Weekend Wrap Up: Cheetahs and Primates and Zebras- OH MY!

The week seemed to drag on forever, so by the time Friday rolled around,
I was so excited to relax and do something fun with my hubby!

After work, we headed up to the teeny tiny town of Gratz for the 141st Annual Gratz Fair! Gratz is about 25 minutes from my hometown, and the fair is a pretty big deal around those parts. All the schools in the area even close early on Friday for "Gratz Fair Day"!

The Gratz Fair is a great place to people watch. It is also a great place to inhale secondhand smoke. Seriously, I smelled more smoke on Friday night than I smelled in the past year.

The tractor may as well have been the mascot of the fair!

Unfortunately, the insulting clown was not there! Next year.

We ate amazing food. We shared the best hot sausage we ever had in our lives. Seriously. It was the. best. hot. sausage. we. had. in. our. lives. We also shared the famous Williams French Fries. For dessert- an Amish donut and homemade peanut butter ice cream.

It was a great night!

On Saturday, we went to the Philadelphia Zoo! We got to see tigers, cheetahs, all kinds of primates, giraffes, rhinos, hippos, zebras... of course we skipped the reptile building.

The Philadelphia Zoo: For just $55, you and your loved one

can get rammed by strollers all day long.

We couldn't wait to see the CHEETAHS!

It was really crowded, but I guess that is to be expected for a Saturday with nearly perfect weather. Also, it was Tantrum Day at the zoo. Every freaking kid was throwing a tantrum. I would love to go to the zoo on Adult Day. I wonder if that exists?

Oh! I forgot to tell you the best part about Saturday! Had an awesome tempo run that really made me feel confident about my 10k. I will tell you more about that tomorrow. But let's just say, I'm feeling really good about how I am progressing!

Sundays, whether I want them to be or not, are my days to do what I please. Paul watches football all day, so I am lucky if I can even snag him for a game or two of cards!

First, I went on a "long" run of 10 miles. It was pretty hot, but I was able to hit an 8:18 pace pretty comfortably. I just ran around my neighborhood a bajillion times. Nothing special.

Then, I went on an epic grocery store trip. But of course, there are at least three things I forgot and I will have to go again on Monday after work. Sigh.

After that, I met my sister-in-law at a park to hang out with her and my nieces. We were supposed to be watching my brother play in his soccer game, but it turns out, that is nearly impossible to do when there is a two year old and a newborn involved. I had fun chasing Ellie around, and she even let me snap a picture.

I can't leave you to get on with your Monday without sharing a few cat pics from the weekend... ENJOY!

We weighed them. Remember how they have been on a diet for almost a year now? Well, they haven't lost any weight. We can't get Chrissy below 18lbs and we can't get Jelly below 14.6lbs. We seriously count their calories EVERY FREAKING DAY. I don't know what else to do. It's too bad they won't use a harness. I could take them for walks...

Tell me something wonderful about your weekend!
Any tips to help my kitties lose weight?
Do you live near a good zoo?

  1. What a fun, fun weekend! I love when Rick & I have great outings planned (and the weather cooperates). We camped all weekend in Estes. The campsite does "Halloween" for every weekend in October. People go over the top decorating their campsites, there are crafts and candy bar bingo on Saturday afternoon and Saturday night is trick or treating around the campsite followed by a haunted hike and a dance for the kids at the pavilion. It is amazing. The weather was gorgeous and it seems every year people get more and more creative with their sites (a few people actually set up haunted houses). Very fun to be with our friends and their kids and Rick's brother/wife and our nephews. I am so glad we go every year because we get our Halloween fix for the year (on the actual Halloween night we go to a party but don't do trick or treating since we have no children).

    1. That sounds SO FUN! Do you guys camp in a tent? I'm glad the weather cooperated for you. :)

    2. It was so fun! We used to camp in a tent but about 3 years ago we got an 18 foot travel trailer that has beds, a "full kitchen", shower, heat and AC. Now, I am not sure if you technically consider this camping still but my days of tent camping are long gone!

    3. That is the only type of camping I would ever do! Heat, A/C, kitchen, and toilet/shower!

    4. OK, good. I just love having luxuries of home (I had wi fi up there, too).

  2. $55 for the zoo?! Holy cow are they really that expensive now?! Going to the zoo is definitely good birth control!

