The Musical That Didn't Happen...

Last week was musical week, which is always the most stressful time of year for me. My 3rd and 4th graders rehearsed all week and were to perform two shows. One show was an assembly during the school day for the rest of the students and teachers in our building. The other show was to happen in the evening during our Open House. The students were SO EXCITED! Parents, grandparents, siblings, aunts, uncles... they were all coming to see their student perform!

I was excited for our Thursday night show for two reasons. First, I was excited for the kids to show their families their performance. Second, I was excited for the whole thing to be OVER so the stress would disappear. I was counting down the hours...

On Thursday, Paul and I arrived at the school a little before 5:30. At 5:30 sharp, the doors opened. Parents went to the gym to grab a seat for the show and students headed to their classrooms to line up in their positions.

Ten minutes later, we evacuated. Something was wrong with the HVAC system and there was smoke coming out of two of the heaters!

Everyone flowed into the parking lot. Parents were coming up to me and asking if they were still going to perform the show. I didn't have any answers for them as I'm not the one who makes those decisions.

Fire trucks from three different towns came. We waited outside for about 45 minutes until the principal announced that the show and Open House was cancelled for the night but it would be rescheduled.

UGH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The stress is not over! We have to go through this all over again on Thursday! I'm really glad they rescheduled but I wish we just could have performed the show the night we were supposed to.

No matter how stressful these past few days were, I have to say I work with the best people! They are all there to support me whether it's by performing in the show, helping get kids on and off the stage, or giving me flowers. I couldn't work with a better staff!

My flowers from the staff.

That night I went home and ate cheese right off the block.

Did you ever have to evacuate your workplace?
What about when you were in school? Any emergency evacuations?

  1. Just a couple more days and you and the kids will be celebrating your achievements!

I don't think I've ever had to evacuate for anything more than a false fire alarm. However, the other day a transformer blew on the street outside my office. All I heard was a loud bang and I saw sparks through the window. I thought I was shot or we had been bombed! My heart was beating a million miles a minute!

    1. Omg my mind would've jumped right to a shooting or a bomb as well. That must have been so scary. What is a transformer?

    2. Hmmm technically speaking .... i have no idea. It's a box connected to the power lines! It must do something with the electricity current? Or that's my best guest!

  2. I am so sorry that happened, Megan! You totally are justified in eating cheese right off the block. I am sure it will all go great this week!

  3. I work in an academic library so we have regular fire drills, which are lovely breaks in the summer and down right mean in the winter. Occasionally we will be evacuated due to power outages too.

Sorry your stress isn't quite over.

  5. Wow!! So, now you still have to deal with that stress!! ouch! sorry!

Eating cheese right off the packaging seems like the best answer!

We had to evacuate my office a few times, the three that jump to my mind are when somebody found fleas in the public computer area, another when they were closing front street because it was in the verge of flooding and last when there was no water in the entire block (we were told that it was a safety issue to have people in the building without water, because it was a fire safety issue).

    1. Yes! This is why teachers need summers off bwahahahhahaa!

Eating cheese right off the block is the best. It's mostly fat and protein right? We all need more protein and honestly some more good fat too.

Yes no water IS a health hazzard. We were dismissed from school once for that.

  6. Oh man, that sucks. I can totally relate to all of this. Even though I love my Glass City race, I was just so completely overwhelmed with "giving out information" about the event in the last week, I could not wait for it to be done! We've had a few chess matches and band performances rescheduled due to weather this year. I know a lot of work goes into it, so I'm very happy they get rescheduled, but there's always that risk that something else is already scheduled for the new day and you can't make it. Bummer! Hope it goes much better the second time around.

    1. Thank you for reminding me that it is really important for families for events to be rescheduled! I *know* that, because I saw the look of sadness on my students' faces, but it is always nice to hear it too. <3 You're right, this is a good thing.

  7. I had to evacuate my building in Boston once because some electricians accidentally crossed some wires. They actually ended up in the hospital because of the shock, and we had to walk down 18 flights of stairs.
