, 2 in Swatara park and sections of Pine Grove.

Did you read Bill Bryson's book on the AT? it's really funny.

    3. No way I am not a camper. I have no desire to stay overnight! I like to run the trail then go home, shower, have wine, and sleep in my nice warm bed. Swatara Park is so nice! I have run there before. Yes Bill's book is great! I forget a lot of it but I know it was funny.

  7. I am definitely a fan of going places i've been before. Nothing wrong with that. It just ensures you'll know you'll have a great time! When are you going? (you can text me that if you don't want to put it online)

  8. I really wish that I could be out there when you are!! I'm heading to Co twice in both July and August, so we are not going at all in June. As for running out there, drink a lot of water. Being really well hydrated helps a lot. Do you use nuun? Usually keeping my electrolytes high keeps me feeling good at altitude.

    1. I just ordered nuun off amazon. I have never used it before but I have been trying to figure out my race day cramping issues and I thought maybe nuun would help. :) I will take it to CO!

  9. Hooray! I know you guys love CO; I'm so glad you have your trip booked. Now you can REALLY look forward to the end of the school year!

How did you "meet" Susan if she doesn't blog?!

    1. She doesn't blog but she reads blogs. She comments on mine like every day! And she also comments on some of the ones I read and now I am her FB friend. :)

  10. Awesome! My summer travels will likely include going home to Newfoundland and that's about it. We are going to Chicago again though in October!

    1. You go on some wonderful Racecations! :) Hey do Canadians go to the beach like Americans do? Americans are OBSESSED with the beach.

  11. Ok, I know you love traveling to Colorado, but one of these days you need to make it all the way to Oregon. :) I promise our state will not disappoint.

We don't have any big summer travel plans, other than traveling to Coeur d'Alene twice for my Ironman races. We did book a trip to Hawaii, but that isn't until November. We like to stay close to home during the summer because the weather is so nice.

That is so exciting you are going to Hawaii! We are dying to go there.
