New Toys!!!!

Related Posts Plugin for WordPress, Blogger...I got new dumbbells! I am so excited! I have been wanting them for several months now, and after searching for used sets, we finally bit the bullet and went to Dick's. I can't believe how much dumbbells cost, but at least they should last forever!

Remember how I complained that my Powerblock weights broke while I was using them? A ten pound attachment to the weight went crashing onto the floor after I did a set of chest press. It was terrifying and I was really lucky I wasn't hurt! What if it had fallen on one of the kitties, who like to hang out and get in my way when I'm exercising? It would have been horrible!

Well, that incident was the kick in the butt I needed to finally get more quality weights to use at home. Up until now, I used 8s, 10s, 15s, and I set the Powerblocks to 25s. But I really needed more of a variety and I needed something other than the Powerblocks, which truthfully always made me nervous.

I told Paul if he wants to use my new weights, he has to sign them out. He said we could make a little swipe card for him to get into the guest room and use them. He's so funny!

Paul and I don't like to buy a lot of "stuff". We'd rather spend our money on experiences- like vacations, concerts... things like that. Now that's not to say I don't buy myself sunglasses, shoes, a new purse, etc- of course I do. But I am not a big shopper anymore and would rather save up money to go on vacation.

The dumbbells are "stuff", but they will help me stay fit and be happy, so it's a good investment. At $1 per pound, we hauled home $150 worth of health and happiness! (At least that is what I'm telling myself!)

After our big trip to Dick's, we stopped by TJ Maxx just to look around. I made an impulse buy on "stuff" on the way out...

Get it, JELLY BELLY????
He's so over me and my camera...

They taste like cocktails! So far I like the pina colada and peach bellini the best.

Do you buy a lot of "stuff"? What do you like to buy?
What kind of exercise equipment have you invested in?

  1. I am not a huge "stuff" buyer. I would rather spend my money on vacations and going to fun things like the theater, comedy shows, sporting events, movies. We have spent a lot on on health related items. I had a very nice treadmill that I used for 6 years (then sold since my PT and I decided no more treadmill for me), a rowing machine, a bike trainer, a weight bench and power tower, free weights, TRX bands, yoga mats, foam rollers/etc and for Rick the T-25 CD set. I also have a punch pass at the HS pool and our local rec club for the days I swim and finally my outdoor bike who I named Ariel :)

Good luck today at the doctor! Hoping you get a good update on your knee + hip!

    1. You have the home gym of my dreams. :) I love that you named your bike. I should name my dumbbells.

    2. Truth be told, it was supposed to be a man cave but I took it over (I have an art "studio" or rather corner in there, too). We are in the process of getting our garage made bigger so that can be the man cave :)

  3. Mmmm pina colada and peach bellini would be my faves too!

I go through ups and downs with shopping. Right now I'm in an upswing and am buying ALL THE THINGS but then I will go through a down period where I barely have motivation to go grocery shopping let along shopping for unnecessary things.

I'm surprised to see you have the weights in your cart. I would have thought you would just carry them all out in your arms! ;)

  4. I don't buy a lot of "Stuff" either because I like to save for vacations and races. There are people in my life that comment about how many races I do, or my "next" trip. But what they don't see is that I am not buying $150 purses, getting my nails done every week, or hanging out at Starbucks for $4 coffees. To each there own I guess. Congrats on the new weights. They will make a great addition to your workout routine!

    1. To each their own for sure! Some people spend $100 on purses, others on running shoes! One of the biggest things we do to save money is we don't go out to eat a lot. I mean, I loooove going out to eat, but it always ends up being $35-$40 easily. Now on vacation, we definitely go out to eat. :)

    2. Yes! $100 on shoes easily! We don't go out to eat a lot either cus I like to cook. However, we get take-out a lot more than we should.

PS. What does the rest of your summer look like?

    3. We are going to the beach for just a couple days in the beginning of Aug. I am pretty free otherwise! Where is a mid point for us to meet? I am in Camp Hill.

  5. I don't buy a lot of stuff. I tend to register for a lot of races, and we go out to eat a fair amount...and by that I mean 1x/week. I spend a lot on food--a big family, but we eat well too--We don't eat a lot of processed foods because one of my kids has allergies to dyes, tree nuts and chocolate. So I do A LOT of cooking and baking, and we try and eat a lot of organics due to sensitivities, so that costs extra. (Kind of crazy that it costs so much more...).

  6. Oh I love Jelly Belly's! I usually surrender to buying a package of these at the check out when I am at winners or marshall's. Getting new workout gear is super fun! Don those are expensive, I remember when I bought my 2 12 pound dumbbells I was shocked at how much they cost! I'm pretty sure that's why I did not go back for more LOL.

    1. They are very expensive! But at least they will basically last forever, right? Maybe we should time our dumbbell needs better to coincide with Christmas and birthdays. :)

  7. I would say that more recently, I have been less inclined to buy “stuff.” Like you, I prefer taking vacations and spending my money on experiences. That being said, the “stuff” I like to buy includes fitness equipment (my road bike, tri bike, mountain bike, etc.), work out clothing and gear, and the occasional fun outfit.

P.S. Jelly Belly's are my favorite. They helped get me through grad school!

    1. Yum! And they factory is right out there on the West Coast!

I think when we buy fitness equipment and other workout gear, it could be argued that while it is STUFF, it is stuff we need to stay healthy and actually have wonderful outdoor and race experiences. :)

  8. I want new free weights soooo badly but can't bring myself to pay for them!

  9. I understand that side of it too! I definitely take more rest time between sets when I am at home- especially during the summer where I can do a lift, read up a room quickly, do a lift, feed the cats... etc. It's like lift, housework, lift, housework.

  10. I always have to remind myself that exercise stuff is an investment. Like running shoes. I can't half ass it. I have three kettle bells (35, 25, and 15), a bar bell that goes up to 110 lbs, dumbbells that go up to 15 lbs, and a weight bench. I really need to get some heavier dumbbells, but it is really hard to suck it up and invest. Especially when I like to spend my money on experiences also.
