Time to fess up!

I looooooooooooved drinking diet sodas, diet teas, diet juices, diet ANYTHING. If it had zero calories and a shit ton of chemicals, I was all for it!

A couple summers ago, I gave up fake sugary drinks cold turkey. It was really hard at first, but it got easier. I even got to the point where I could have one on a special occasion and not get addicted again.

Sure, I have fallen off the wagon. Particularly when the diet stuff finds it's way into our house. I don't buy it, but once in awhile, my husband does! And when I see it in the fridge... I am not strong enough. I drink it... a lot of it.

On Friday night, Paul bought a 12 pack of Diet Twist Up at Wal-Mart. I'm writing this post on Sunday night and all 12 are GONE! I drank 6 of them. At least!

The wreckage.

What can I learn from this? Well, I already knew I don't do well when it's in the house! I just have to pick up and try again. I'm going to the grocery store to get some seltzer water tomorrow. The carbonation really helps satisfy my craving and sometimes I put some cranberry juice in it if I want some sugar.

What's your Kryptonite that you can't keep in the house?

  1. That is me--totally. I used to drink tons of diet Mtn. Dew. Gave that up and switched to Coke Zero. Then gave that up cold turkey for almost a year and then got to the point where I would just have about 1/week. Now, I have fallen off the wagon a bit. I traveled a good portion this month and those back to back trips were super fun but by the time I was in AZ, I was a bit tired. I have been having some type of diet soda just about every day. I am just like you: really wanting to get back on the wagon. If I could get back to 1/week (max) that would be great. Let's do it together!!

    1. Count me in! I stocked up on lime seltzer water yesterday so I think I am good to go! But if Paul buys it again... I really just have to make sure the seltzer is in the house. I love cracking the can open and drinking a cold, carbonated beverage.

I'm with you on vaycay though- to me that is a special occasion and if I want diet, I will have diet! Though it is hard to get back to normal once you're home!

  2. When you drink soda now does it make you burp like crazy? I gave up diet soda a few years ago, and now when I have it on rare occasion I burp embarrassingly loud!

    1. OMG YES! I make Paul laugh so hard with how loud/often I can burp with that stuff!!!!!

  3. Oh no!! I was hoping you'd be strong and fight it!!

I'm having great luck with LaCroix. I used to hate it, but a friend suggested I give it another try and now it's working like a charm. It satisfies the carbonation cravings, and the only ingredients are water and natural flavor. It's very refreshing!

    1. Awesome that you found something that helps your craving! That's me and seltzer water. In fact, I have a lime seltzer on my desk right now!

  4. Giving up diet/zero-calories drinks is really difficult to do because it is everywhere! I think you should cut yourself some slack, as we all have a splurge weekend every once in a while. My kryptonite is sugar and sweets. If it's in the house, I will eat it. Right now we have a bunch of Girl Scout cookies in our house and I am doing everything in my power to resist eating them all in one day.

What do you drink in place of diet soda? For some reason sparkling water tastes funky to me and I can't drink it. I'm always looking for healthy alternative options - water can get pretty boring (even though I drink a lot of it).

    1. I drink a lot of just plain water instead. Or seltzer water. I like lime or lemon lime. If I am craving sugar, I dilute cranberry juice or apple juice with water. I am not afraid of a little sugar, I was just drinking waaaaaaaaaaay to much of the FAKE sugar. :)

Yum, GS cookies! I understand, it is hard to just eat 2 or 3!

  5. Oh yes, me too! I LOVE diet 7-Up and rarely have it in the house anymore, but when I do, it doesn't last long. I have been drinking Pellegrino, the big glass bottles of sparkling natural mineral water from Costco at night. I love them, but they are expensive! However, I justify it by thinking about all those chemicals I am not putting in my body by drinking it instead ;) I also cannot control myself with ice cream-love it more than anything. I try not to buy it, but always give in. I just need my ice cream ;( Chocolate covered almonds are also challenging. This one is going to sound odd, but bananas! Some days all I want to eat is bananas, and could probably go through 6 huge ones if I let myself! More bananas than is necessary....

    1. lol that is more bananas than necessary buuuuuut I guess not the most horrible thing to binge on??? I love ice cream as well. I don't even try to not eat it. I just try to eat a "normal" amount. Chocolate covered almonds are good too. :) We don't really ever have them here because they are more expensive than just getting cookies or something. :) I think you should keep buying your fancy waters because you are right- it is worth it!

  6. I used to be a huge Diet Coke drinker (it was my breakfast, mid-morning snack, lunch.....) and I never drank water then. One day I decided that was crazy so I cut down to 1 a day and did that for years. Now I will go weeks in between having a Diet Coke. My weakness is potato chips!!!

    1. That is awesome you cut it down by so much! I remember you love chips. :)

  7. I'm glad I got out of my diet coke habit. Although I'd only have one a day, I just know that stuff is not good for you. I can't keep chocolate, peanut butter, or any kind of cracker/chip in the house. Cheese is a close second.

    1. Mmm cheese. That is funny because we ALWAYS have cheese in the house. But that is something I can just eat a normal amount of and let it be. Isn't it interesting how we all have different "things" that we know we can't have around or it will be gone in way too short a time??

    2. Yes, cheese, peanut butter & chips all go off before I can finish them. I actually go weeks without even eating those things. That tub of ice cream and those bunch of bananas won't last a few days though! ;)

  8. Oh cheesecake is delicious! If we had that it would be gone. We have gotten the little single slices before.
