Weekend Wrap Up! (Part 1)

Happy Labor Day!
I hope you are having a nice long weekend.

Our school had a four day weekend to celebrate the holiday, so this wrap up will start on Thursday. It will also be broken into two parts because I get a little jibber-jabbery!

~ THURSDAY ~

Confession: I took a sleeping pill every night this week. It REALLY helps me fall back asleep after the cats wake me up in the middle of the night. I don't feel awake in the morning, but once I am up and moving around, I'm fine.

I did two deck of card workouts in the carport. It was so humid that I was SOAKED by the time I was halfway through my first deck!

I started incorporating some back stretches...

Work was so busy. I swear I had a meeting every morning this week! Overall, I am happy with the way the school year is going so far. I'm trying to do my best every day so that when I'm driving home and reflecting, I feel proud about how I did as a teacher and a colleague.

After school, I stopped by Dollar General to get some decorations for my niece's birthday party on Sunday. I almost bought a kiddie pool for her party! I think she will love the pin I got her!

Then I taught two piano lessons. I only have six students. I thought about taking on more students but ultimately decided against it. I am a better teacher at school when I know that when the work day is over, it is truly over and I can go home and relax. Having only six students for the second year in a row feels like I am "slacking" because for years, I have always had 10-12 students. But, it's important to have a work/life balance too! It would be hard to give up piano lessons totally. I love the one on one connection I can make with my students!

We barely had any food in our house so we had to be creative with dinner. I made us broiled sandwiches (mine on the right, Paul's on the left) and a box of fancy pasta.

Basil is the only thing in my garden that is thriving.

Then we went to DQ for Blizzards to eat while we watched Big Brother! We didn't go to DQ at all this summer! I got a small s'mores. My favorite is their apple pie, but they didn't have it. I think that one is only a seasonal thing.

When we got back, we watched the live eviction and Battle Back on Big Brother. I was tickled with who won the Battle Back on but I'm not happy with the way the season is going and which alliance keeps winning. However, last year I got my way when Josh beat Paul, so I have accepted that I can't always have the outcome I want with reality television!

Whenever I am sad, I watch this!

No sleeping pill Thursday night meant I never fell back asleep after Jelly woke me up at 3:30! How did I fill the wee hours of the morning? By blogging, CNN, and internet surfing.

My plan was to do a TON of cooking that day. Aldi didn't open until 9:00, which was utter bullshit. Around 7:30, I started chopping up veggies and making couscous and rice. There was a lot I needed from the store, but at least I got started.

Once all the stores opened, I ran my errands. For some reason, Aldi never has plain whole wheat pasta, so I had to get that at Weis. While I was up that way, I also stopped by Dollar General to pick up that kiddie pool. It was on sale for $4!

When I got home, it was time to COOK! I made...

 Stuffed Pepper Casserole

Couscous with peas, mushrooms, and onions.
(When we heat it up, we will sometimes add teriyaki sauce or sweet and sour sauce for more flavor.)

 Pasta salad!

Chicken salad made with Greek yogurt, chopped celery, almonds, crans, and lots of curry!

Spaghetti with eggplant, tomatoes, and onions

Around noon, we went to the gym. As soon as we were driving there, I noticed I was extremely tired and had a sore throat and headache. I did not feel like working out. I just wanted to go to bed. However, I did a short lifting session and ran three miles on the treadmill. I also stretched my back a lot. My back felt great during and after my run. I think the treadmill helps.

I wanted to just stay home because I felt like crap, but Paul and I planned to go to the movies. We went to see Crazy Rich Asians. I enjoyed the movie, especially because of the music, fashion, and cinematography. However, the story was a bit more chick flicky than I anticipated!

So this is going to sound weird, but when I feel sick (even if it's not in my stomach) my appetite gets weird. I know I just made a ton of food, but all the peppers and onion smells in my house made me NOT want any of the food I had just made. So I swung by Wendy's on the way home. I'm worth it.

I love Wendy's. They put just the right amount of mayo and ketchup on their Junior Bacon Cheeseburgers so that when it drips off, you can dip your fries in it!

Chicky legs! 1.99/lb!

I went to bed early. I felt like poo.

