Our Toilet Broke & My Dad is MacGyver

On Thursday night, our toilet broke. It stopped filling with water and we couldn't flush it.

Paul said there was probably one flush left and that he'd let me have that flush so I wouldn't have to use the basement bathroom in the middle of the night when I would inevitably wake up to pee. (I was scared if I got up and walked all the way to the basement that I wouldn't be able to fall back asleep.)

Well, of course when I went to the bathroom in the wee hours of the morning (get it, wee!!??) the toilet wouldn't flush.

THAT JUST GROSSES ME OUT SO BAD!!!! All I did was pee, but I just could not relax and almost couldn't fall back asleep knowing there was an un-flushed toilet in the house.

The next morning, I felt very uncomfortable putting my make up on in the bathroom. Just knowing what was in the toilet gave me the heebeejeebees!

Luckily, Paul asked my dad, aka MacGyver, to come over and fix it.

I wanted the toilet flushed before my dad got there, so I Googled how to do it (I knew there was a way to do it by dumping water into it!) and let Paul know that it could be done.

This is a picture of our texts.
I do not know how to take screen shots!!!

It takes a gallon of water. Damn. I use so many gallons of water every day just going to the bathroom. It's crazy.

In case you wondered what was wrong with the toilet, it was the fill valve. We also needed a new flapper. Don't ask me what the heck those things do...

Well, our toilet flushes and all is right on Cumberland Road again. Thanks, Daddio!

Did you ever blow up a toilet and then it wouldn't flush?
Have you ever fixed a toilet?
Does your dad still help you even though you are a grown ass adult?

  1. Rick is our MacGyver--he has fixed our shower, our toilet, our garbage disposal (2x), my bike, my bike on the trainer, etc...the list goes on and on. And a lot of the house repairs he has learned on This Old House because he loves to watch that on weekend mornings :) Yay PBS!

    1. It must have to do with the name "Rick". Even the actor who plays MacG is Richard Dean Anderson. ;) It's nice you have a live in Macgyver in your house! Paul is certainly not MacGyver but he has other strengths!

    2. Yeah, I think it must be...gotta love those Ricks! Paul is great at PC stuff. Rick helps me w/ HW but when it comes to apps/SW he's clueless. We can't all be good at everything, right?

  2. My husband is my MacGyver - he can, as he says, "jury-rig" anything! He has saved us a lot of money over the years! On a side note, I used to babysit a family all through high school (I loved the kids) that didn't flush every time - it was extremely unsettling for me. The mother was very crunchy granola and she didn't want to waste water. I found it gross!
    have a good day!! Kristen

  4. So funny as we just went to Lowe's yesterday and bought new flusher handles for our toilets!
Living near by parents definitely has its perks, right?

  5. Dad to the rescue!! I also can't stand it if a toilet isn't flushed, doesn't flush.

One time, when we were moving offices at work, we had a temp. work space that only had one toilet. I had a really, really upset stomach .... like really upset. And then it wouldn't flush. That was one of the most embarrassing experiences in my life. Just absolutely horrifying!

  6. There are lots of times I wish my dad lived closer so he could do MacGyvery things for us... or gross things, like the time I found a dead mouse and my husband was out of the country. My dad at least talked me down from the ledge I was on when I found it.
