A Day In The Life

Hola Blogland! It’s time for a Day in the Life post. I documented 2/8… which was Wednesday of last week! Better late than never, right? Join me, as I navigate through a Day In The Life of a runner/cat mom/wife/teacher…

My alarm went off at 5:30am. I was due to lift, but since I knew we were going to get snow the next day, I figured I’d squeeze in a run and save the lifting for when we would be snowed in. Temps were in the low 40s so I put on shorts! I was out the door by 6:02.

My run was awesome. I felt good and I was just so thankful to be running.

When I got home, Jelly was waiting for me at the window. When he saw me walk up the driveway, he sprinted to the side door to greet me.

I love my boy!

Then he stretched with me… which basically just means he rubbed up against me and laid by me with his “pet me eyes” while I did pigeon pose.

Then it was time to shower and head to work. I ate my cerel in the car and sipped iced coffee. If I get to work early, I just chill in my car until it is time to go in. I’m stubborn like that.

I actually got a lot done in the morning before the students arrived. I even had time to take some photos of my outfit I wore so I could add it to my Friday 5 Post.

While I was at stairwell duty in the morning, one of my third grade students gave me this sweet note...

In the morning I taught three classes- 2nd, 3rd, and 4th grade. 3rd and 4th grade are practicing for our show in April. It's rock and roll themed.

At lunch I popped over to my SIL's house (she lives literally 90 seconds away) to pick up some stuff my mom left there for me. I got to chat with her a little bit and see the kids. I couldn't hug them because they were eating lunch and were a little... messy.

Ellie gave me some of her artwork so of course I hung it in my classroom as soon as I got back to school.

Then I quickly ate my lunch- homemade chicken noodle soup with EXTRA chicken. Come on, I can't be the only one who puts and extra chicken breast on top of my chicken noodle soup.

My afternoon was jam packed... kindergarten, 1st grade, 2nd grade, then 4th grade. The low light of the day was when about 20 4th grade students had to come to my room at their recess (which is actually during my first grade class) to make up songs they have to play me on their recorder. They are at the point where their work is so late that I don't know what else to do but make them come at recess to do it! I hate taking recess, but the thing is, if they practiced at home (like they are supposed to) all they would have to do is spend about a minute with me at recess to play their song and then they could go right outside with their friends. But they don't practice at home. So they end up spending the whole recess in my room practicing... sometimes several days in a row. It is horrible. I need to figure out another way to motivate them to get their work done. I have never run into this problem before! I'd have 3-4 kids who drop behind but not TWENTY. What am I doing wrong!?

Okay, end teacher rant.

I was BONE TIRED by the time I got home. There's just no other way to describe how I was feeling! It didn't take me long to get into my PJs and get all set up with my crackers and my computer.

I spent two hours in front of my screens relaxing. Then Paul and I had an epic card battle that basically ended in a tie.

We ate dinner while we watched Colbert. We never sit at the dining room table to eat unless we have guests over or the power is out.

I stayed up later than normal because I knew we would at least have a delay the next day. The weather report was calling for lots of snow. I cuddled up in bed and read the first two chapters of The Audacity of Hope. So far, it is pretty good... and very strange. Obama wrote this before he became president, so there are a lot of moments where I am reading and thinking, "Oh, if only he knew how this was going to turn out!"

Welp, that was my day! Thanks for coming along for the ride!

Have you read any of Obama's books? What did you think?

Do you eat dinner at the table?

What are your favorite card games to play? We like Monopoly Deal, Sequence, Casino, and Rummy.

  1. Oh I think Obahma's book sounds interesting. Maybe i'll pick tht one up someday.

Why do you sit in your car before school? Do you feel like you get no "down time" as soon as you enter the building?

We rarely eat in our dining room as well unless I cook a meal that I deem "worthy"...lol. We usually eat in the kitchen or like you in the living room watching our shows (which I think is sad, but it happens..lol)

    1. I have since finished the book, and while I found the first several chapters interesting, I will be honest that I skimmed the last third! I also realized that I am not agreement with his merit pay for teachers idea. I'm not sure if he still believes in that...

Our school district is cracking down on arriving at work late. Even if you are 30 seconds late... even if you are 5 min late but stay an hour extra after school. They don't care. So to make sure I am not late, I arrive at school about 10 min early, but I sit in my car and chill.