Come back tomorrow to check out the rest of my weekend!
Do you ever make broiled sandwiches?
Have you seen any good movies lately?

Tell me something fun you did this weekend!

  1. I love that Blizzard meme! We don't have dairy queen here, but the commercials come on TV and the Reese's one looks so good. Clay and I used to stop there on our way home from Columbia because they are all over the interstates.

I hope you can get some rest! I take melatonin most nights and it helps me. I take one before bed and then another when I wake up during the night, it's a 3mg gummy so I'm not tired the next morning.

    1. As long as I get a small blizzard, I only get down to the "why am I still eating this" part for the last couple bites. So I think a small is the perfect size for me!

I used to take melatonin and then I developed a bad case of diahhrhea with undigested food in it that lasted for about 3 months. When I stopped taking melatonin, the problems stopped. Now, it would have just been coincidence OR maybe it just doesn't agree with me!?

    2. Or I was taking too much, but I only took 6mg before bed.

  2. What is a broiled sandwich?
What time does Aldi usually open?

I am impressed with your make ahead meals. I've been really wanting to do that but I am worried about the longevity of them. Do you freeze them or put them in the fridge for all week? I was told that "leftovers" should not be in the fridge longer than 3 days so I worry about making things on Sunday and eating them on Thursday or Friday. I'd love to make ahead my school lunches if I can figure out a way to keep them fresh!

    1. So a broiled sandwich is when you make a sandwich open faced and just sizzle it up in the oven on the "broil" setting. I just called it a broiled sandwich because I didn't know what else to call it! Normally we make turkey, cheese, tomato, and bbq sauce broiled! Sounds good, right!?

Okay so our make ahead meals EASILY last over a week. I do not know who told you about the 3 day thing because for years I have been doing this and they easily last over a week. ONCE in awhile we won't finish something in time but when you open it you can tell it went bad.

  3. I know you mention liking broiled cheese and it always looks so crispy and good, but I don’t know how to broil either or what it really even is! Is it just to cook to a simmer?

Barbara got me that exact birthday pin on my 21st birthday hahaha I’m sure your niece will love it, I felt like a birthday princess.

The best thing I did this weekend was decorate for Halloween ...and also sleep in late every single day! Tonight will be a nightmare because I won’t be able to fall asleep early and then tomorrow will be a nightmare because I’ll be exhausted but it was worth it. It’s been rainy here all weekend so sleeping in has been easy! I love the sound of the thunder / rain and the overcast sky makes it feel like it’s still early!

    1. Does your oven have a "broil" setting? We have broil "high" or "low". It's just a setting.

LOLLLLLL at the bday pin! I would feel like a princess too no matter what age!

I saw your decorations and they look great! How are you able to sleep late when you get up so early during the week? I am unable to. I have been waking up at 6 or 7 on the weekends. Which of course is later than during the week but not a ton later.

I love the sound of rain and thunder too! My advice: Just stay up however late you want tonight and enjoy your evening. Youll just be laying in bed awake anyway!

  4. All your food looks so great....but so does the Wendy's! I am sorry you didn't get a good sleep and that you felt like crap. We had a full weekend -- wedding, Harley Ride and movie. We saw Mile 22 w/ Mark Wahlberg and LOVED it.

    1. Wendy's is the shit! You guys always do such fun stuff. Do you like weddings? Was it the traditional type of wedding?

    2. I loooove going to weddings! I love the ceremony and to listen to the vows and to dance and of course...the cake!! It was a backyard wedding. Very simple and nice!

  5. My weekend was a blur! (race recap to follow this week...) That must be a very nice feeling to know you are "off the clock" and not have students every night. I agree, you need some relaxation time too!

  6. I think I'm the only one who hasn't seen Crazy Rich Asians!!! For sure going this weekend. Did you read the book, it was hilarious! I couldn't get into the rest of the series, but my sisters really enjoyed it.

Were your broiled sandwiches super crunchy? I attempted to make a cake last week, and it spilled all over my over, and now I have to clean the broiler before I can use it again.

    1. I'm sure you'll love it. I did not read the book. I didn't even know it was a book until after I saw the movie.

The sandwiches don't usually get crunchy because I'm too scared I'll burn them! I feel like there is like a 30 second line between crunchy and burned!
