Things I Wish I Knew When I Started Running

Related Posts Plugin for WordPress, Blogger...This post is inspired by Heather @ Run Like A G! She recently wrote about things she wish she knew when she first started running. You can read her thoughts here. Be sure to check out the rest of her blog as well. She is very open and honest on it!

Like most runners, I have learned a lot over my years and years of pounding the asphalt and the trails. These tough lessons make us better runners! But if I could travel back in time and talk to my newbie running self, this is what I would tell her…

More miles does not always mean better running.

 Don't over train.

START STRENGTH TRAINING!

Buy a hydration pack right now. Don't wait, you will love it!

Stretch.

Don’t drive all the way to Lancaster for Active Release Technique. OIivetti Chiropractic on the Carlisle Pike is awesome!

Do not sign up for the following races because you won’t be able to run them due to injury and you will not get your money back: Virginia Beach Marathon, Hyner View Challenge, Lehigh Valley Half Marathon.
What do you wish you could tell your newbie running self?

  1. Here's the "things I wish I knew" post I wrote earlier this year. http://www.abkruns.com/2013/04/i-wish-i-knew-then.html

The top one for me is that not every run is going to be perfect, and not every run will suck. Sometimes you have a great or off day, and you just have to keeping trucking!

    1. Your list is awesome! I should have added the shoe thing to mine.

  2. I would just go back and tell myself that consistency is the key. I would say "stop starting and then allowing yourself two years before your next run! It will never work out with that kind of schedule!"

    1. Good one. And now you hate skipping a day, let alone 2 years :)

  3. Those are great words of wisdom! We should all remember that.

  4. That running is an expensive sport! Also that happiness comes from completely exhausting myself :)

    1. Oh my word you are so right. All the money I spent on PT and ART and doctors... I spend more on that than races and gear!

  5. Back when I was running in high school (before technical shirts became big): stop wearing those sweaty, soggy cotton t-shirts, and use a cotton/poly mix shirt! I could have been a millionaire!