Paul and I love eating in front of the tv. It's our together time and we laugh together. I think it's okay if you don't have a family! I can see why families want to sit down and have meals together.

  3. I am sorry your kids are frustrating you right now. I wouldn't take it personally but I know it's hard not to. I hope things can turn around soon. Oh, gosh...Rick and I NEVER eat at our table. Always while watching the news or sports and just chatting about our days, or the current events or stupid sports stats (questions I think in my head while we are watching and the someone has to google the answer). I used to feel bad about it like we "should" sit and just eat but unless we are at a restaurant or have people over, it's always dinner in front of the TV!!

  4. Before kids, we used to eat in front of the TV. Post kids, only pizza night (for adults) is in front of the TV! Parenting really turns you into responsible adults. haha!!
I'm sure that is frustrating about the recorder practicing. I think I would have a headache after all of that recorder playing going on!

    1. I completely understand eating at the table as a family. That's how I grew up!

It is not fun hearing all those recorders... I sometimes get to the point where I tell the kids we have to stop because I can't take the chaos anymore. It's not that they sound bad, but when they are all playing different things, it doesn't matter if they are good, it sounds like a jumbled mess.

    1. I would eat dinner at the table too if I had a family!

Mary Higgins Clark always uses the term "bone tired" in her books. That's where I heard it. :)

  6. That is a very sweet note from your student! do you get this often? Do you keep all of them?

What is Clark eating? Your nieces and nephew are so cute!!

Doe the practice go home with the kids as assigned homework? my son never mentions Specials homework, I'm going to start asking him about it.

We eat at the dinner table, because growing up, my parents were always very strict about eating outside of the dining room. but every now and then, we eat in front of the TV, for movie nights on Friday.

    1. I'll get a note like that once in a while. I don't keep all of them. :( I should. Clark is eating cottage cheese! My SIL is so brave.

Okay, so the songs they have to play for me... they have a range of time to complete the song for me. As it gets toward the end of the window, I send a reminder note home of the actual last class they have to play it for me. I don't say exactly how long they have to practice at home because for some kids, they can learn a song really fast, others can't. I have a youtube channel they have access to that teaches the song. So if they go to that, they could probably learn the song in 2-3 ten min practice sessions. But some kids don't do that. Some just play around and call it practice!

Also, I can tell if a kid practiced, even if they are having trouble with the song. They hold their recorder confidently, they have control over their fingers, their eyes are on their music. If I can tell they worked on it, I can help them along as they play it. I don't mind that at all. It's when they sit down and are like, "I never played this before". Hey, at least they are honest! If they didn't even try, sorry, gotta stay in from recess. If they tried at home, then I can give them some help. And normally with a little help they get it independently anyway!

Okay, that was a lonnnnnnnnnnnnng explanation. The short story is I am tough on them but if they are trying their best I am not unfair in the least.

Growing up, we were allowed to eat snacks in front of the tv but we never ate dinner in front of the tv. It's possible we did that once in awhile if we ordered pizza or subs (but we would have been older, like MS or HS) but I really don't remember. All my dinner memories are at the table!

  7. I ate dinner at my coffee table, but now eat at the dining table since the current apartment doesn't have my coffee table. I can't sit on the floor anymore because my legs protest. Oh the joys of getting older.

  8. I don't even know the last time I ate dinner at the table! Or even *a* table! Mostly it's booths when we go out, haha. It's hard because our tables are so cluttered and we got a new couch, so we don't want to eat on the new couch.

I really like nights in watching TV, eating dinner, and just doing nothing after work!

  9. I love Day in the Life posts!

Adam and I hardly ever sit at the table together to eat dinner, but I often sit at the table by myself. That sounds really sad but it's not! I like eating at the table and he doesn't. Life is too short to not do what you want!

I hope you are starting to feel better!!!

  10. When we lived in our apartment we never ate at a table- always on the couch. Now we do eat dinner at our kitchen table, I think because when we first moved we got new couches a new carpet and didnt want to make a mess. I eat breakfast standing up at the counter and lunch at my computer.

  11. You really pack a lot into your day! What time do you go to bed?

I stay in my car if I arrive early, too. I like to enjoy my music and scroll through my phone one last time before starting the work day.
