Just freaking eat some ice cream!!!!

A little over a week ago, Paul and I sat down and had a serious discussion. We were eating too much ice cream. The last trip to Dairy Queen was the straw that broke the camel's back. Something had to be done.

We vowed to give up ice cream for a few weeks. This should have been no problem. Last spring, we gave it up for a couple months. Two weeks should have been easy peasy.

Wrong.

The point of giving up ice cream was to eat less sweets. Well, do you want to know what I ate instead of ice cream?

- Donuts
- Fruity Pebbles
- Cookies
- Pudding
- Chocolate Cake
- Chocolate Morsels w/ Peanut Butter
- Canned Peaches

Yeah, our plan didn't work. It turns out, if I want sweets, I will find a way to get them- ice cream or no ice cream. The canned peaches was the last straw. I mean, holy shit, why do I even have canned peaches in my pantry, and who even EATS canned peaches? NOT ME!

Oh well, I learned a lot from this little experiment. I should just eat what I crave, rather than putter around the kitchen trying to fill a hole that can only be filled by ice cream.

  1. Yes! When I was doing my nutrition counseling I would tell people that if they craved something to have a small portion of it instead of "eating around it" and then eating it anyway. I feel this works for two reasons, obviously you satisfy your taste buds for what they want (a candy bar NOT an apple) AND you don't play a mental game with yourself about "good" and "bad". To me, this is such an important step in learning to eat naturally and listening to our bodies. And like you said with the DQ, a kids cup is enough to "fill the hole". Good for you, Meg. I think you should get your degree in nutrition. You are over 1/2 way there, lady. Hugs!!

  2. Canned peaches! Oy, that's how you know you should have just had ice cream because no one should eat canned peaches unless they are in a hurricane shelter!

I like what S Sharp said above. I hate those charts that are like "craving X then eat Y." I think we need to be able to trust ourselves to eat the things we crave without going overboard.

Which flavor are you gonna go get?

    1. I hate those craving charts too, Kristina! Or, on The Biggest Loser, they would do a commercial within the show for chewing gum. They would say, when you are craving a sweet, just chew on this AWESOME chewing gum that is flavored- key lime pie, apple pie, orange cream, etc. Ummm no. When I want a sweet, I do NOT want gum haha. We ended up getting moose tracks and cookies and cream. We're not messing around anymore. :)

  3. Have you tried just eating a little bit of good quality dark chocolate? At least it's on the healthier side and a little goes a long way!

    1. Nah, I mean, when I want chocolate, I eat chocolate. I guess my whole point is when I DO want ice cream, just have some, not a TON, rather than do what Sue pointed out- "eating around the craving".

  4. You should just enjoy what you love and splurge a little. You are fit. You are healthy. A little DQ never hurt anyone. I always say, moderation is the key. I have a demanding sweet tooth and have dessert almost every night. Junior Mints and Hot Tamales are my weakness. I could also eat cupcakes every day, but don't. :)

    1. Thank you, that is definitely the mindset I need to have. :) Cupcakes are so good! I am with you on that.

  5. Sometimes you just need ice cream! But DQ can be pricey...you could buy a half gallon and a yummy mix-in and make your own blizzard at home!

  6. I swear by having two squares of dark chocolate every night. Sometimes I want more, like ice cream, and I will happily indulge that craving.
