Las Vegas

Okay, confession.... I DID NOT LIKE VEGAS!!!!!

Here is what Vegas consists of:

1. Crowds
(OMG, The Strip was just people, people, people!)

2. Secondhand smoke.
I really freaking hate the smell. It just STICKS with me. I was trying to fall asleep and I could still feel the smoke in my throat!

3. Overpriced shit.
1 ice cream bar + 1 green tea at a hotel shop = $8.55!!!!

4. Weather that is hot as balls.
110 the day we were there.

You are probably thinking, "Of course Megan, what did you EXPECT Vegas to be like in June!?" But I know several people who go to Vegas and love Vegas, so I thought it would at least be tolerable. Nah.

Also, everything takes forever. Just to check in, we waited about 45 minutes. Why do they only have 4 people working at the hotel check in when there are over 100 people in line???

I was so relieved once we finally got to our room...

We stayed at The Flamingo, which was right on The Strip. Once we checked in and settled down, we got spruced up to walk around.

I felt pretty hip until I noticed I had to rings around my legs thanks to my compression socks I wore all day.

First we walked around the hotel...

Palm trees!!!! Something this PA girl NEVER sees!

Look, you weren't allowed to feed the wildlife at the Grand Canyon, either!

Then we checked out the shops on LINQ and looked at the High Roller. There was no way we were riding that!

Then we walked The Strip... ugh! That's when things started going downhill! (See list above.)

We got REALLY hangry, so we went in the MGM Grand looking for the "perfect" spot to eat. Obviously, that is hard to do!

Just being silly...

We ended up somewhere sort of expensive but it was delicious. It was one of Wolfgang Puck's places. The service was incredible. It was a nice change to have a server who didn't make you feel like you were bothering him. Paul's temporary filling came out in Santa Fe, so he couldn't eat anything hard. Luckily, this place had DELICIOUS pasta he could eat!

We checked out the fountains at The Bellagio on the way back to our hotel. It was really cool! Of course, it was difficult to find a spot where someone wasn't blowing secondhand smoke in your face!

Did you know there are naked chicks just standing on the streets in Vegas? Well, they did have on thongs and pasties. Paul said that we should just take our pants off too. (Don't worry, we didn't!)

So that was our day in Vegas! We didn't gamble. They did have Deal or No Deal but I was too tired and just wanted to go to bed! I think I would have thought Vegas was fun 10 years ago, but not now. I guess I missed my window! It would have been fun to see a show, and if I had realized how much we were going to dislike just wandering around, we would have done that.

Ya live, ya learn!

PS. We did hit up the Hoover Dam before Vegas. No tour, just a quick looksie because it was 110 degrees (no joke!)

PPS. Oh, and when we left Vegas and were on our way to San Diego, we stopped at a really cool 50s diner called Peggy Sue's. I ate my weight in eggs, bacon, and FRENCH TOAST!

Have you been to Vegas? What did you think?

  1. I completely understand you not liking Vegas! I have been several times and it's OK. I really go for the shows and the food and the company (it's usually a trip w/ friends). The newer casinos do not smell of smoke as much as the older ones so that does help but I am not much of a gambler so just play a little bit of video poker. There is an amazing outlet mall there so I always score big on Lucky jeans (about the only kind I can wear). All in all, however, if I don't go back, I would be fine w/ that. It has changed a lot in the 12 years we have been going. And by changed I mean gotten worse...

    1. Oh really?? I thought they were trying to make it more "Family" there?

    2. I cannot even imagine bringing children there. My best friend was there over the weekend and said the same thing (mostly about all the nakedness).

  2. I'm with Susan, I go to Vegas for the shows! Cirque doesn't travel down here very often, so going to Vegas is my one chance to see their shows. Their are some cool magic shows as well. We've seen Penn & Teller twice and loved it both times.

I also agree with the newer hotels thing too re: the smell of smoke. The first couple of times we stayed at MGM Grand, Paris and Caesar's. The smoke in those hotels can be tough to handle, but last year we stayed at the Aria and I didn't smell smoke anywhere but on the casino floor and even there it wasn't too bad.

Hope you enjoy your next stop better!!!

  3. The last time I was in vegas was about 6 years ago, and I think if I were to go now I would feel exactly like you about it. I have also never been there in the summer so I'm sure that makes a difference!

    1. Well if you go again, bring your own personal oxygen tank.

  4. We have been to Vegas several times but always in the fall so the weather was never an issue ( I was usually cold). The most recent trip was for the Rock n Roll Las Vegas Marathon. The race was fun but for the rest of vegas I guess I could take it or leave it. When we go to the MGM we always eat at the Rainforest Cafe! And from one PA gal to another, we have just as much fun at Atlantic City and it's much closer....lol. enjoy the rest of your trip!

  5. I agree--I have no reason to want to go to Vegas. I have been, and I did not enjoy it. When you consider all the expense of having the extravagance in the middle of the desert--CRAZY.

    1. I talked to Paul, and while we are glad there is a city like that... a city where one can walk around in pasties if one chooses, we are glad that we DON'T have to go there hehe.

  6. I stayed at the MGM Grand when I was there a couple months ago. I know the restaurant you are talking about and have eaten there on a past trip and it's amazing! Then I did that same drive and remember seeing Peggy Sue's diner (this was last weekend) but I never stopped there. Did you notice how there are some crazy freaking drivers on the 15 freeway? Welcome back to cooler Cali!

    1. I can't believe we got out of Cali alive hahaha! I was the old grandma in the jeep cherokee going 5 below the speed limit and using my turn signal hehe.

Peggy Sue's.... food was mediocre. Fun place to stop but food was okay, coffee SUCKED.

I am glad you know the Wolfgang Puck place I went to! It was real good food and great service. Paul had basically been drinking those green Naked smoothies due to his tooth and he needed some GOOD food in him.

  7. Yup! And at least we got a small taste of it and know it's not for us.

  8. I haven’t been to Vegas in years. The last time I went was with a group of friends and we hung out at the pool all day and walked around at night. In my younger years Vegas was fun for the party scene, but I could only handle a couple nights. Now if I were to go to Vegas, I would probably spend a lot of time at the pool and go to a couple shows. But you are right, everything is really expensive… If I’m going to go on vacation, might as well as go somewhere I haven’t been. It’s good that you at least got to experience it and see what the strip is all about!

    1. Yup, glad I got to experience it. If I go again, it will be for a show only.

  9. I went to Vegas twice, most recently as a college senior on spring break. I'm like you - it was too crowded, pricey, and smelly for me. I'm not a fan at ALL. I've stayed in the a Flamingo, too!

  10. Sorry I love Vegas. Walking the strip with a nice cold beer is my favorite. Plus many of the shows are amazing. But yes there are tons of people, I agree.

    1. Ooh yeah I was surprised you could just walk around with alcohol! I would love to see the shows, I know they are so good.
