Friday 5!

Today is my last day of school with students. I must be so excited because I woke up at 3:41 to feed my cats and never fell back asleep. Yippy skippy!

#donttalktomrscooneytoday.

I go back to work on Monday for an in-service day, but after that, it is all sunshine and roses until mid August when I go back and begin my 12th year teaching. I can't believe it. Am I that old??? I am.

I do continue to teach private piano lessons during the summer, but for the most part, I get to relax get my shit together, hang out with Paul and the cats, and do things I don't have the energy for during the school year... like shave my legs and make smoothies.

Let's talk about some of the fitness activities I am excited to try and/or revamp this summer!

1. Lifting! The Hansons training plan does not factor in the fact that I like to lift 2-3 times a week. With school being in session, I have only had time to squeeze it in once a week- twice if I am lucky! When school is out, I will have time to lift 2-3 times a week like I want to.

2. Walking! I have been slacking on my weekend walks with my girlfriends. Sometimes the weeks are so crazy that on the weekend I just want to hibernate. This will no longer be so in the summer!

3. Kayaking! Does this count as a fitness activity? Paul and I are dying to kayak down the Yellow Breeches Creek. Who wants to go with us!?

4. Hiking! Paul and I have some new trails we want to check out here in PA. I know we will be hiking a lot when we travel to Rocky Mountain National Park this summer!

5. New Running Routes! I am in the habit of just running loops around my neighborhood. I hope that I am motivated to explore some new running routes this summer!
Are there any fitness activities you are looking forward to this summer?

Teachers, is class dismissed for the summer yet?

Today, I'm linking up with the DC girls for Friday 5!

  2. The seniors here are done and graduating but the rest of the students have school until 6/17. I think thats because of all the snow days:) I love the feeling of the last day of school (even though I have always worked summers) and this is the first year Im not working in a school so its definitely going to be strange. Good luck getting through the last day and have a great weekend!

    1. There is definitely something magical about the last day of school. For teachers anyway. I'm not sure about parents! :)

  3. That is awesome that you are basically done. Yay for summer--sounds like you have so many fun things planned. I definitely cycle more in the summer because I am not an indoor cycling type gal and so in the winter it's kind of hard to get out there when we get snow. I am also looking forward to our weekly BBQs at Lake Loveland and pool parties with our friends. I don't think that counts as a fitness activity but I do love it so much!

    1. Yes the hard part is over! Two more classes and 1.5 days without students. Days without students are easy- and I get to take an hour lunch break- whoooohooo!!!

I say let's count pool parties as fitness. I wish I had more friends with pools. :)

  4. I just paid my monthly fee to my PT gym yesterday! I am so excited to get back there.

There are definitely some new to me trails I want to check out this summer but they will be "one and done" trails since each of them are an hour or so away.
We need to make plans to get together at R B Winter Park and do the trails and the beach!

  5. Our schools are out here... I found out the hard way yesterday when all the kids were at the pool, yikes. So much for a peaceful lunch by the neighborhood pool.

My favorite summer fitness activity... laying by the pool, haha. And the occasional dip in the pool. I tried stand up paddleboarding last year and that was fun but way harder than it looks. Good luck with getting back into lifting!

    1. I would love to lay by the pool! I wish they had an adults only pool where I live. :)

    2. Ha! I wish we had more adults where I live to warrant that... we live in a subdivision full of families and I didn't want to deal with screaming children yesterday while eating lunch. Fortunately the kiddos will all be going to camp or grandma's or summer school or whatever soon, so they won't ALL be at the pool, but school just got out this week so they were.

  6. I bet the cats were quite happy to be fed that early. I do miss summer break, but I don't know what I'd do without work. Eventually, I always hit that point on summer break when I was bored.

    1. Oh man I never get bored! There is always something to do.

  7. Ah, fack. I hate it when I wake up early like that and can't get back to sleep. I'm excited for you and your newfound free time though, so that you can cross a bunch of fun stuff off your list! I don't like new running routes because I don't like deviating from my routine. I'm so dull.

    1. There is definitely something homey about my neighborhood route. Like today I was kind of depressed and stuff since I was up so early, but the fact that I had a good podcast and my little running route made me happy. I just can't be doing 10-16 miles in my hood. I need to GET OUT THERE.

  8. Way to go on another year done!!

When are you going kayaking? That sounds like a lot of fun! do we need to own a kayak to come along?

Where are you hiking? We are planning to finally drive to Ohiopyle Park this summer, no more excuses!

    1. We don't have kayaks either! Paul wants to take me to King's Gap- have you been there? My brother goes to Ohiopyle all the time and loves it.

    2. Yes, I have been to King's Gap, and it's a beautiful park! We did about 4 miles there last summer, and loved it! We saw deer in the path, and that day there was a bluegrass concert. There is a small country store right out of the park, we stopped there for ice cream, check it out if you get a chance.

Have you ever hiked Flat Rock Trail on Colonel Denning? if you haven't, check it out.. the view on top is breathtaking.

    3. Oh I love little country stores, thanks for the tip! No never been to Colonel Denning but my friend used to be a park ranger there! I would like to go. :)

  9. School's out and it was a teensy bit sad for me as I wasn't there (I left teaching mid year in December). I was (<----eeek! past tense!!) an English teacher for 8 years and now stay home with my kids.

I've never been kayaking. I'm not a big water person. The fact that I did a tri is pretty unbelievable, lol!

    1. I remember that you left teaching. I'm glad you get to be home with your kiddos. :) I think it is funny you say you are not a big water person. That must be why you decided to do R2R2R!!!

  10. I want to just come spend the summer kayaking, hiking and going to the gym with you. Can you write me a note I can give my boss?

    1. YES!!!!! My note says this:

Kristina Allen to PA during the month of July. -Mrs. Cooney

      :)

  11. I've seen lots of "hurray school is out!" posts this week :) We have been considering purchasing kayaks lately for flat water kayaking in a lake we have nearby, but hiking and backpacking are my number one summer fitness activity!

  12. I have read so many posts about people planning to go kayaking - I guess it's going to be the thing to do this summer!

    1. A lot of people kayak here in Central PA. When I take my husband fishing we always see them floating down the creek and it looks so relaxing. :)

  13. I am so looking forward to kayaking! I took some extra Fridays off this summer so I can kayak with my friends. Now to get those dates on the calendar.
