Sprinting to the finish line!

When I was driving home from work on Friday afternoon, I felt absolutely exhausted! My voice was shot, my body was tired, and I was dripping with sweat.

I didn't feel like this all day, I thought to myself. I feel like I am absolutely spent. Thank goodness I didn't start to feel this way until the end of the day!

And then I realized... I conserve my energy throughout the work week, and then by Friday, I allow myself to expend whatever extra energy I have left! By my last class of the day on Friday I go hard until I have nothing left in me.

It reminded me of racing! We try to pace ourselves and conserve our energy so we can make it to the finish line without crashing... But I don't know about you, but when I see that finish line in sight, I sprint and bust out whatever I have left in me!

Do you try to conserve some of your energy so you make it to the end of the work week?
Do you sprint to the finish at the end of races?

  1. Sometimes I feel like that when I have a full schedule of patients to see. It's like running a race, only instead of counting down miles, I'm counting down patients.

  2. I always try to sprint to the finish line but never thought of that analogy related to work. But then again I've been tired all week since coming back from NYC. Every day this week I told myself I would nap when I got home and I haven't!

    1. Aw take a nap girl! You deserve it. Or will that mess with your sleep?

  3. You made me think! I'd say that I take each day one day at a time, mostly because I don't get a weekend--no breaks from my work! And I don't wake up trying to conserve energy because I have the most energy during the first half of the day and if I don't get everything done during that time then I won't get anything done at all! I tend to crash and burn after 2pm.

    1. I am more productive in the mornings at work, so I'm glad that's when my plan period is. When I had a plan at the end of the day, nothing would get done because I was just too tired.

  4. This is awesome, and a great way to look at it! I never thought about it! but because I'm a night person, I focus all my energy in the morning, and the rest comes later at night on its own.

Roger makes me do training to sprint at the end of races... so after long runs, he has me sprint the last .20 of the last two miles. It has taught me to conserve my energy for the end of a race.

    Thanks for this insight!

    1. I like Roger's idea of doing it for the last parts of the last TWO miles. If I ever have motivation to run long or sprint again, I will try that!

  5. Ha. I have zero sprint and finish kick. All slow twitch over here! I'm that person that people have their eye on to out kick at the end of races.

I understand your analogy. It applied to me so much in college. It's not as big of a deal as an adult because I work at home so the weekdays and weekends kind of blend, but in college I was always so exhausted by Friday that I'd come home and take a nap in front of the TV every Friday afternoon. It was like my little ritual!

    1. Really?? That surprises me that you aren't one to pick it up at the end!

  6. I try to conserve energy, but I'm not good at negative splits. There is something though about that finish line. I get a little kick to finish out the race.

    1. I try to do even splits but obviously that doesn't always work out!

  7. Hmmm is it weird that Wednesdays are my worst day? I always feel dead/drained by the end of Wednesday's, but then I pick up energy Thurs/Fri because I am excited that the weekend is around the corner. I think that's how I run races too. I start off with energy and usually pick it up at the end (unless it's super hot out), but in the middle i feel bogged down/tired.

Then again it's been so long since I've really raced that I could be remembering it wrong!

    1. You know that does make sense! Once wed is over, you're over the hump! My piano lessons are Tues and Thurs so unfortunately Thurs is my long as day and it never feels like I'm close to the weekend until friday.

  8. Sometimes the exhaustion of the work week hits me on the weekend. Kind of like how I feel more tired on rest days. I think when we finally allow ourselves to slow down mentally, it all catches up with us!

  9. I am always dead by Thursday and get a second-wind on Friday. But then I totally crash and recover all weekend long!

    1. Are you more or less tired with your new job? Or is it a different kind of tired?
