Race Recap: Movie Madness Half Marathon

Related Posts Plugin for WordPress, Blogger...

Despite a lot of things not going my way, I survived the half marathon yesterday. The course was 1/4 mile long, there was a headwind for 3 miles along the river, my salt tabs disintegrated from my boob sweat, and my calves started seizing around mile 11.5... most likely due to the lack of salt! My goal changed around mile 12 from a PR to not having to walk it in. I didn't have enough time in the bank to be able to slow down as to not tear my calf muscles and still PR.

Thankfully, I did not have to walk, my calves are still in one piece, and I still managed a time of 1:40:35 (Unofficial). Not bad, considering the conditions. It wasn't my day to PR, that is for sure. (And of obviously it's hard to pace yourself to PR when the COURSE IS LONG. But I promise I will only complain about that 100 more times.)

Oh, I got second place female! I'm not going to lie, I would have rather been the last female but PR'ed.

I keep wondering...

What my time would have been if the course wasn't long?

How I would've held up if my salt tabs hadn't shit the bed and my calves didn't seize up?

Flat Megan ready to race. Flat Chrissy ready for LIFE!

Here's the full report!

Miles 1-6:

The course started with a loop around City Island and then South along the river to the Green Belt where we did an out and back. I had to pee as soon as I started running and decided I would just pee my pants if I had to. Luckily, the "have to pee" feeling went away and I didn't have to do that.

I felt pretty good at the beginning of the race. Some of my splits were a little fast, some were a little slow. But it all evened out in the wash and I was doing a good job.

Sometimes I thought I felt a side stitch coming on, but I couldn't tell if it was real or in my head. I did some good breathing to keep the imaginary side stitch at bay.

I took two salt tabs at Mile 2. When I tried to take two more at mile six, my plastic baggie was empty! WTF!? I packed four! Where were my damn salt tabs? Then it dawned on me. I had shoved the plastic baggie in my sports bra and the boob sweat/condensation made the tabs disintegrate. Oh well. I felt pretty good, maybe it would be okay? But I was banking on those electrolytes because even though the course had ample water, there was no Gatorade. The last little bit of electrolytes I had was gone. I guess I could have licked the inside of the plastic baggie, and in retrospect, I should have!

There were not many spectators at all and I was on my own for much of this part of the course. I liked it. It was peaceful. There were a bunch of speedy guys in front of me but I was the first woman this whole time. At Mile 5 when I went through the turnaround, I saw the second female was only like 20 seconds behind me. I told myself, Don't do anything stupid! You are not here to win! You are here to PR! I didn't speed up at the sight of her. I just kept chugging and running my own race.

Miles 7-11.5:

Around Mile 7, we were running North along the river and the head wind was strong. My pace dropped a bit. I was okay with it. I was trying to run by effort and my eyes were not glued to my Garmin or anything like that.

It was a little bit muddy and I almost slipped and fell at one point! Boy would have that pissed me off. But a gust of wind did blow a bunch of dirt in my face and eyes. Dang. I was going to look like hell by the time this race was over!

The woman who was in second place started running beside me and introduced herself. We had a mutual friend and were chatting a bit about just running in general. She was very nice. I told her I couldn't talk anymore because I was out of breath, but to have a good race. She pulled in front of me and picked up the pace a little bit as we reached the last turnaround at about Mile 10.5.

I stayed right behind her and started making up some time I had lost from the wind. Maybe I could still PR! I knew running without the wind in my face as we headed back to City Island would be easier, and of course there would be some pep in my step as the miles dwindled down. I can still do this!

Mile 11.5-13:33 (yes, the course was long):

But all that went out the window at Mile 11.5 That's when I felt my left calf seize a tiny bit. Uh oh. I kept running. About 50 steps later, it seized a tiny bit again. Then my right calf mimicked my left. NOT THIS SHIT AGAIN!!!!! If you will remember, I had calf issues at the end of the Dover 10 Miler and MAJOR calf issues at BDR. My calves felt exactly how they did at BDR and I had almost two miles to go. It looked like instead of picking up the pace for the last two miles, I was going to be lowering my pace.

