Books I read as a teen.

Recently, I signed up for a free month of Kindle Unlimited so I could read a seven book story arc from Sweet Valley High. I read these books as a tween. I can't say the SVH books are QUALITY reading, but they sure bring back a lot of nostalgia!

Reading these books brought back a lot of memories of the books I read as a kid/teen, and it inspired me to tell you about some of those books. The post got a little long, a few days ago I wrote about what I read as a KID. Today we're talking about what I read as a TEEN.

This is what I remember reading
as a TEEN...

Let's start with the BEST!!!

Christopher Pike Novels

I enjoy reading Christopher Pike novels so much. He has written adult novels, but his YA books are my favorite. I feel like Christopher Pike actually does QUALITY writing. Some of his novels are a little too sci-fi for me, so I prefer the ones without that element to it. I still own all of my CP books because I reread them every couple years. I think these were the first books I read where sometimes the story was told from a teenage boy's perspective. Most of the books I read up until now were from a girl's perspective.

Here are my favorite CP books and I recommend them to you... even if you are an adult! I'm listing them in order- my favorites first!

**I promise the actual books are NOT as cheesy as the art on the front covers!**

Fear Street

OMG DON'T HURT THE CAT!!!!

Not only did I enjoy watching horror movies, but I also liked horror books!  Fear Street was absolutely RIDICULOUS. The writing wasn't good but it was entertaining. It was pure fluff/cheese/smut/whatever you want to call it. I could plow through a Fear Street Book in an hour. Luckily, there were so many of them!

I owned a lot of the books but gave them away a couple years ago. I sort of want to read one again just to be reminded of how ridiculous they were! (OMG A FEAR STREET BOOK COSTS $4.99 on Kindle! What!!!???)

I never read Goosebumps as I was a little too old for those. My little brother did, though.

The Catcher in the Rye

For some reason my dad had this book and I decided to read it. I was HOOKED from the first page. Holden Caulfield is one of my favorite literary characters and The Catcher in the Rye is one of my absolute favorite books. I've reread it many times.

Sweet Valley High

If you used to read SVH, I HIGHLY RECOMMEND you going back and reading the following books from the series:

A Night to Remember
The Morning After
The Arrest
The Verdict
The Wedding
Beware the Baby-Sitter
The Evil Twin

... and if you haven't had enough drama...

The Return of the Evil Twin.

YOU WILL NOT REGRET THIS DECISION!!!

You can get these books on Kindle Unlimited. First month is free if you want to sign up, read them, then cancel.

I also found a hilarious website called Snark Squad where they recap books from our childhood... Sweet Valley High, The Baby-Sitters Club, The Boxcar Children, Goosebumps, etc... and they pretty much do a BRUTAL recap of each book! They are hilarious and if you read any of these books as a kid, you have to go over to Snark Squad and read what the ladies have to say! You will laugh out loud.
What did you read as a teen?

  1. Obviously I'm older than you, so what I read was quite different. The only book from your list I read was Catcher in the Rye, and that was for school.

I read LOTR, a lot. In fact, that's a recurring theme -- back then we didn't have all the books at our fingertips! Ludlum. The Thorn Birds. Maeve Binchy. A lot of Victoria Holt. Leon Uris -- for pleasure, and for school, I actually did an author's report on him in HS.

    1. LOTR is still really popular now but I have never tried them. I'm not into fantasy. Have you seen the movies and did you enjoy them?

  2. I never read any of these books, but I do remember my classmates reading R.L Stine and Christopher Pike. They never talked about them but I would see their books when we were at lunch.
I never read Goosebumps either but when I was in HS I made a sculpture of a head and painted it and Everyone said it looked like Carly Beth!
I actually think I should read a SVH book. Looks like an easy read. I wonder if I can get it on audio and listen to it while I'm on the trail?

    1. I had to google who Carly Beth was! I'm not sure if SVH is in audio format but they are VERY easy reads. You can read them in 1-2 hours.

  3. When I was in MS I remember reading a book about a Valentine's Day murder, and now I wonder if it was a CP book...I think the cover had yellow on it and there's a scene where a person is trapped under skating rink ice and dies. That's all I remember lol! But I think of that book often and wish I could find it again.

    1. I figured it was Fear Street because I knew it wasn't CP... so I did some digging and I believe it's called Broken Hearts! Check this out: http://fearstreet1.blogspot.com/2008/06/broken-hearts.html

  4. I never got into RL Stein but I looooooved Christopher Pike books! Remember Me was probably my fave, but I liked them all! It's so weird to see the covers of the books and have vivid memories of holding the books and reading them but having zero recollection of what the actual stories were about!

  5. I never read many of these books. I did read Catcher in the Rye. By high school I was kinda over reading unless it was for school... funny how school does that to you, makes you hate reading! To Kill A Mockingbird was probably my favorite book we read IN school, though.

    1. I hated reading the books they *made* us read in high school but I still loved reading my own books for pleasure. I very much hate being forced to read something. Even now, if I get a book out of the library and I don't like it, I will stop reading it. I never feel like I have to finish it or anything like that.
