I accidentally signed up for Pinterest.

Yesterday at work, I was trying to find some Peter and the Wolf flashcards to use for my kindergarten lesson next week, so I searched Google. I would rather just print some out than have to make them myself, you know? (Omg, what did teachers do BEFORE THE INTERNET??? How did they get materials for their lessons!?)

Google took me to Pinterest, where there was what looked to be some cool flashcards where you could match the character from the story with the instrument that played the character. I clicked on the flashcards, but Pinterest was making me sign in before I could get the flashcards.

I didn’t think I had an account, so I chose the “Sign in with Facebook” option. Oh well, it was for the good of the students, right? I was able to click on the flashcards, but the image actually took me to a website in which I was going to have to PAY to print the flashcards. Um, no. I closed the window and resigned myself to the fact that I’d be spending my plan period making flashcards on my own.

This was all first thing in the morning. By lunch time, I had several people FOLLOWING ME ON PINTEREST. WHAT THE HECK??? I guess I have a Pinterest account now.

But guys, I don’t understand Pinterest and I don’t care to. I have a blog and I have a Facebook account. I’m already on the computer enough, I don’t need something else to suck me in. So if you are following me on Pinterest, there is nothing to follow and there will never be anything to follow! I did it by accident! (Update: As of 2/28 my account has been DEACTIVATED. It looks like I was following 106 people. How did that happen!?)

This situation reminds me of when my dad signed up for Facebook. He did it just so he could join his cycling club's Facebook group and know when the group rides would be. A few days later, he said to me, "I have all these friend requests!" I said, "Dad, that's what Facebook is, a place for friends!" Dad replies, "But I don't want any friends!" Hahaha! (He now how 76 friends! Go Daddio!)
Do you use Pinterest? Explain it to me because I don’t get it.

  1. It took me awhile to understand pinterest but now I love it! I use it mostly to find and save recipes- its like another form of a search engine too and you can save things in an organized way (I never liked to "bookmark" things). Ive also been using it alot for home decorating ideas. I only just started following more people, but thats fun too because if you are bored you can just scroll through and see what other people are pinning! But I definitely get that its not for everyone!

    1. I am willing to concede that if someone forced me to use it for 3 days, I would probably LOVE it. I mean, everyone loves it. So why wouldn't I?

  2. I have pinterest and I do like it! I use it for mostly knitting and sewing ideas, but also for recipes and teaching ideas. I actually got a really cool print and assemble 3D virus model that my students made, it did take me to a separate website, but it was free! My husband uses pinterest for recipes also, but does it on my account.

The thing that I don't like about pinterest is that it does seem to automatically follow people for you and I hate the notification that your pin was repinned. Oh, I also hate that when something is popular and keeps getting repinned, that's all that shows up, I don't want to see the same crap over and over again.

Love/hate relationship, just like all social media...

    1. Aw, and here I thought people chose to follow me. It probably did it automatically! Before I deleted my account, I had to sign in and it said I was following 106 people. I didn't understand it.

  3. Nothing to do with Pintrest specifically, but "Sign in with Facebook" is the worst possible thing you could ever do on the internet. It has to do with security and have all your eggs (data) in one basket. Always make a separate account even if you are only going to use it once. Use a second Hotmail address for only junk account signups. -Little bro!

  4. I used to avoid Pinterest too. I signed up but then never used it, until I heard about it driving a lot of traffic to your site. It depends what you want out of your blog, but I was surprised to find how true that is.

    1. I think if I ever make the commitment to growing my readership, Pinterest would have to be part of it.

  5. I use Pinterest for fashion and house decorating ideas, recipes, and event planning. I found a lot of great ideas for my wedding (decor, colors, picture styles, etc.) and holiday parties (Halloween and Christmas decor, food, costumes, etc.). It's a great tool to use if you are looking for ideas and want a visual. When I first signed up, I was obsessed. Now I only use it every once in a while when I have a purpose or some down time.

    1. That is good that you reigned in your obsession and now use it for mostly productive stuff!

  6. Pinterest freaks me out. It's such a time-sucker and the copyright laws regarding the pins are really shady. I also don't like that it automatically makes you follow people and it's hard to unfollow. So yeah, I have an account, but I never use it!

  7. My dad is really into playing online poker and he signed up for Facebook because his friend said they could play a poker game together. A year later and my dad still has 0 friends and a bunch of friend requests .... he won't even connect with me on Facebook! haha

  8. I did not understand the need for Pinterest before I started using it ( nor did I see the purpose in Twitter and Instagram). Of course now that I have Pinterest I LOVE it. I agree that it is a HUGE waste of time sometimes and sometimes it is a great research tool. Most of the time it's just my guilty pleasure! Try it a while, you'll like it. Oh, PS, you should check out all the cat pictures. I bet you would like those.

    1. I have a feeling if someone forced me to use it for a few days I would LOVE it. If I ever do sign back on, it would have to be in the summer.

  9. I love Pinterest!!! In fact, dinner tonight is thanks to a recipe I found there this morning!!! I mostly pin recipes and workouts but I also have a blogging board, a business board and others. I use it the most when I'm reading blogs and want to pin things for later.

  10. I know that is what I am afraid of. I mean I am someone that has to read ALL the FB updates, ALL the blogs... I feel like it would cause me more anxiety. But that's on me.