This is also the point I realized the course was either going to be short or long. I knew we were running back over to City Island, but I couldn't remember if we circled the island or not. If we circled it, the course was going to be long and if we didn't circle it was going to be short. Either way, I was pretty pissed off. Seriously, THEY ONLY HAVE TO GET ONE THING RIGHT. THE FREAKING DISTANCE. How hard is it to do that? And I promise, I did not take wide turns, meander, or do anything like that.

The woman in first place pulled farther ahead as my calves were forcing me to slow down. I was sad. I love to sprint it in to the end. There was no way I could do that. You can't push through muscles that are literally knotting up. It wasn't that I gave up, I just had no choice. If I pushed the pace, I was literally going to fall over.

My Garmin beeped 13.1 and the finish line was still quite a ways ahead. Freaking A. I was mad. Somehow I made it to the finish line. They announced my name and that I got second place, which was pretty cool. As soon as I stopped running, my right calf seized and I almost fell. I grabbed water, my medal, and a banana, and then just ate the 'nanner while I kept walking. There was no way I was going to sit down or something stupid like that.

Since there was no awards ceremony and no one had come out to spectate me, I walked about a mile and then jumped in my car and drove home. Oh, a nice girl took my picture before I left. I looked like a hot mess.

So I am not sure what I learned from this race other than I can't let my salt tabs disintegrate and I probably needed more electrolytes than I brought along. I know I need to stop being so nervous before a race starts (I was shaking) and using up nervous energy. I need to figure out how to be properly hydrated before a race. I am not sure how to do that as I use the bathroom 50,000 times before the race. I feel like I am depleted before I even start. That can't be good.

This race wasn't good or bad. It just was. But I'm going to be honest. I am nervous about this calf cramping thing. I need to figure that out or I don't understand how I am going to manage to PR in the half marathon again, let alone the marathon!

Also, the more I think about it, the more FRUSTRATED I get. It seems like my best runs are during training. I never cramp or get side stitches during training runs. I've PR'ed in the half during a training run this fall. I ran a 1:34! Why can I bust that out when I am just running circles around my hood on tired legs but on race day when I am tapered, I shit the bed? Sorry. I just had to vent. I would love your insight on this as I think I am too "in" the problem to have proper insight on it.

That being said, I wish I could just be happy with the way my body performs during training. I mean, it is DOING what I want it to do. So I don't have an official finish time on the internet. Aren't the sum of all my training runs more important than just one day? Yes. I wish I didn't feel compelled to perform a certain way during a race, but I do. I suppose we all do???

One of these days I will ring that PR bell.

Post Race Update: My calves felt a little weird after the race, but by the evening they felt fine. I wasn't tired or feeling beat up the rest of the day or anything like that. It was sort of like after the race was over, I bounced back, which is good news. I refueled at the Pizza Grille, where I ate and drank my weight in pizza and wine. I told my MIL about my seizing calves and the salt tabs that dissolved in boob sweat. "Well your boobs didn't cramp, did they???" she asked. AAAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!

Weekly Workout Recap!

Related Posts Plugin for WordPress, Blogger...

This was taper week for the half marathon that I am running TODAY. POSSIBLY RIGHT NOW!! (If you are reading between 8:00am-10:00am EST.)

Even though I like to taper HARD, I did have some fun this week!

Saturday- Somehow I knew I was going to have an AWESOME run. I was right. I had a great podcast, it was so warm that I only wore shorts and a sports bra, and my ass/hammy did not bother me at all! (It felt weird about a half hour after I was done, but then it disappeared. I can't complain.) The goal of this 10 miler was to just get in some easy miles. Well, easy on this day was a lot faster than easy has been for me! This was another one of those runs where I had to force myself to slow down. I wasn't huffing and puffing at all. THIS IS GOOD. MAYBE I AM MAKING PROGRESS???