    1. HAHAHAHAHAHAHA yes it is! I mean, Paul and I looked at each other several times that day with that look in our eyes that said "omg aren't you glad we don't have kids???" It's $20 to get in and $15 to park... it adds up to $55 FAST! Apparently the DC zoo is FREE though so we might hit that one up.

  3. 1. I can't believe there is no picture of the homemade peanut butter ice cream, my favorite food in the world.

    2. Adult Day at the zoo is Thanksgiving Day. Actually Thanksgiving Day is "have the zoo to yourself day." In college my roomie and I didn't go home for Thanksgiving one year and ended up being pretty much the only people at the Miami Metro Zoo.

    3. Cecil has lost about a 1.5lbs since I put him on his diet in June. I used to give him 3 cans of wet food a day (breakfast, lunch and dinner, right?!) but the vet had me bring that down to two cans saying cats don't need lunch (apparently in the wild they would only hunt one or twice a day), so maybe if you give Jelly and Chrissy lunch you can slowly cut that out.

For exercise, I have no idea if this really helps or not, but I hold up a treat and make Cecil chase me around the house. After we've made a couple laps I give him the treat. Adam says he isn't working off enough calories to "earn" the treat but it's kind of a fun playtime activity anyway. Now that we have the cat tree I also make him jump around for his treats. Like in the middle of one lap around the house I'll put a treat on the top tier of the tree so he has to jump to get it!

    1. 1. It was dark by the time we had the ice cream so no pic!
      2. You and your roomie were geniuses!
      3. GO CECIL! Will you be my cat's personal trainer? They actually get FOUR meals a day, but it's divided up. Now that the windows are open, Christmas has been moving around a bit more. You know, check out the front window, check out the side window, check out the bedroom window...

    2. That's awesome! Cecil is food motivated but otherwise incredibly lazy, so he just camps out in front of any window and stays there for hours. If food didn't exist he would never move! :)

  4. Sounds like an awesome weekend! I can't wait to hear about your run!!! I haven't been to any type of zoo since 5th grade when we went to the Bronx Zoo. I would love to go again!!!!

    1. I have never been to that zoo, in fact, I don't think I have ever been to the Bronx!

  5. That fair sounds something very similar to our County Fair. I can't do it, so I skip it. Even though the people watching is phenomenal!

I do actually live right by a zoo. It's so normal to me that I have never really thought about the fact that most people do not have a zoo, especially in a town our size. My friend and I ran past it on Thursday and it was "closed for a special event," which I am assuming was an adult night of some sort. There were lots of adults dressed up all fancy. I don't think we would've been allowed in.

Also, I have no idea why they outlawed the topless dancing in the parade. Buzzkills.

    1. We don't have a zoo in our town, but luckily we live within 2 hours of the Philly, DC, and MD Zoo. Pittsburgh Zoo is like 4 hrs away. I would love to go to that fancy adult zoo event!

  6. Stroller ramming sounds super fun! ;) LOL. Anytime I've been to a zoo it's been with 25 first graders. They don't throw tantrums but I'm freaked the entire time and counting heads like a mad lady! I did see a few tantrums at Wal Mart this weekend though....serves me right for stopping by there on a Saturday afternoon.

    1. OMG I could not imagine taking all of those students to a zoo!!! I would be scared as well and wouldn't enjoy anything. Wal Mart on the weekend- always a bad idea BUT is there ever a GOOD time to go to wally world?

  7. I think you're the first person I've met that does official "weekend wrap ups" :) I like it! Most people just dabble about their weekend or not, but it's never been a series.

    1. Thanks! I think it is a great insight into just my day to day life. That way if I talk running all week, there's a glimpse of what the rest of my life looks like on Mondays. :)

  8. Our zoo is pretty lame but they call it "The World Famous Topeka Zoo" - I guess it makes them feel better.
Years ago when we spent part of a summer in New Jersey, the boys and I spent a day at the Philadelphia zoo - we loved it!!!

  9. Haha! One of our cats has a serious beer belly. We're told that often happens to male cats after they get neutered. He's not otherwise overweight and we like to poke fun at his belly.

I have lived in Milwaukee for 3 years and only been to our zoo once - I ran a 5K there! I love animals and it's a shame we haven't been there for a real visit.
