This is next level shit.

I couldn't sleep again on Sunday night. I got my period that afternoon and took some Pamprin for my lower back pain. It said it could cause drowsiness and I was so sleepy! I don't know if it was from the medicine or from the normal fatigue the first day of my period. But I fell asleep right after Paul fed the cats at 9. I didn't take my normal 25mg of diphenhydramine since I was so tired to begin with...

I slept soundly for about three hours and had very vivid dreams, so I think I was in a deep sleep. But when I got up to go to the bathroom at 11:59, I just could not fall back asleep.

First I tried reading. I read from 12:00-1:19

Then I tried to sleep from 1:19-3:05

Sleep wasn't working, so I read again from 3:05-4:00

At 4:00 Paul went to the bathroom and then we laid in bed and talked until the cats started rumbling to the point where we had to get up and check on them.

At 4:22 I admitted defeat. It was time to get up.

This time it wasn't my thoughts that kept me awake. I was so tired, I just could not fall asleep! My back was hurting and I was getting hot flashes. Did I sleep too much on Saturday night? This doesn't make any sense! I was so freaking tired when I went to bed, I should have been able to get a solid eight hours!

I decided I'm going to start logging my sleep.I need to find the sweet spot and only sleep for that amount of time. I'd rather sleep 7 hours straight every night than 10 one night and 4 another night.

I didn't know what to do on Monday afternoon. Do I take a nap? Do I go to bed early? Do I go to bed at my normal time?

THIS IS NOT OKAY!!!!!!!

Oh a happy note, I had a really fast 6 miler. The only thing that feels good on no sleep is a run.

Did you ever log your sleep?
What is the perfect amount of sleep for you to get?

  1. When I was jet lagged a few weeks ago I tried to going to bed at like 7:30 or 8 one night...but then I woke up in the middle of the night and couldn't fall back to sleep. I have found that if I got to bed too early that i don't sleep well. I do best when I stick with a regular schedule of about 7.5-8 hours of sleep.

    1. I think I could learn a lot from you. That's what I need to do. Like maybe 10pm-5:45pm every night, no matter what. 10 just seems so late to me, but that's nearly 8 hours sleep if I did that.

  2. ugh...so frustrating. My perfect amount of time to sleep is 8 hours! More if I am feeling run down. I woke up at 2:15 am on Sunday and never fell back so sleep. Surprisingly I wasn't wrecked by the evening and went to sleep at my normal time. I think sometimes we just need less and sometimes we need more. I do think logging it will be a good way to see patterns and maybe what is causing this. How did you sleep last night?

    1. I slept AWESOME. 9pm-5:45 without a SINGLE WAKE UP!!! I couldn't believe it. I deserved that awesome night of sleep. :)

  3. Oh man this makes me tired for you as I read this. Did you function okay the day after with such little sleep? I know I have nights were I go to bed around 10pm and wake up at 12 to leave Baylee out and it seems like it should be much later than it is. I am happy to see it is only 12 and I can go back to bed for several hours! I hope you can find a happy medium with your sleep.

    1. Well I took the afternoon off work. The morning I only had two classes. I had zero patience with 2nd grade, like to the point I was not fit to be a teacher! 4th grade was understanding. I was trying to explain the lines and spaces of the treble staff but I was mixing up my words. They were nice, they were like "It's okay, we know what you mean," Hahaha! I went home at noon but I was afraid to take a nap because I didn't want to NOT be able to sleep that night. So I powered through. Laid around, did a puzzle. Slept from 9-5:45 last night with ZERO WAKE UPS! Boy did I have to pee hahahaha!

  4. I don't log my sleep but not being able to sleep makes me so anxious! Then you see the clock and you think about how you might not get any sleep that night and it just makes me super nervous and even more unable to sleep. Personally I like sleeping 7-8 hours a night if I can get it... which isn't often. I do take melatonin some nights to wind down so I can get to sleep quicker and I would suggest that if you have issues.

Way to go on the speedy run!

    1. 7-8 hours sounds perfect to me! I definitely have the TIME to get that much sleep, my body just doesn't always cooperate. I used to take melatonin before bed. It helped me fall asleep. The diphehydramine I took (25mg) helped me fall back asleep if I was woken up. But what started happening was I got diahrhea (sp) for about 10 weeks straight. It was horrible. I went to the doctor and they said try giving up dairy. Um, no thank you haha! Dairy never gave me problems before and I did not WANT to believe that dairy was now going to be a problem for me. Well, a blog reader told me her husband got diahrhea from melatonin and maybe I should try cutting that. Well I did and my diahrhea went away! Now, I don't know for SURE that is what caused it... it could be a coincidence that it cleared up as I was going off melatonin. But that is why I am scared to try melatonin again!

  5. It sucks that you are not sleeping well!! But at least you have super speedy runs to make up for it? yes? too soon?

I wear a fitness tracker that tracks my sleep. It likes to
yell at me about only sleeping 5 hours before a half marathon.

I'm curious, what is keeping you up? are you a light sleeper? Do you drink anything sugary before bed? this is how I know I'm old. I can't have any soda or ice tea after 8, or i'll be up until midnight. Do you eat candy or chocolate before bed? Could that be keeping you up?

