Here is the second installment of my week's workouts. As you will see from my workout on Tuesday, I am finally able to do walking lunges and Bulgarian split squats. I haven't done them since before surgery in January! My left knee felt weak during the lunges but I know doing the lunges will make it stronger. The bad news about all of these wonderful workouts I was able to do is that my IT band is really bothering me. Not during workouts, but after. It is so frustrating. I have a few stretches and I foam roll (not nearly enough), but do you guys have any tips to get rid of an achy IT band?
Here is what I was up to:
Thursday- 5 mile run, easy pace
Friday- REST
Saturday- 10 mile run, easy pace (with friends, woohoo!)
Monday- Queasy, easy 6 mile run (We went out for breakfast and I had 3 huge pieces of French Toast. I totally over ate and my stomach felt terrible the rest of the day.)
Wednesday- 5 miles, 8:19 pace. This pace was an effort due to the extreme heat. It was borderline dangerous. I had a few instances of feeling a bit light headed from the sun. I stopped at 5 because my body was saying, "Girl, get your ass home to the a/c!"
Pros: I took a rest day! And I kept my mileage down to a realistic number (30 mi) considering I am not training for anything at the moment. I am also happy about the lunges and Bulgarian split squats.
Cons: I am not happy with the lack of direction my workouts are having. I talk more about it here. I need to plan better. Oh, and the whole IT band thing...
Did you have a good weekend of workouts?
IT band magical cures? Anyone? Bueller?
Great week of workouts you had--nice and balanced. Sorry about the IT band. Wish I could help but this girl is all about hamstring/hip issues :(
ReplyDeleteSince I am taking a month from running & trying to let my aches/pains quiet down, I had a lot of pool time this week. Mon = walk. Tues/Thurs = swim + pool running. Wed = bike. Not sure what I will do today but need to figure it out in the next 20 minutes or so. Weekend = rest both days since we are heading up to Steamboat Springs today. Oh yeah, and I did a flow yoga dvd (15 mins) 2 days and WOW, sun salutations pretty much work the whole body, am I right. Sheesh.
Really sorry about the IT band. Hoping it calms down soon.
Enjoy your weekend and run w/friends.
Maybe I need to take a month off of running too and just stretch the bugger! You got in some great workouts. I don't know what sun salutations are but maybe I will google it... :)
DeleteDo you think the IT band could be related to your shoes being worn down? Last night I started feeling soreness in my IT band and realized I'm going to have to give in and buy new shoes. I was hoping this pair would hold out until the end of July / beginning of August and I could ask for a new pair for my bday, haha.
ReplyDeleteI am not sure it is the shoes because this has been bothering me for awhile I just don't always bring it up because I don't want to be complainy hehe.
DeleteI haven't worked out at ALL this week. I blame the final stages of closing on the house and packing. Can packing count as a workout?
ReplyDeleteYES you sure can! And closing and moving is stressful so you need to conserve your energy for all the excitement going on in your life!
DeleteO my, I hope this IT band pain does not persist for you. I have been dealing with mine for 5 months. Since the injury I must have been over compensating with other muscles because now I have hip and pelvic problems. I am going to ortho for that next week though. The only advice I can give is just LOTS of stretching which I am sure you have been doing. My it band pain seemed to be worse at night and I read a book that stated that usually is normal. Good luck with that. I can certainly sympathize with you.
ReplyDeleteThanks girl! I have to be more persistent with my stretching I think. I don't know what else to do but stretch and roll, roll roll hehe
DeleteBummer about the IT band :(
ReplyDeleteI feel you on the struggling with running in the heat. I did 5 miles on Tuesday and had to slow down considerably b/c I felt so lightheaded. I took it to the treadmill the next day
Good call! If I could get out for a run early the heat wouldn't be such of a factor...
DeleteWith all the injuries I've had over the years, I've never had an IT band issue - sorry that you are struggling with it.
ReplyDeleteAnd, I hate that feeling of over-eating - I used to do it way to often but about 10 years ago I got to the point that it actually made me feel sick enough I vowed to quit. I guess this has been one of the better things to come from age!!!
It def is a cruddy feeling. I don't even now why I eat dessert when I don't want it because I am totally fine eating it when I DO want it. I guess it may be happy.
DeleteI need to be super dedicated to stretching. Thank you for reminding me of that!
ReplyDeleteSend out an alert if you find a magical IT band remedy! I get pain by the sides of both knees...super frustrating! On a positive note, you had a great week of workouts! Speedy progression run lady!
ReplyDeleteDon't know how I missed this. I had IT Band pain for a few months earlier this year. Unfortunately no magic cure. Here is what worked for me.
ReplyDeleteI started doing lunges and squats. No gym weight, just using body weight. I stretch before and after my runs. I use three specific stretches just for the IT band. And most important, I worked really hard on my stride and foot plant. I was a forefoot striker and really over striding. Let me know of you need those stretches.
What IT band stretches do you do? The ones people taught me do NOT work. I don't feel it at all. So I made up my own. The problem is I look really weird doing them... like some sort of failed contortionist!
