Getting Crafty!

Don't worry, this is NOT turning into a craft blog!

In fact, I am not artistic/crafty at all. I'm definitely musical... and I suppose I am artistic in the fact the I used to do choreography for musicals. But in regards to creating something with my bare hands... let's just say I did not inherit my mom's talents.

I suppose crafts just don't interest me! Okay, so then where is this whole thing going?

Well, one of my piano students made me the absolute BEST Christmas ornament this year!

She took an empty light bulb craft ornament and filled it with glitter, a mini Christmas tree, some holly berries, and the words "piano" and "cats" that she created by gluing together alphabet beads.

Because seriously, what else in life is more important than piano and cats!?

She glued a cotton ball on top so the glitter couldn't come out. Genius.

Seeing her beautiful ornament inspired me to want to create some ornaments of my own! They would be wonderful Christmas presents (for next year!) for my students and my family!

A couple days after Christmas, I visited Michael's and A.C. Moore to get the supplies I would need.

A.C. Moore had a ton of empty ornament bulbs!

I got three different styles.

And a fourth style at Michael's, which I'm not sure I will use because the way it snaps shut probably won't prevent the glitter from coming out. If I use these ornaments, I will probably have to think of another idea of what to put in them... Suggestions?

I got two types of glitter/filler...

Stars, alphabet beads, and fancy silver thing-a-ma-bobs...

Bells, poofy red balls, teddy bears...

 Mini Christmas trees!

I even got a hot glue gun for $2.09! I am an official crafter now! The funny thing is, I had to go back to the store later on in the day to buy the glue! Rookie mistake!

**Note: All of these items were either 50% or 70% off! Please do not thing I spent $2.99 on two mini teddy bears...

I'm so excited to make these ornaments! How, how, how will I do it without getting cat hair stuck in the hot glue?

Update: I made a couple of these ornaments already and the first thing that went wrong was that the hot glue was not strong enough to hold the letters together. So Paul got me GORILLA hot glue which claims to be 5xs stronger. So far, so good!

Do you consider yourself "crafty"?
Any ideas for these ornaments that I haven't considered?

  1. Well considering all the craft supplies you've purchased I would say you are now officially a "crafter"..haha!
Looks like a fun project! I always get inspired AFTER the holidays to make things and think "oh, i'm gonna do that next year" but I rarely do. Good for you for head start. Will you post pictures of the finished products?

    1. Yep I will definitely post pictures! And I really hope I keep up with this! I didn't spend a ton of money on the supplies because they were so discounted, but I still don't want it all to go to waste!

  2. I am so proud of you! I would not consider myself crafty (although I am not opposed to doing crafts) I would consider myself artsy. I love doing mixed media art! It's so good for my soul!

    1. What is mixed media art? I think I heard of that before... I would not call myself artsy OR crafty but now that I have a hot glue gun I feel legit.

  3. Omg! I'm getting anxious that I missed the Michaels Christmas sales !!

Those look like great deals you got ! Check out Pinterest for some ideas.

I'm not crafty, but I like making ornaments for my family for Christmas. I like to put random things on the ornaments, things that can't be found in the store.... like sand and shells from the beach.

Post picture of what you make !!

    1. I will definitely post pics. I made a couple of cute ones so far. Hey that is a great idea with the sand and shells. Next time we go to CO I can look for a cool rock or something to put in.

  5. When the boys were little, we'd do an ornament craft every year. I know we would have been all over this one...

  6. That ornament is SO CUTE and so thoughtful! What a great gift. I can see why you want to replicate it for next year!

I am hit or miss with crafts. My stuff either comes out awesome or like a pile of crap!

I am wondering about the cat hair as well! While we were clearing out the fridge in our old apartment this weekend I found quite a few cat hairs in there! How did cat hair get onto the top shelf of the fridge?! It's a mystery!

    1. Girl, we get cat hair EVERYWHERE. I feel like it is part of the air and I just breath it in at this point.

  7. That lightbulb craft is super cute and so thoughtful! I was craftier when I was younger. I have a glue gun somewhere. I used to make door wreaths for all 4 seasons. I volunteered for Thing 2's class Valentines Day party this year and need to come up with a craft, snack and game. Maybe I'd better head to Michaels...

    1. Wreaths would be a great gift as well! Or just something nice to have for yourself!

  8. I am not even a little bit crafty. These ornaments look simple, but I'm sure I'd find a way to screw them up. They're super cute, though, so I hope they work out for you!

    1. Thanks girl! They must be really simple because I haven't screwed anything up too bad yet. I am taking my time, which is really hard for me to do.
