When the universe doesn't want you to workout... (I locked my keys in my car.)

I don’t think the universe wanted me to work out last Tuesday. It was one of those days where despite perfect planning and my best efforts, shit happened! But I wasn’t going to let it deter me. I WAS GOING TO WORK OUT!

My plan for an epic work out started on Monday- a rest day. I don’t know about you guys, but whenever I have a rest day, I spend much of the day planning and dreaming about how I’m going to tear it up at the gym the next day. I even planned to get to the gym a half hour earlier than normal so I had extra time to rest between sets, stretch, and even do some plyos. My work out was going to be HUGE, no, EPIC!

Except I locked my keys in my car.

It was one of those things where as soon as it happened, I knew it happened. Luckily, my mom gets us AAA for Valentine’s Day every year, so I marched myself into Planet Fitness and used their phone to call. They told me someone would be there “within the hour”- they couldn’t be more specific than that. I know what you’re thinking- HOW AM I GOING TO GET MY WORKOUT IN!? I CAN’T STAND OUT IN THE PARKING LOT BY MY CAR FOR AN HOUR WAITING FOR AAA!

I decided I would lift for a half hour and then take my workout outside. Luckily, I had my jump rope in my gym bag. My plan was to do jump rope intervals beside my car until AAA showed up. Well, after 6 sets, my freaking jump rope broke! Seriously, all signs were pointing to me not getting in a workout that day!

AAA arrived soon after that Whew. I wasted probably only 10 minutes of my workout due to my key fiasco. (And it was a pretty awesome workout, too!)

Take that universe!

Locking my keys in my car was bound to happen to me sooner or later because I have my car key separate from all the other keys on my ring. It’s just hanging loose. Why? I have one of those Chevy Cobalts that has been recalled due to an ignition switch failure that has caused 13 deaths, probably more. GM claims that as long as your key is not weighted down by other keys or a key chain, your ignition will not fail and you will not die. (You won’t die, but you will lock your keys in your car!)

I wish I could put my money where my mouth is and sell my Cobalt and buy a car from a company that actually puts the safety of their customers first… But my car is paid for so I am hanging onto it for as long as possible. It is nice not having car payments

Have you ever locked your keys in your car?
Has your car ever been recalled?

Has the universe ever been against you working out?

  1. I locked my keys in a running car because I'm a genius, it was running in my driveway in high school when I had to run inside and grab forgotten homework. Unfortunately, my car has auto locking and the wind blew the door shut so I was locked out while it sat running in my driveway until my parents could drive back home and unlock it.

  2. When I was first out of college I locked my keys in my car on purpose. It was cold out, so I thought I would go "warm my car up' before I went to work. The genius I am, I took the actual key off of the automatic door opener thing. This way, I could have the key in the ignition while I could lock my car and go back and sit in my apartment for a while. By the time I went back down to my car, I couldn't open the door with the keyless entry thing. Turns out your doors won't open if the car is running. I had to call my dad to bring me the spare key so I could manually open the door!

My current car is a push Button start and I don't even need a key but boy I keep losing the key fob thing. I doubt I would ever be able to lock that in the car, there are way too many safety features.

  3. I've locked my keys in the car once before...and was lucky that it was in a parking lot and triple A was already there trying to tow someone else. So once the guy had the car all hitched up I asked him if he could help me get back into my car. I've had many days like yours where I feel like the universe is telling me NOT to work out, though! Saturday, for one (can you say hail???).

    1. Oh yeah, I read your post about the hail and was thinking of my recent car key experience! Some people would look to these as excuses but we just see them as obstacles to overcome!

  4. Holy cow, GM's solution is a little bit weak! I can't believe that's legal!

I've locked my keys in the car so many times. I don't know where I'd be without AAA. Once time I locked my keys in the car with the car still running. One time I locked the keys to a rental car inside the car during a cross country road trip. One time I locked my keys in the car at my internship and missed a final exam at school... the list goes on.

  5. So sorry you locked your keys in your car but great job knocking out that workout. I couldn't help but laugh reading about your outside workout and then your jump rope broke. I'm with you "take that universe"!! My mom has a Cobalt as well and just had hers in the shop forever for them to fix the recall stuff.

Yes I have locked my keys in my vehicle. I never feel like the universe is out to get me, hope that's a good thing lol.

  6. My mom tells me I need to get not only an extra key but a magnet to hide it under my car. But I just haven't gotten my arse to the dealership to make a copy of the key hehe

  7. A long time ago Lola locked herself and the keys in the car when I got out to assess the situation...(we were stuck in a snow drift, lol). She hit the automatic lock switch while I was outside of the car!!!! I freaked, called my ex, who had the key and he had to come rescue me. Not ideal, LOL.

I drive a 2005 Honda Civic and I'm driving that baby to the ground. No car payment is sweet....You said it!

    1. Yup, who needs a spare key? All you need is AAA and a jump rope. :)

  9. TAKE THAT UNIVERSE! I would be the same way. I'd probably have AAA just sit outside and wait until I was done. ;-)