Splits: 8:19, 8:10, 8:13, 7:59, 8:11, 8:00, 8:09, 8:08, 8:01, 7:47

Sunday- We went to Planet Fitness and I lifted there for the first time in 10 months! I got to do some exercises I can't do at home, like lat pull down, bench press, inverted row, and tricep push downs with the rope attachment for the cable machine. I can tell you, over the past 10 months, I have definitely gotten stronger!

Paul spotted me on bench press and I was able to do 95lb! (That includes the bar.) Now, at Planet Fitness you have to bench with the smith machine, so I realize if I had to stabilize the bar myself, I would have been able to lift a lot less. But it is still more than I was doing 10 months ago. I tried to do 105lb twice but I just couldn't get the bar up and Paul had to help me. Oh well. Someday!

I also got to bump up some of my free weight stuff since they had some in between weights that I don't have- particularly 12.5, 17.5, and 22.5. I think for my birthday this year I am going to purchase myself those in between weights.

The other gain I was excited about was my lat pull downs with the cable machine. I did 8x80lb, 6x90lb, and 4x100lb! I never did above 80lb on that before so that was very exciting. It was also kind of funny that to pull down the bar when it was on 100lb, I had to jump up and use all of my body weight to bring it down!

Monday- 5 easy miles around my hood. I had a great podcast, it was warm, and I felt fresh. GOOD RUN!

Tuesday- The same exact story as Monday except I did 6 miles instead. The end!

Wednesday- Chest at home. Git 'er done!

Chest Press- 5x10x25lb
Bicycle Crunches- 5x40
Push Ups- 10x10
Shoulder Press- 5x10x20lb
Sit ups on satbility ball- 5x20x10lb
Chest Press (neutral grip)- 5x15x15lb
Stability ball knee tuck- 5x15
Tricep Dips- 5x15

Thursday- Back at home. Git 'er done!

Chair Asst. Wide Grip Pull Ups- 3x15
Band Asst. Wide Grip Pull Ups- 3x6
Bicycle Crunches- 5x40
Dumbbell Row- 5x10x25lb
Sit ups on stability ball- 5x20x10lb
Band Asst. Neutral Grip Pull Ups- 4x8
Bicep Curls- 5x10x15lb
Stability ball knee tuck- 5x15

Friday- Complete rest! We had off school today, so it was fun to really have the entire day free of all commitments!
How were your workouts this week?
Are there any exercises you can do at the gym but not at home?

5 Things About My Race Tomorrow (Friday 5!)

Related Posts Plugin for WordPress, Blogger...

Today's Friday 5 theme is a "free" day (per the rules of the Friday 5 Link Up), so I thought I'd give you the run down about my race tomorrow....

1. I have no clue what to expect. The training I did between April 2nd and now was kind of weird. I've had fast days, I've had slow days, and I've had glute/hammy issue days. The truth is, I have no clue how I am going to feel on race day until I start running.

2. My pie in the sky goal is a PR!!! Can I just get a sub 1:38:07 please???

3. I'm going to carry the following items with me: Salt tabs, TP, Ibuprofin. The thing about the TP is, if I don't have it, I'll need it. If I do have it, I won't need it. I *might* carry water. Not sure about that one yet.

4. My race plan: Try to stick around a 7:25 pace. If I am feeling good around Mile 9 and want to crank it up, I will. But I am not banking on the fact that I will feel good. I fully expect this race to suck. Ha! Maybe I do have expectations!

5. This race looks a little strange. It's the Movie Madness half marathon. It starts and ends on City Island. The route is very similar to the Capital 10-Miler except no bridge, more Riverfront, and more Greenbelt. The reason it looks strange... All the old race pics feature people dressed in costumes. No one is just dressed like a runner! I don't have a costume! Am I going to be the only person who isn't dressed up!? Time will tell.
Hey, have a GREAT FRIDAY!!! We have off school today so I know mine will be great!

Today, I'm linking up with the DC girls for Friday 5!

Big Goals!

