I ran to the gym!

For the first time in my life, I ran to the gym! I have lived 2.5 miles from my gym for the past 6 years. I don't understand why it took me until yesterday to actually run there.

While it is definitely not a scenic route, it is a relatively safe route. It was a great way to break up the run a bit.

Speaking of breaking things up... Since it was a chest/ shoulders/ triceps day, I decided to mesh a little upper body action into my run. After every half mile, I got down and did 10 push ups. It was a sneaky way to pound out 100 of them without getting too tired. I suggest trying it on your next 5 mile run, and I also suggest making sure you don't care what pedestrians or motorists think of you.

At the gym, I did my standard...

Yay, no push ups! Well, I did them during my run...

I'm thankful that in the summer, I have the time to do something a little more random to break up my usual training. It's easy to fall into a rut. Normally I enjoy doing the same 'ol thing. But not yesterday. Yesterday, I needed something a little different!
Have you ever run to the gym?
Are you going to try my run/push up idea?
How do you break up your normal routine?

  1. Oh that's awesome and so innovative of you! lol. I ran to the gym when I used to live a mile and a half from it...hehe. I remember the desk guy giving me strange looks when I'd show up already sweating and breathing heavy...lol.

    1. Yes I felt a little silly being out of breath when I showed up! Actually, you just reminded me of when I used to also be a member of LA Fitness for their pool and I wanted to quit, so I ran to LA Fitness not to work out, but to QUIT. Imagine showing up all sweaty and out of breath, in running clothes, and declaring, "I want to quit the gym!" hahaha

  2. I haven't run to the gym but I've thought about it a few times! My gym is 2 miles away and up a huge hill. The only time I run the hill normally is part of a longer run so it never feels right to stop at the gym. But maybe for a strength workout it would make sense. I like that you're putting workouts up since it's a weak area. I feel like I'm learning from you!

    1. Ooh good! I used to not post my weekly workouts, just random workouts once in awhile, but I realized it interests some people how far I am running and what I am doing... it is a running blog, after all hehe. One thing posting my workouts does is keep me accountable. I preach about rest days, so if I don't take one, I know I better or else I'm just talking the talk and not walking the walk!

  3. That's awesome! My gym was always too far away to run to, and dangerous due to really busy roads and no sidewalks. The apartment I'm moving into this weekend is really close to campus so I'll be able to run to the rec if I want to. I'm so excited!

    1. That will be convenient! :) I remember walking to the gym in college. There was this really long ally that went pretty much from the exit of my dorm right to the parking lot of the gym. Ahhhh memories.

  4. I have actually run to my gym. I live about 5 miles away and the route is not scenic nor is it incredibly safe, so I have only done it once or twice. Plus, I have to arrange a ride back home or else I'm in for a 10 mile run....

My exceptionally fast marathon running friend stops during runs to do push ups and pull ups. They don't do strength training otherwise, but it must be working because they have a ROCKING body.

    1. Dang I wish that would work for me! Unfortunately, the only way I have ever been able to build muscle and get stronger was with a dedicated strength training plan.

  5. Yah, no 6 lane highway! You want to get there alive! 4 miles is kind of far... because then you need to turn around and go home! hehe. I bet your run buddy would do the push ups she sounds cool!

  6. I love this workout! Yay for changing things up, Meg. I only really run around here but have thought that sometime I need to drive to the rec center, go for a run, then swim! As soon as I am back to running, I will try that.

  7. Great job running to the gym. Our gym is less than a mile away but I still drive lol. 100 push-ups, what?? No way I'm trying that because I can't do that many lol

    1. I can't do 100 in a row but 10 at a time is okay!

  8. Good for you! I don't belong to a gym anymore but when I did I always thought "why run TO the gym when the point of working out is being AT the gym," so I always drove. Now I just wander down the hall and hop on my treadmill, bike, or pick up the weights. I LOVE working out at home so much more.

    1. Working out at home is awesome. I wish I had all the weights I needed to lift at home!

  9. On the map the gym actually looks further than it is..lol.
I could totally run to the gym and I would love to run to my favorite running trail bit we have one stinkin road that is dangerous. I've ran on it 2 or 3 times, but I hate it.

    1. Augh that stinks, but it's definitely not worth it to run on a risky road!

  10. I would always love to run to the gym but mine is far enough that I'd be too tired to workout and then run home!

  11. Hooray for running to the gym - great way to get both your cardio and strength training at the same time. And, love the idea of doing push-ups during your run - super idea!!

    1. I have a love hate relationship with push ups so this worked well!

  12. I break up some of my short runs with weight sets if I'm running on the treadmill!

A couple days ago I saw a guy drop in the middle of his run and start doing pushups! It sounds like a great idea, but I have a weird thing about touching the ground outside. Don't ask! :D

    1. lol well I definitely did it on grass BUT when I was at the beach last week I did a burpee in the parking lot to show someone and my hands touched the gross street. I was a little drunk on margaritas so I didn't care....

  13. My gym is 1.25 miles away, so I always either run or bike there (except in the winter, when it's dark all the time). I like the push-ups added into your workout!

  14. That's so close! A nice little warm up/cool down whether running or biking. :)

  15. I love breaking up my routine! I have totally gotten over the idea of other people looking at me while running. One of our hills in town has benches at the top and I use them for box squats and push ups. People driving by probably think I'm loony but I don't care :)
That is some great motivation running to the gym and then working out, and having to run back home! Way to go :)

    1. That is awesome! If I saw someone doing exercises on a bench I would think they were super bad ass.
