Summer Weekly Workout #4

Happy Sunday! Here is what I was up to with my workouts this week. Oh, I experienced DOMS after all my strength workouts! My butt is a little ouchy right now thanks to the kettlebell swings. They get me every time!

Saturday-  Full body strength! I was feeling sort of soft from not lifting in Colorado. Had a dumbbell chest press PR- 10 reps @ 30lbs!

Sunday- First run back at sea level. An ego boosting 5 miler.

Monday- Horrible 5 miler @ 8:40 pace... with a scratched cornea. (I didn't know it was scratched until I went to the doctor later.) I could barely see and my eye watered the whole time.

Tuesday- 5 miles, 8:20-ish pace (Garmin died.) I felt so tired and crappy. My eye was really itchy and watery. But it was my birthday and I wanted to try to do something normal. This was one of the stupidest runs I ever did because It was SO. HOT. OUT. Like, dangerous hot. I should not have run 5 miles I should have stopped at 3.

Wednesday-  Upper Body/Speed work

Thursday-

Friday-  5 miles naked run... naked as in, no Garmin.

Pros- I am back to doing split body parts and I am excited about that! I really enjoy lifting and prefer doing 3-4 sessions per week. Also, I did purposeful speed work for the first time since JANUARY. Woohoo!

Cons- Obviously running with the corneal abrasion and the sweltering heat was not fun. I know better. Also, I did not take a rest day. Looks like I will be taking one in the next day or two!
What's the weirdest ailment you ran through?
How many times do you prefer to lift a week?
When was the last time you did speed work?

  1. I had a stress fracture one time and I was given this really tiny boot/brace which totally made it feel better. The dr. said I didn't have any restrictions but since I was not actually training for anything "maybe don't run". Did I listen? Hell no. 6 miles later when I took it off I had a blood blister on top of my foot that was about 3 inches long -- I could feel the blood sloshing around inside it. All I could think is "you're an idiot". Because then I was back to no running while I dealt with an open wound. Lovely.

I am so glad you are back and feeling good from your eye injury. Really scary, Meg.

I lift 2-3 x per week. On alternate days I do an abs DVD workout. I can't believe how bad I used to slack off on lifting (either barely do it or not do it at all). Now I almost would rather lift than cardio if pressed for time because I love the results (however I still choose cardio so I can get a "high" which I still never get from lifting).

    Happy Sunday!

    1. Susan, I am laughing at you blood blister story. Not because of the blood blister, but because your doctor CLEARLY didn't know how runners think. You know those doctors... lol! They clearly underestimate us! We could go in with a broken leg and still ask, "Yeah but can I run on it??" hahaha!

Eye is totally normal. I cannot believe how quickly the eye can heal itself!

Girl, I was the same way, I never ever lifted. What was I thinking? I actually gotta hit the gym now. I took my rest day yesterday (although I ran errands all day then we had a leak in our basement so their was water gushing out of a pipe so it wasn't very restful hahaha) so today I must get in a full body workout before we head to the BEACH!

    2. Yes, it's so true! Any little hint of "OK" and we are off. Honestly, it's one of the dumbest things I have done but I got what I deserved. Sheesh.

I am really thankful I have come so far since then. Still have moments but really trying.

I love hearing about your strength workouts! Since I got way more serious about it this year, I am amazed at the changes in my body. It took me awhile but FINALLY I see how important not only for how you look but how it helps support the body with other sports (and hopefully avoid injury).

ENJOY the beach!! Beach/water/sun = my happy place. But as you know, we don't have much of that in Colorado so I settle with the pool.

    3. What do you usually do at the gym when you lift? I am curious!

  2. I can't think of the weirdest thing I've ran through....???? I have to get back to you on that one. I don't know how you ran with your eye in that shape! When I'm running in the trail and a bug gets in my eye, I feel like it's game over...trying to fish it out without stopping is also stupid I know, but for some reason I do it.

I've recently been back at the gym and I do enjoy it. Sometimes I'm not quite sure what to work on, so I just end up doing a lot of chest/arms and back stuff. You should do a little mini workout for me! :)

  3. That must have driven you crazy! I once went through a phase of ocular migraines, so I would see lightning bolt flashes in front of my eyes. No pain, but was scary and annoying. I don't do speed work really. I run intervals, but only to build fast twitch muscles for volleyball. Other than that I've never paid much attention to how fast or slow I go.

    1. The lightening bolt thing sound frrrrreaky! Intervals = speed work in my book! I say, any time you are running fast on purpose, that is speed work, no matter what form it takes!

  4. I am loving those workouts. I am going to add some of them to my plan for next week!

  5. I enjoy your different workouts. I may incorporate them in this week. I'm leaving for SF on Friday, so I need to front load my workouts. I'm not sure how much lifting I will be able to do Friday and Saturday. I know what it's like to feel "soft" after not lifting for a few days. It's not a good thing, as I know I definitely won't get soft from two days of not lifting. In fact, it probably helps my muscles!

    1. I loooooooooooooooooove SF! (Come on, you knew I'd say that!) I always wait 2 days between muscle groups, but in CO I waited ummmmm 6 days???? Haha my body was probably happy for it, though! But the full body smack down I sure needed when I got back!

    1. I can't believe you made it 3 miles! It has been so hot in PA as well. I am just not into the heat this year. You'd think I would be with the winter we just had!

  7. I've run many times when I knew it was a bad idea - I ran on a hip stress fracture for 2 months (partly because the DR thought it was a form of bone cancer and that running wasn't making it worse - I definitely needed the stress relief and I could handle the pain!!!).

    1. Wow.... yeah I think if I thought I had cancer I would need to run a million stress relieving miles! Glad it was "just" stress fracture,

  8. I don't know about weirdest, but the stupidest ailment I ever ran through was a giant blister on the bottom of my foot. Like one of those big, bubbly ones (so gross). I didn't know how big it was until I got home and took my sock off and was both impressed and disgusted. I hobbled around for a couple of days after!

    1. lol @ being impressed/disgusted. You are hardcore!!!!

  9. When I do chest press it is with two dumb bells laying down.. Bench is with a straight bar. Dumb bell chest press is good because you are also working your stabilizer muscles. When you have a bar, you don't have to stabilize as much yourself, the bar does it for you. So if you can't dumb bell chest press the same weight you bench, it would make sense because it is harder to do.