Related Posts Plugin for WordPress, Blogger...

When 2016 rolled around, I did not make any goals. I can’t *BOOM* be motivated to make goals just because the calendar tells me I should. I am completely okay with going months and months without having any particular fitness goal. Making a goal just to have one doesn’t fly with me. I need to feel like I WANT to achieve something because whatever I set out to do is probably going to take time, commitment and sacrifice. I’m only willing to do that if it’s something I really WANT.

Well guys, I really want something.

I want to run Boston again. Soon.

Running Boston again was definitely one of my goals, but watching all the coverage on Monday reminded me how SPECTACULAR the race is and I decided I want to run it sooner rather than later. This is a lofty goal. I pretty much have to be in the best shape of my life to qualify for Boston. I wish I could tell you I’m one of those people who can just roll out of bed and BQ, but I am not.

The first time I qualified, the standards were a bit lower (<3:40), and I made it in with a time of 3:38. The second time I qualified, they had lowered the standards to <3:35, but I made it in with a 3:28. That was in the fall of 2012. I’m three years older now! But I’m okay with that. I know lots of people who PR throughout their 30s. I still believe it’s possible I could PR in the marathon distance. Because you know me, it’s not going to be enough for me to simply run a 3:35. I want to run <3:28!

The funny thing is, I’m approaching a new age group! If I run a race between now and when registration for Boston 2017 starts (mid Sept), I'd have to run a <3:35 to qualify for 2017. If I run a race after September and run a <3:40,  it would qualify me for Boston 2018 (since I would be 35 on race day).

Is that too many numbers/dates/math for you? I am not a numbers girl at all, but I did check with the appropriate sources (a fellow blogger’s husband hahaha!) so I think I have my facts straight. Feel free to correct me if you think I’m wrong!

I know this is a big goal… not only BQ’ing but PR’ing. Even if I don’t reach it, I am proud of my marathon PR. And I got to run Boston twice, which I am very, very thankful for. They were great experiences, and if those were my two special days, then I cannot complain about that. But I want to do it again, so I’m going to try!

It took a lot of guts to just post this! I think I made a decision as to what race/races to run to attempt a BQ, but I am not quite ready to put it OUT THERE yet. But it is in my brain. It is ruminating. It has been discussed. Soon I will discuss it with you!
Have you run Boston?
Is running Boston a short term or long term goal of yours?

What's Your Running Highlight Reel?

Related Posts Plugin for WordPress, Blogger...

A couple weeks ago, at the end of a hard speed workout, my brain started going through my running highlight reel. This is something I often do at the end of a tough run. I think about all those happy running moments I have experienced and they flash through my mind like a movie. I'd like to share my running highlight reel with you. I hope you will leave a comment with some of the happy running moments on your running highlight reel- or better yet, write a blog post about it!

1. Winning a 10k. Yes, winning was FREAKING AWESOME, and I recommend that you all do it at some point, but the best part of that race was that my parents and brother were there to see it happen.

2. Harrisburg Marathon, 2012. My PR. I don't think about this whole race, I think about seeing my dad at Mile 2 and at mile 25. He works in downtown Harrisburg and was able to sneak away from work to see me at the beginning of the race, and then again a little over 3 hours later when I had less than a mile to go. I was reaching my goal, and my freaking DAD was there to see it happen!

Mile 24, almost there!

3. Crispy Runs. I used to run with a wonderful group of people called the Crispies. We would get together on Saturday mornings for long runs. Running long is way more fun when you have good company. I have so many fond memories of running with the Crispies!

Me and some Crispies posing before the Phunt 50k at one of the port o pots we sponsored! Gotta love running friends with a sense of humor!

4. Sweet Caroline at Boston. When I ran Boston in 2014, I had really trained to walk/run it due to knee surgery less than 3 months before the race. Unfortunately, sometimes when it was time to take a walk break, it was IMPOSSIBLE to walk. I remember approaching a town square early in the race (probably Framingham) and it was just PACKED with people. A Neil Diamond impersonator was singing Sweet Caroline and the spectators were singing along- "So good! So good! So good!" It was IMPOSSIBLE to take a walk break during that!

