Getting Out Of My Head and My Favorite Healthy Foods

Getting Out Of My Head

Normally when I go to the gym to lift, that's all I do that day. No cardio. But on Wednesday, I really wanted to do some sprints on the treadmill afterward, so I did. It felt GREAT.

Fast forward to today. I spent the morning lifting and then felt like I HAD to do sprints again. I kept thinking, "I did sprints the last time, so that means I should start doing them every time." My mind was telling me: "Your training will suffer and you will get fat if I don't do those damn sprints!"

This is how my mind works. Do you think I am crazy now?

I did NOT do those sprints. And I am glad I did not. It is really hard to get out of my own head sometimes.

My Favorite Healthy Foods

Lest you think I spend my evenings drinking wine and housing cartons of ice cream (in my dreams!!!), here is a list of some more nutritious foods that I LOVE. Foods I would crave even if they weren't healthy.

1.     Brussell Sprouts

I don't think I ever had a brussel sprout until this past Thanksgiving when my mother-in-law served them at dinner. I could not believe that all these years I was missing out! It's hard for me to do anything in moderation, so in true “Megan” style, once I discovered them, I immediately started eating these awesome veggies 16 oz at a time. That's right, a whole freakin' bag! Unfortunately, my stomach couldn't handle it, and being a teacher, well, I just didn't have time to be in and out of the bathroom all day. So I don't eat a whole bag anymore but I still enjoy them in moderation!

2.     Fat Free Cottage Cheese

Oh, the mixing possibilities are endless!! Use it as a dip for crackers. Mix in any kind of fruit. (Strawberries are my favorite!) Top a salad with it. This food is an excellent source of protein. I use this as a snack almost every day, which draws some strange looks from the kids at school. ("What iiiiiiiis thaaaaat?") The only problem is it’s full of sodium… which probably explains why I love it so much!

3.     Sweet Potatoes

I just started incorporating sweet potatoes back into my diet. All I do is slice up a bunch into small wedges and bake them in the oven. Even though I try not to go heavy on the carbs these days, sweet potatoes  are a healthy starch option I’m not afraid to indulge in!

Nutrition Facts: 1 medium = 108 calories
0g fat, 24g carbs, 2g protein

      4. Almonds

I’d prefer to eat straight up trail mix, but lately we have just been getting bags of roasted salted almonds. The problem with nuts for me is that to feel full, I have to eat A LOT of them. And while almonds have a lot of health benefits, they’re very caloric. I just end up counting them out like a crazy person so I can be mindful of how much I am eating.

Nutrition Facts: 1 oz (about 22 almonds) = 167 calories
15g fat, 5g carbs, 6g protein

5.     Meg Sandwich

What? You never heard of a Meg Sandwich? Well let me educate you. A Meg Sandwich is made with whole wheat bread, fat free deli turkey breast, egg whites, and cheese. If there is already a name for this sandwich, I apologize, but in my household it’s known as a “Meg”.

Why is a Meg Sandwich good for you? Well it’s packed with protein! The best thing about a Meg is it is so full of flavor, I would swear you're eating junk food!

The nutrition info below is based off of 1 sandwich thin, 2 egg whites, 1oz turkey, and 1/8 cup shredded cheddar cheese. Obviously you could make it with more or less of any of these ingredients- it’s still a “Meg”. Adding bacon? Yup, still a Meg!

I'll take a pic of one the next time I make it!

Nutrition Facts: 1 sandwich = 229 calories
8g fat, 24g carbs, 20g protein

PS. I am not a nutritionist but I did research the nutrition facts I posted.
