Weekend Wrap Up!

Family was the theme for this weekend! I love my family, and I am so thankful I got to spend to with so many people I don't get to see very often!

The highlight of my Friday was spending the evening at my parent's house with family. We ate, we talked, we laughed, and it was glorious!

Nieces Ellie & Clementine, Brother Tyler, Grandma

My brothers and I with Cousin Nick and Grandma

Paul and I tore up Planet Fitness. Seriously. It was in shambles by the time we left. (That's my overly dramatic way of saying we had a great lifting workout!) Some guy even stopped to say to me, "You workout HARD!" HA! Like, did he mean I workout hard FOR A GIRL? Would he have stopped a GUY to tell him he worked out hard? No, probably not. YES I AM HIGH HORSEY ABOUT THIS.

The rest of the day was spent celebrating LOVE at my cousin's wedding! My cousin Jordan married his long time girlfriend, Kristy. It was a beautiful evening! I had a great time hanging out with my family!

I was in a really bad mood today. My foot felt fine, so I went for a 4 miler. It went well. But even a run wasn't enough to boost my grumpy mood. The only thing productive I did was do some major grocery shopping...

Zero makeup, zero bra, zero fucks.

I cuddled my kitties a lot because I figured that would make me feel better. Most of the day was spent on the couch being entertained by TV, puzzles, or the internet. What a blah day.

Then it was all put into perspective. I found out via Facebook that a former high school life skills student of mine (I taught him music) died. I ugly cried, screamed "WHY?", and wondered what the hell the meaning of life is and why it is so cruel and why it sucks so bad. I can't think of anything else to say except I just wish with all my heart that this hadn't happened. Life fucking sucks sometimes. And it's not fair.

How do you try to cheer yourself up when you're in a bad mood?

Teachers, how do you cope when you hear devastating news about a student?

Tell me something fun you did this weekend!

  1. I am so very sorry to hear about your former student. It makes no sense and there are no words to make it any better. Life can be unfair--as you know we are approaching the 2 year anniversary of my brother in laws very sudden death when he was only 43. I watch my sister and my nephew navigate the nightmare and it just reminds me each day how very precious our life is and we really are never promised tomorrow. Keep your chin up, Megan.

    1. It is definitely an ugly reminder how fleeting life is! I wish you and your family didn't have to have that reminder!

    2. Thank you, Megan. Through the heartache and sadness I have learned a lot and for that, I will always be grateful. It never hurts to have a wake up call to help you prioritize and remember not to sweat the small stuff!

  2. I'm really sorry about your former student dying. That HAS to be really difficult to deal with. I always think about parents, grandparents, siblings, and friends when a kid dies, but you know, it has to have a really profound affect on their teachers as well- because teachers spend a lot of time with some kids (esp. depending on their age).

It looks like you had a good weekend otherwise, with tons of family and friends time. I think it's funny about tearing up Planet Fitness... I go there too and that gym has a weird reputation but it's super clean. I like it!

    1. It does affect just so many people. And not that any one death is easier to understand than another, but this was a very sudden accident so no one was prepared at all. It just makes me sick with sadness.

PF DOES have a weird reputation!! I'm glad you like it the way we do. I agree, it is very clean lol. I am always on the floor w/o a mat doing ab stuff in between sets of weights and I don't really feel gross about it! The staff is very nice (at least ours is) and it's TEN FREAKING DOLLARS A MONTH. I just don't understand why someone WOULDN'T go there, except of course if they needed things not offered, like a pool or group fitness classes or something. :)

  3. What a shame about your student. His poor parents. You are right, something like that always puts things in perspective.

  4. My dad is a college professor, and one year a student of his died only two years after graduating. It's tough, and it doesn't make sense.

    1. Oh that is so sad. :( So many people die young when they have so much life left to live.

  5. You have such a big family! I've always wanted a big family but I'm an only child, my dad is an only child and my mom has just one sister who never had any children. My step-siblings are MUCH older than me and we couldn't be more different anyway. I would never choose to hang out with them for a lot of reasons. All of that is to say I am jealous of your big family gathering! And your new cousin made such a beautiful bride!!

im very sorry to hear about your student.

    1. Kristina, if you ever come to Colorado, we will take you to a big family event. I have 2 sisters and only one nephew on my side but Rick has a VERY huge family and lots of nephews (one niece...who then has 4 kids of her own). Then add in their wives, significant others, etc. it's a legit party when we all gather together. I think you would be both happy and slightly scared --- LOL. But one thing is for sure, you wouldn't go hungry. The amount of food is always ridiculous!

  7. Wow, so sorry to hear about your student. Do you know what the cause was?
As you may know, I worked with kids that CF and eventually each one passed. That was hard.

You have such a beautiful and loving family. I can understand why you enjoy spending time with them!

    1. I thought of you yesterday when I found out the news. I actually almost texted you. I found out that he drowned in the community pool. :( I hate even typing it because it's so horrible.

  9. That guy at Planet Fitness...tsk. You know, clearly he thought he was giving you a compliment and wouldn't even understand your annoyance at him saying something, because men are like that sometimes. But you're right, he wouldn't say it to another guy. You don't need his encouragement or congratulations to know you kicked ass at your workout.

I'm sorry to hear about your former student. I've had a couple pass in the last few years and it never gets easier. Once they're your student once, they're your student forever.
