Colorado Adventures!!! (Day 3)

This is Day 3 of our Colorado vacation. I talk about Days 1 & 2 here.

Onward!

It was really hard for me to sleep past 5:00 am in Colorado. Most mornings I was awake around 4:30, laid in bed for a half hour, and then finally got up. That morning, I loaded up on coffee and went for a flat 4 mile run around a nearby park. It was much easier than my run the day before! I didn't want to do too much because Paul's cousin Jen was picking us up for an early hike.

I had no idea what to expect with the hike. I was picturing Pennsylvania landscape because that's all I know. Silly me. We headed to Matthew Winters Park, and the whole way there, we passed the gorgeous green foothills I desperately wanted to run.

Well, I got my wish! Not only did we get to hike the foothills we got to see the huge red rocks!

Paul and Jen

Me and Jen

After a two and a half hour hike, we took a quick drive over to Red Rocks amphitheater. During the summer evenings it is a music and movie venue. During the day, it is a tourist spot, as well as a popular workout area due to the many steps.

I wanted to run up the famous steps but I was too tired
from our hike to even walk DOWN them!

We were starving after our hike, so after Jen dropped us off at our hotel, we cleaned up and headed across the street to grab some food at Mod Market. We ate our yummy sandwiches on the lawn of the Denver Museum of Nature and Science.

Mod Market is one of those froo froo places that lists the calories and macros
of your food right on your receipt. Seriously?

Oh, and their water came in a box.

The museum was AWESOME. If you are in Denver, I highly recommend going. The only bummer was that we didn't know we needed to pay extra to see the Aztec exhibit and by the time we realized it, that exhibit had already closed. I was annoyed because nowhere at the ticket counter did it mention that the Aztec exhibit cost extra or that it closed early. This almost puts the museum on the shit list right beside Advantage Rental Car. Just kidding.

We did get to go to ancient Egypt and learn all about mummies. We also got to visit the dinosaur exhibit which pretty much took us through the time period of the earliest life forms all the way to humans. We only had 2 hours in the museum before it closed and it definitely wasn't enough time!

Paul and the Moose!

Just being silly...

I'll stretch anywhere if my legs are tight.

After the museum, we hit up a marijuana dispensary called Sweet Leaf. In case you didn't know, weed is legal in Colorado- medicinal as well as recreational. I didn't buy anything because I don't smoke weed, but I still wanted to go in a dispensary because I think it is really awesome that marijuana is legal there. I plan to write a more detailed blog post soon about my support of the use of marijuana for medicinal purposes, but for now I will just quickly mention that I think it is a crock of shit that something that has been proven to help people who suffer from seizures (like my husband) is still illegal in PA for no good reason. I better stop now because I am getting hyped up about it. It is currently legal in twenty-two states and D.C. That's almost half the country. Hopefully PA will catch up to the times sooner rather than later.

By now we were starving so we grabbed "gourmet waffle sandwiches" from a place called Bruxie and ate them in our hotel room.

This was bigger than it looks. It had a waffle for bread, two hamburger patties, cheese, a special sauce, and grilled onions. I ate the entire thing and was sound asleep in no less than 5 minutes.

What can I say, it was a long day!
Does your city have any good museums?
Ever have a waffle sandwich?
What do you think about receipts listing calories and macros?

  1. Looks like such a fun day! Wish you could have seen a concert at Red Rocks while you were here. It is amazing.

BTW, beyond impressed at how much you were able to do (run, hike, etc) while here. It's a lot no matter where you are but you coming from lower elevation to 5200+ feet. Wow. I have always in inspired but now....well, there are no words.

    1. I looked at the sked and there wasn't anything good until July 4th but we were going home that day. But believe me, when I saw that place I was thinking how cool it would be to see a show there! Oh and I will tell you the scenery helped with the ability to still do workouts. I mean, it was just soooo gorgeous it would be a CRIME not to get outdoors and be physical.

  3. Beautiful pictures! Look at that awesome sandwich! Who would think to use waffles for bread? Sweet!!!!
I don't know my personal feelings about marijuana but our state {NY} just passed legalizing it for medicinal purposes. I don't think it goes into effect into next year though.

    1. That is WONDERFUL! Now so many that are suffering can benefit from something that might work for them. I am actually surprised it has not been legal in NY yet... NY seems pretty forward thinking on both issues. But congrats, that is great for your state and I hope PA is close behind!

  6. These pictures are stunning!
I'm thrilled that NY legalized marijuana for medicinal purposes - I agree with you 100% that it should be legalized. Keeping it illegal causes such unnecessary suffering. I could go into a number of other reasons why I support the legalization of marijuana, but for the sake of keeping this short, I'll just say that I hope to see all 50 states legalize it in the near future!

    1. It's gonna happen, it's just a matter of time! I think more doctors need to come out publicly supporting it maybe???

  7. Gorgeous Pictures Meg and that amphitheater looks amazing. I would love to go to an event there on a summer evening. Did you get to see anything there while on your trip.
Also, I love the idea of having the calories listed on your receipt, That is genius! And I will definitely be trying the whole waffle thing instead of a bun. I wonder if that is healthier?

    1. I doubt the waffle is healthier than a bun. And notice, the waffle sandwich place did NOT list the calories because there was probably close to 1000 in that sucker hahaha! We did not see any shows and the amphitheater on our trip but that would have been awesome.

I can't wait to hear more about your thoughts on marijuana as medicine - I find it a fascinating way to use something to help the body!!!

  10. I have never seen a receipt that has calories and such listed - that is kind of crazy! What's the point in listing them there if you have already ordered and paid?!

I'm looking forward to your post on medicinal marijuana. I don't really know the ins-and-outs of how it works for seizures, but I am in full support of marijuana being legalized for both medical and recreational purposes. I don't use it today, but I have indulged in edibles before and hardly feel like a hardened druggie criminal who is now on the path towards harder drugs.

    1. I am pro recreational use as well! I will try to write the post soon. I have so many thoughts in my brain, I need to get them out!

  11. That's so weird that the museum didn't post that the Aztec exhibit was extra. Usually they're almost pushy about getting you to buy the extra tickets. I love the museum, though. And I love Matthews-Winters and Red Rocks -- though I've STILL never been to a concert at Red Rocks. Mostly because I am poor. :)

    1. Maybe it's because we waltzed in 2 hours before closing and they thought "Those yahoos will never have time for that" haha

  12. I've never seen a receipt with calories and macros listed on it- so weird, and I don't think I would want to know that information when I am out to eat! That waffle sandwich looks delicious! I may have to try and make a waffle breakfast sandwich tomorrow morning.

    1. I'm with you- if I'm out to eat, chances are I am going to eat whatever I want- who cares about the calories! A BREAKFAST waffle sandwich sound yummy. Stick an egg and some bacon on that sucker.

Looks like your trip is just getting even more awesome! Enjoy!