    1. Oh man, all very good questions. No, not too soon to be excited for a fast run. ;) 5 hours before a half? Wowzer!

Okay, sometimes thinking about work stress keeps me up, but the night in question here it wasn't that. It was like I was tired but I just could not fall asleep! I did have 3 airheads right before bed and sangria around 5... that definitely could not have helped. Alright after reading everyone's comments, I'm going to blame the airheads.

  6. I'm an insomniac. I have been for years, and years and years. For me, it is closely linked to my anxiety disorder so once I started medication (Cipralex) then my mind was able to settle and I could sleep with ease. When I went off my meds to do therapy (dealing with underlying issues, learning my triggers and then using new tools to deal with anxiety isses) I began managing the insomnia as well! So yeah, for me it's really closely linked. I know it's not that way for everyone though.

    1. I am glad you are not only managing your anxiety but also your insomnia! What sorts of things do you do that helps? Besides the meds.

  7. One of the things that I have tried...no alcohol after 4pm. I find that even with one glass of wine, when the alcohol leaves my system, I wake up. Same thing with snacking, and the more sugary, the worse it is...
Insomnia stinks. I can't sleep well the day before my period, thru day 3...

    1. Oh no... I don't get home from work until 4pm! I have been enjoying my sangria around 5pm. I know for sure alcohol messes with sleep so I suppose that is something I have to think about seriously.

FREAKING PERIODS! My periods used to not bother me at all and now it really messes me up for 2 days.

Oh, I did have 3 airheads right before bed. That could have contributed.

  8. I definelty can't function unless I get enough sleep. I always try to get 8 hours, although sometimes that can be hard. I really hate it when I start having my mind wander to work. You can try counting backwards from 100 with each count on your inhalation. I hope your sleep gets easier.

    1. Thanks girl! I never counted backwards from 100. That is a good idea! Thanks. :)

  9. Well that stinks! There should be something to look forward to as we get older, and needing less sleep should be one of those things! I guess that means you're not old, Karen!

  10. Ugh I loathe nights like those. Mostly I'm a great sleeper but I did have a similar night about a month ago. I watched all the really late TV that I never see. I wear a tracker that monitors sleep and how deep it is. That was eye opening. Pardon the pun!

    1. That is so interesting that your fitness tracker can actually tell how deep you sleep!

  11. Dang, that is a rough night. I sleep pretty well, I am thankful for that. Except if I drink a Monster energy drink. I have learned my lesson about those!! Hope you get back on some normal schedule for sleeping. And speaking of periods, I barely had one this month. The thought of menopause happening in the very near future is freaking me out :(

    2. Lack of caffeine other than in the morning after my run maybe? Who knows, but I'm not complaining!

  12. I'm sorry that you've been getting such shitty sleep! Have you tried taking benedryl? I know it's probably not good to get dependent on a sleep aid, but whenever I really need to fall asleep early I take a benedryl. It knocks me OUT cold in like 15 minutes no matter how awake I feel before taking it.

Some nights when I'm laying awake I look over at Cecil sleeping soundly and feel jealous.

    1. Aw I am totally jealous of the kitties and their ability to sleep! They have no cares in the world. :) I take 25mg of diphenhydramine. I think I have built up a tolerance though because it used to help me fall back asleep after being woken up but it doesn't really do that anymore. Ugh, so many things to think about!

  13. My sleep patterns suck. I have no problem falling asleep but I cannot stay asleep. I usually wake up every 1-2 hours. The after 3am wake ups are killer. I often resign myself to not going back to sleep and I get up and putter around. I do try reading or going to the couch and that sometimes helps. I hope you find a fix.

    1. Thanks girl! I wish you didn't wake up so often. Why do you think that happens?

      Delete
  14. I'm so sorry this happening!! I know some people swear by having a sleep routine. In bed and wake up at the EXACT same time daily. Eventually it gets your mind into the habit and makes it easier for your body to fall asleep and stay asleep. But after a night that the one you had, I'd be needing a nap in the afternoon, which would throw everything off again.

    1. I would definitely be open to getting up and going to bed at the same time each day but... the weekends! I mean, I want to stay up and do fun stuff on the weekend and NOT get up at 5:45. Maybe if I could make myself get up at like 7 though and not just sleep as long as I feel like? I normally don't sleep that late on the weekends anyway... 8:30 or 9 usually, but still quite a bit longer than 5:45...

  15. New reader, first time commenting. I was having a really hard time staying asleep for months and magnesium has made a world of difference for me. I got some off Amazon that is supposed to be absorbed better than the kind most often found in stores. I highly recommend it! I take it around lunch time, because one time I took it right before bed and was awake for hours. Apparently that's a thing.

  16. Sleep takes on a whole new meaning with you have a one-year-old. Thankfully, Axel has always been a good sleeper and I've probably gotten more sleep than most parents. That being said, Axel is an early morning riser and I like to veg and enjoy my evenings... two things that don't mix well. I typically get about 7 hours of sleep each night and function pretty well, as long as I start the day with coffee.

I know how bad it sucks when you can't get into a good sleep rhythm and routine. :(

    1. I'm glad for the most part Axel lets you sleep. I think 7 hrs nightly would be pretty good too as long as it was every night!