5. Harrisburg Mile, 2013. The reason I think about this race is because it is an example of a time I didn't hold myself back. I was neck and neck for second place in my age group and I was about to surrender and let the other girl pass me, but then I decided- NO! WHY NOT ME?

That's me in blue, deciding if I really wanted to, I could pull ahead!
What is on your running highlight reel?

Wonderful Weekend Wrap Up!

Related Posts Plugin for WordPress, Blogger...

Instead of my normal Weekend Wrap Up format, I thought I would list all the WONDERFUL things about this weekend. Obviously, Thursday's news about Paul's health just set us up to be in the BEST MOOD EVER, and everything we did just felt extra wonderful and special.

1. Fueled by General Tso's chicken from our celebration the night before, I had a speedy 6 miler on Friday morning. I had to force myself to slow down, that's how good I felt! I am not going to question why this run happened, I am simply going to blame it on the most logical reason: My training is working!

2. On Friday evening, I went to Paint Nite with my friend, Bree. We had a ton of fun and I came home with yet another picture I am really proud of!

3. I slept until 10:00 Saturday morning. That is a little later than I would normally sleep on a Saturday, but it was AMAZING, and clearly I must have needed it! My little buddy loved sleeping in too...

4. Powered by the long sleep and Quaker Oatmeal Squares, I had a wonderful 10 mile run around my hood. My podcast was awesome. It was so warm that all I needed to wear was shorts and a sports bra. Even though I only wanted to run easy miles, these splits felt easy: 8:19, 8:10, 8:13, 7:59, 8:11, 8:00, 8:09, 8:08, 8:01, 7:47. Yeah!

5. We went to my brother and SIL's house on Saturday afternoon for homemade pizza. I love my family! And look, we even got a picture of Tyler and Debby. We never get pictures of them! One of their adorable daughters did manage to make it into the picture.

6. Paul and I went to Planet Fitness on Sunday. It was my first time lifting there in 10 months and I made some awesome gains! I benched (with the smith machine) 95lb and did 100lb on the lat pull down! It takes me awhile to see consistent gains in my strength but if I just plug away at it, eventually it happens!

7. Throughout the weekend, I did this really fun 1000 piece puzzle! I got it at Good Will for $1.99. You can't beat that!

Tell me something WONDERFUL about your weekend!

Wonderful News!

Two things before I tell you the WONDERFUL news!!!

#1

HAPPY RUNNING to all my pals running Boston today! And a special shout out to my cousin, Alex, who is running his first ever marathon at Boston! I am so excited for him to experience the magic that is BOSTON!!!

Alex (left) put us up for the night and cheered me on at Boston in 2014. This year I will be cheering him from my classroom! I wish I could be there!

#2

Thank you all for your kind words and insight on yesterday's post. I can't tell you how much better it made me feel! My intention was really to get things off my chest, but when you all take the time to write really thoughtful and insightful comments, boy does it really get me thinking. I am so appreciative!

NOW, HERE IS THE WONDERFUL NEWS WE FOUND OUT ON THURSDAY!!!!

Paul has been on chemo and radiation on and off since October. On Thursday, he found out that the new tumor growth they have been targeting is GONE! The old tumor they could not get out with surgery has not grown at all since it was discovered several years ago... which is good news in itself, but it looks like it is responding at least a little bit to the treatment because it is a tiny bit SMALLER. This is even more proof it still is a low grade tumor. He is doing three more rounds of chemo and then checking in with his doctor to see where to go from there.

WE ARE SO HAPPY! We feel like we have a new lease on life! And of course we are so happy that all the shitty chemo and radiation isn't for naught and that putting all that poison into his body is helping in the long run!

Are you wondering how we celebrated Paul's awesome news? We got Chinese takeout! Tumor gone? Call Chef Wong's!

WoooooooooFREAKINGhoooooooooo!
