What I need and don't need to workout.

Related Posts Plugin for WordPress, Blogger... Happy Weekend!

I hope you all have a fun weekend planned. I am really looking forward to relaxing. This week has been crazy at work. Was there a full moon or something?

Anyway, have you ever checked out Carly over at Snack Therapy? She has such a zest for life and always makes me laugh when I read her posts. Last week she wrote about things she needs when she works out and things she doesn't need. It got me thinking about what my workout essentials are...

Need:

A hair tie combined with a headband does the trick for me.
I would seriously rather shave my head than have it all over my face during a workout.

I know, it is weird. First of all, who even uses an MP3 player anymore?
Also, don't most people listen to music when they workout? I rarely do.

I really need to take care of my body, so a proper pair of shoes is key.
I'm currently looking for shoes for lifting. Any suggestions?

Don't Need:

Now, I don't wear Tweety Bird pajamas to the gym. I definitely wear proper gym clothes...
but if I don't match totally, it's okay with me.

Like I said, I'm a pod cast girl.

I'll run in anything. Except icy conditions and lightening!
(And like, tornadoes and earthquakes and stuff of course!)

Your turn!

What are your workout essentials?
What do you not need for a workout?

  1. It depends on what I'm doing, really. If I'm on a treadmill, I need my TV and I NEED a treadmill that has short sides and no attached TV. I'm picky and I'm short and don't like to feel boxed in. If I'm lifting, I need my little glove things and my music. Loud, ragey bitch music. If I'm running outside, I need my Garmin, a pair of Brooks Pure Connect, and some sort of water (for long runs) in either a hand bottle or a Camelbak.

I don't need fancy sweat wicking clothing. I know it's "best" but I like cotton tops and I have issues with fabric and sleeves, and necklines. I don't need headphones on a run outside. My hair is short, so I really don't NEED anything for that, but sometimes just use a bobby pin to keep the bangs off my face.

    1. I definitely prefer my gloves for lifting! It's much more comfortable and I believe it slows the man hand process!

    2. Haha! Man hand! Yeah. I just can't stand the feeling of the metal and I get distracted if it's digging in. Our gym uses weights that have like a weird pattern on them and that makes me crazy. Of course, I also hate that the weights have this super tiny bar. I need thicker or I squeeze the hell out of it.

  2. I almost prefer to run in bad weather!! As in, cold, stormy, cloudy...bad weather makes running so much better!

Is there a way to preload a podcast so you don't need to use data/internet to listen? Every time I listen to podcasts on the run, it has to be live streaming!

    1. I know that if you have an iphone, you can download them with the podcasts app (which would work on an ipod, too). I think it depends on the device you're using.

    2. I download them via itunes and put them on my MP3 player that way. OR directly off the NPR website and then onto my MP3 player.

  3. I am so with you on all of your needs (although sub in ESPN app for NPR... though I do love NPR, just not when running). The #1 thing has got to be the hair tie. Working out without one is just a nightmare. I was redoing my pony tail a couple of weeks ago mid-run and my hair tie snapped in half... that was the worst end to a run in a while. I now keep a spare in my flip belt! :)

  4. Definitely need music. Definitely do not need to match.... but a super loud outfit does help

  5. Yeah, your running weather rules are completely up my alley! I wouldn't advise running in a tornado or earthquake...lol. ;)

It's funny how i'll wear the most un-matching outfits running and not care at all! I haven't tried pod casts, but hear so much about them. I'll have to give it a shot.

  6. I think it depends on what I'm doing, but I'll pick running for now. I really prefer to have music but I just started experimenting with podcasts which is a nice distraction. I need my hair up out of my face too. A hat helps keep sweat out of my eyes as well. I don't need sunglasses when I run because I look funny with sunglasses AND a hat. :)

    1. Oh I totally forgot about sunglasses. If it were summer, I would have thought about them and put them on the list as a "need".

  7. My needs depend on if I'm running inside vs outside. Inside: I need either music or the tv to get me through running on the treadmill. Moisture wicking clothes in layers is a given. By the time I'm done, I'm usually stripped down toy sports bra (I only do this at home - I would feel completely self conscious if I were only wearing a sports bra at the gym or outside!
Outside: I need a GPS watch or my phone to help me track my mileage. If it's cold out, I need layers of clothing...again, I'll strip, but not down to my sports bra! I won't listen to music outside because I prefer to be aware of my surroundings.
For both inside and outside, a good pair of running shoes is a given, always need my inhaler, to be wearing a sports bra, and moisture wicking clothes. And water or water with Nuun!

    1. It's an electrolyte tablet that you put in your water to help keep you hydrated.

  8. This is a fun post. :) I definitely don't need clothes that match! I love wearing all of my different bright colored workout clothes and putting them all together! :) My husband laughs at me, but I just say I like all of these colors, so I thought I would put them together. :)

    1. They also come in handy when running outside so drivers can see us!
