The story of our Halloween candy!

In all my years as an adult, I never handed out candy on trick or treat night. Paul has wanted to, but he worked twilight shift and was never home for trick or treat. Even though he hasn’t worked that shift in a couple years, we still haven’t done the whole trick or treat thing. That’s mostly my fault. After teaching kids all day long, I really don’t feel like spending two hours of my evening handing out candy- even one day a year! Call me a Halloween Scrooge if you want!

A couple weeks ago we were feeling festive and decided, “Hmmm, maybe we will do trick or treat this year!” We bought a huge bag of candy filled with different kinds of Twizzlers, Jolly Ranchers, and Bubble Yum.

Fast forward to a couple nights later. I was craving sugar- CANDY to be more specific. We don’t normally have candy in our house, but I remembered the huge bag we bought for trick or treat. I could eat just a couple pieces and it would be no big deal. Paul could have some too. Yes, it was a wonderful solution.

But then a couple nights later we had a few more pieces of candy. And the next night some more. It got to the point where I was like, “Eh, we probably won’t even do trick or treat anyway…”

But it's okay, because now we have this huge bag of candy that we just eat a little bit out of at a time!

Sorry trick or treaters...

Do you hand out candy on trick or treat night?

  1. We don't only because we aren't home--we attend a friend's Halloween Party. We used to and loved it but I would have to hide the candy from Rick because he would eat it all before the actual night!

  2. Oh no! I always hand out candy because I remember how disappointing it was when people did not answer the door when I was a kid. This year the Caveman will be out of town and Thing 1's going to a party and I offered to take Thing 2 and her friends trick or treating so I've got nobody to man our door!

    1. That is the precise reason I feel guilty- because I did trick or treat as a kid so I should pay it forward!

  3. We hand out candy. My oldest will be manning the door (think, one for me, one for them...). In years past when I have been out with the kids, I just leave a big bowl of candy on the doorstep with a sign that says, "Gone 'treatin! Please take 2." We have always returned to some candy still left in the bowl. I always figure some kid will dump the whole thing in her bag and call it a day--but the kids haven't so far! I haven't bought any candy yet, because I know I will eat it all!
Interesting NH fact, we don't trick or treat on Halloween. It is always around Halloween (this year, Friday). We don't have sidewalks or street lights, and most small towns, only have one police car (if any). So all the nearby towns "share" officers on Halloween to keep the kids safe, so each town does a different day...

    1. And see now I know for the future that I will eat it all so I will have to do what you do- wait until like the day before! That is so nice that the trick or treaters are honest and don't dump your bowl!

Our townships in Central PA also do not do it on Halloween. It is normally on a Thursday night around Halloween. Now, different townships will do it on different days (not sure why) but then people get their panties in a bunch because some kids go trick or treating on two nights! Who cares? At least they are not inside playing video games!! :)

  4. Hahah! Adam and I have done this exact same thing before. In fact on Halloween we decided to go out for dinner so we didn't have to feel guilty when kids knocked on the door. We then came home and had a couple more pieces of candy for dessert.

If cats came around trick or treating I would hand out chicken :).

  5. HA HA HA! I love your honesty. This is wicked. I have a hard time handing out candy because we have so many kids that my time is taking up with shlepping one or two of them around the neighborhood. The last time I handed out candy was when i was a teenager. My parents grounded me from hanging out with friends that night so I had a pout and dumped fistfuls of candy in kids' bags just to get it over with. I was a treat. HA.

  6. We never keep candy in the house either unless it is for Halloween. We don't buy too much bc we don't want any of it left over bc if it is we just end up eating it. And each yr our trick or treaters become less and less.

    1. Aw that is sad! Yeah leftover candy can be dangerous...

  7. Why don't you go and buy more at Walmart? They have cheap prices and I think watching the little kids get so excited and nervous to say "T or T" is so cute. Of course, the teenagers aren't always as fun but it's a nice thing to do for the neighborhood!

    1. I completely agree but for some reason every year I don't make the effort or make and excuse. It really boils down to be around kids all day long and loving my "me time" at home. I know it's only one day a year, so apparently this need runs deep!

  8. My husband go all out for Halloween. We decorated the outside of our house into a "haunted house" and hand out full size candy bars to all of the kiddos. I loved getting candy when I was a kid, so I'm just paying it back I guess. :) I tend to eat some of the candy before Halloween too! No shame.

  9. We hand out candy but usually I do it because Matthew stays at the office to avoid all the kids LOL. We will get around 100 or more trick-or-treaters because my house is on the same street as the local elementary school. Lola goes bonkers!!!!

  10. Matt HATES getting up every couple minutes to answer the door. I want to just set candy out and let the kids help themselves. I like Halloween, and I want to provide for the kids who are like I was and can't eat most normal candy, but I do wonder if anyone really LIKES handing out candy!

  11. We did trick or treat the first few years we were married and to tell you the truth every time kids rang the door bell the dogs would go nuts and it drove us crazy! Our neighborhood is not very "walker" friendly so we don't get many trick or treaters these days now anyway and that does not bother me one bit! Besides, trick or treat candy has become so expensive!
